New Street Bridge Temporary Closure and Impact on Drivers

written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

New Street Bridge, the bridge that for more than 120 years has connected industrial areas between Maspeth, Queens and East Williamsburg, Brooklyn has temporarily restricted passage to MTA buses and other heavy vehicles as the DOT prepares for a complete closure this weekend to make critical repairs to the structure.

This unexpected closure will affect the routine of the drivers who travel this route.

One of them is José Gualdarrama, who works as a truck driver for a company that distributes non-alcoholic beverages in Maspeth.

“We usually take the bus here to go to Staten Island, now we have to go around to the other side, to the other avenue. It makes traffic harder for us and to guide more traffic as well,” explained Gualdarrama.

“On 11/11 and 11/12 from 6am to 6pm (both days), the #GrandStBridge will be COMPLETELY closed for repairs,” reads a social media message from the Department of Transportation.

With the closure of the bridge, route Q59 will be affected in both directions. Something that also affects José, who lives in the Bronx and who takes this route to get to his work.

“It affects me a lot because I have to leave almost 45 minutes early,” added Gualdarrama.

This week the agency posted a sign indicating a weight limit of 13 tons, after discovering that these heavy vehicles exceed the weight limit of this bridge.

But some MTA trucks and buses bypassed the restrictions.

“Our boss doesn’t care, he says ‘go there’, so it’s the route we know and it’s the closest to entering through the bridge,” said Gualdarrama.

-And it does not scare you?

“No, honestly, I’ve had him for so long and nothing has happened. So ah, I hope nothing is going to happen either, understand.”

The Department of Transportation suggests drivers who drive vehicles weighing more than 13 tons take the Metropolitan Avenue bridge that also connects Queens and Brooklyn.

“But for work I would really lack it, because it would be a time crunch, you understand, because we have to take a detour somewhere else. We cannot take the bridge, we have to go this way very seriously and it is very serious indeed,” said Sahif Tineo.

A DOT spokesperson said most of the buses that normally travel over the bridge do not provide passenger service as they depart from a nearby bus storage facility.

Once repairs are completed, the agency will remove the 13-ton limit, as long as no further work is needed on the bridge.

Mayor Adams Launches “Dusk and Darkness” Campaign to Enhance Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com November 3, 2023

Mayor Adams’ administration kicked off its annual “Dusk and Darkness” public safety campaign.

The purpose of the campaign is to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists during autumn and winter nights, since this is the time of year when traffic deaths increase.

“Today we are here wholeheartedly calling on drivers during this period, when it gets dark earlier, to drive even more carefully,” said Ydanis Rodríguez, Commissioner of Transportation.

This Sunday the clocks will go back with the time change, which marks the end of summer. Something that keeps mothers like Evelin González on alert.

“No, going out when it’s still light, then when it starts to get dark you don’t even go out because, well, you never know, especially on Fridays a lot of people drink, go out, drive very fast on the avenues, a lot of music and it’s like, take precautions, no.”

As part of this campaign, the NYPD expanded traffic enforcement during the afternoon and evening hours.

In addition, speed cameras will be active 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

“Let the drivers understand that if you do not give way to a pedestrian you will be stopped, that if you are driving at high speed you will receive a ticket, we are not telling you not to drive, what we are saying is to drive carefully,” added the commissioner.

This year, the United States recorded the highest number of pedestrians hit since records began in 1984, but this is something that does not apply to New York City.

So far this year we have the lowest numbers of pedestrians who have died in traffic accidents in the last 114 years.

According to official city figures, to date 208 people have lost their lives in traffic accidents, this includes 76 pedestrians. In all of 2022, a total of 212 deaths were reported, including 91 pedestrians.

”There is still a lot to do for both him and us. Of us, I mean those of us who drive, those of us who walk, those of us on bicycles, that is, all of us,” said another neighbor.

On Saturday, DOT workers will take to the streets to hand out pamphlets, reminding drivers to drive very carefully, taking into account speed limits and paying special attention to corners and stop signs.

Q Train Line Expansion to East Harlem: Bringing Convenience and Job Opportunities

Q Train Line Expansion to East Harlem: Bringing Convenience and Job Opportunities

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 25, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

With her hurried pace, María Jacobo doesn’t waste a second to get to work on time, but she says that sometimes the sheets stick to her and she arrives late.

María Jacobo, East Harlem resident says:

“One arrives late because, one wakes up in the morning the more one falls asleep and wants to take shelter and for that very reason, we need the truth in this service, it would be perfect. Would it arrive on time? Would it arrive on time. Aren’t you going to be running anymore? “Not anymore, because the train is going to be here, I ask that I come and get on and let’s go.”

It refers to the Q train service, whose line will expand from 96th Street to 125th Street and Second Avenue in East Harlem.

The good news was announced on Tuesday by Senator Chuck Schumer and Congressman Adriano Espalliat, who indicated that the federal administration will transfer funds to the MTA for the project, in the amount of 3.5 billion dollars, of the almost 8,000 million needed.

“We hope that it will generate 16 thousand jobs, currently City College, the Rangel Institute is training many of the people who are going to get those jobs.”

“We have allocated more than five million dollars to the institute to train the young people who are going to acquire these jobs, and it will mobilize around 300 thousand people daily,” says Espaillat.

Phase two will finally be a reality that will create thousands of jobs and provide service to more than 100,000 people who for years have waited for the expansion of the Q line, which would add service between 106th and 116th streets, the rails will then connect with the 4,5 and 6 train lines at 125th Street and Lexington Avenue.

“More convenient because people will get closer to their work, faster. It is more convenient for businesses too, explains Marcelino García.

The second avenue line was proposed in 1920 and failed construction began in 1970 but the project was abandoned due to a fiscal crisis in the city.

Luis Velesaca would also come more calmly to open the business:

“We hope that it will be done soon for the benefit of us and also of the entire community that lives here, one hundred thousand people! Yes, there are one hundred thousand people and the truth is that I have seen that the Q has been a good transportation for those who have not had access to second avenue, he maintains.

At the moment, the MTA has not announced the start date of the project or the execution period of the works.

A travel advisory that you should keep in mind when you are away from home this Saturday and tomorrow.

Part of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway will be closed for repairs over the weekend.

All Queens-bound lanes are closed from the Atlantic Avenue on-ramp and the Manhattan Bridge off-ramp at Sands Street.

Additionally, only one lane of Staten Island-bound traffic is open along that stretch.

The work ends on Monday at four in the morning.

Crews are replacing old sections of road as part of an ongoing infrastructure project to keep the BQE structurally sound.

The Department of Transportation released a list of alternative routes for affected drivers.
