Bullet Holes in MTA Buses: A Cause for Fear in Broad Daylight

The bullet holes in windows, cans and other places of two MTA buses that were traveling in broad daylight are images that cause fear.

Jorge Espinoza works on 125th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, just steps from the shooting that authorities say occurred on Wednesday around three in the afternoon.

“Yes, yes, I am afraid, of course I am, because some stray bullet, as you say, could happen someday, right? In an unindicated place, it could hit you,” said Espinoza.

According to information from the public transport workers union, the two affected buses were covering the M101 route and were transporting passengers at the time of the events.

At that time, children leaving their schools also walk the streets, and even though there are two police stations a few steps away, criminals don’t care, said an MTA bus driver.

“And in broad daylight no one is afraid of the police here anymore. Everyone does what they want, you go out and you never know what can happen, you can only take care of yourself and try to avoid it, but when things happen you don’t has control,” said Eusebio Santiago.

Santiago.

One of the vehicles was hit by a bullet that broke a rear door light. In the other car, one of the bullets hit a compartment in the rear that contains air conditioners and other equipment.

Incredibly, no one was hurt by a stray bullet, because at three in the afternoon thousands of children leave their schools and the area fills with people.

The shooting caused one person to be taken to a hospital due to shock or fright.

“Well, here is a very conflictive area, yes I have seen, in fact yesterday in that marqueta they were grabbing a person, and they had him handcuffed. Then I do see that they intimidate, scare people and they are young. And of course, for the society is something that one would like to eradicate, right?” Espinoza added.

Investigations continue to find the whereabouts of those responsible and the collaboration of citizens is requested. If you know anything, call 1888 57 PISTA.

Starting this weekend, five city bus lines will be free.

This is part of a six-month pilot program, which begins this Sunday.

The routes are BX18 in the Bronx, B-60 in Brooklyn, M-116 in Manhattan, Q-4 in Queens and S-46/96 in Staten Island.

According to the MTA, these routes serve about 45,000 passengers each week.

Buses on those routes will be marked with digital and physical signs indicating that they are free and will have their OMNY readers covered.

The pilot program was authorized as part of this year’s state budget.

State Senator Mike Gianaris posted a message on social media about the program, praising the efforts of the #FixTheMTA campaign.

“FREE BUSES ARE HERE! Thanks to the success of our #FixTheMTA campaign, 5 New York bus routes will operate fare-free starting Sunday! Riders will be able to ride buses Bx18 A/B, B60, M116, Q4 LCL/LTD and S46/96 without paying for swiping,” the senator wrote.

After six months, the MTA will analyze data on ridership, service, speeds and costs before deciding whether to extend the pilot for an additional six months.

State Assemblyman Zohran Kwame Mandani also posted a message on social media about the program.

“Parts of the #FixTheMTA package were included in this year’s state budget: including 1 fare-free bus line pilot in each county.

“The pilot starts this Sunday: get ready for faster, safer and free buses!” Mandani said.

MTA and NY Power Authority Collaborate on Largest Electric Bus Charging Project in the U.S.

The MTA and the New York Power Authority join forces to create a city bus electrification project

The first phase of the project includes the construction of more than 60 overhead and wired dispensers for New York City public transportation in five locations to prepare for the arrival of 60 new electric buses.

The MTA aims to transition to a zero-emission bus fleet by 2040.

The agency currently has 15 electric buses in operation. Most of the fleet still runs on diesel or hybrids.

This initiative is part of a $54 million project that will bring more than 60 chargers to five locations across the city to accommodate 60 new electric buses expected to arrive early next year.

When all electric buses and chargers are operational, it will be the largest electric bus charging project in the country.

Residents and Activists Demand Removal of Citi Bike Station in East Elmhurst

written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Residents and activists in East Elmhurst are calling on the Department of Transportation and elected officials to remove a Citi bike station at the corner of 97th Street and Malcolm X Place.

Activist Hiram Moserrate indicates:

“They are taking away our parking spaces, the residents of the community are complaining and this is a business that should not exist on residential streets.”

The 18 bike station was installed a few weeks ago. According to neighbors, they have sent letters to the company Lyft, owners of Citi Bike, and the department of transportation to remove the bicycles. Additionally, they have contacted local politicians asking for help.

“The people who live here pay taxes and should have parking on their blocks.”

There are more than 30 bike stations in the Corona and Elmhurst neighborhoods. For the most part, they are located on commercial streets such as Roosevelt and Northern Boulevard. According to them, these bikes are not in demand in residential areas like this.

Some businesses in the area say that the situation affects them quite a bit.

“It is affecting us because there are many customers who do not complain here and I think it would be best if they could move it and it would help us better for the community and for us,” says Gus Rodríguez, Manager of the La Guardia Café Restaurant.

The transportation department sent a statement and we quote:

“We are excited to continue expanding Citi Bike service in Queens to help offer residents a sustainable and efficient way to get around,” he adds.

Meanwhile, from the Transportation Alternatives program in Queens they stated:

“More than half of all homes in Elmhurst, Corona and Jackson Heights are car-free. Converting a small percentage of parking lots into bike docks gives residents new, sustainable ways to get around,” explains Laura Shepard, Alternatives Organizer Queens Transportation

Organizers say they will have more protests and take other steps to resolve this issue.

Efforts to Improve Accessibility in City Subway Stations Showing Success

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 16, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Efforts to make subway stations more accessible are paying off in the city.

Such is the case of the East 149th Street stop of the “6” train in the Bronx, which now has two new elevators.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority indicated that this marks the completion of its fifth accessible station project so far this year.

As part of the work, three staircases were replaced.

There will also be additional renovations, including new lighting, platform edges, ventilation and other repair work.

MTA Chairman Jano Lieber noted during the event that accessibility is a right and one of the MTA’s top priorities, adding that they will not be satisfied until all subway stations are accessible.

There are currently 29 accessible station projects under construction, of which SEVEN will be completed by the end of this year.

New York City Implements First Electric Bike Battery Exchange Program to Enhance Safety and Reduce Fire Risks

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 15, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The city council voted in favor of legislation 949-A, the first electric bike battery exchange program.

This is to control the sale of non-certified lithium-ion batteries and reduce fires caused by their overcharging.

“What we’re trying to do is eliminate batteries from the market that don’t work,” said Manhattan Councilwoman Carmen De La Rosa.

Through the two-year exchange law, users will be able to hand over batteries that do not meet fire prevention standards to an agency designated by Mayor Eric Adams.

They will receive a new certified battery at a reduced or no cost.

Delivery driver Sergio Solano says he agrees with the legislation, however, he says that the authorities must supervise the online sale of these illegal batteries.

“The stores can stop them but the online ones it is also important that they can be followed up,” Solano said.

According to data from the city council, until August of this year there were 154 fires of this type in New York City, in which 14 people died and 93 were injured.

The city Fire Department recommends that you only purchase batteries certified by nationally recognized laboratories. Look for the UL, ETL AND CSA symbols.

“We hope that the UL can also work for everyone, because what we want is to prevent more deaths of innocent people,” Solano added.

Months ago, the council passed a package of bills that go into effect this Saturday. Among them, they prohibit the sale of batteries and non-certified electric bicycles.

“We can all work to ensure that certified batteries reach the hands of these workers,” added De La Rosa.
