Hair Loss Treatments Linked to Severe Psychological Side Effects, Raising Concerns for Men
Mount Clemens, MI - A growing number of men experiencing hair loss and seeking treatment are reporting severe psychological side effects, including erectile dysfunction, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and depression, prompting renewed scrutiny of topical finasteride products. The food and Drug Administration recently issued a safety interaction noting that the drug, often prescribed as a topical solution, can be absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream, leading to effects similar to those experienced with oral finasteride.
The concerns come as hair loss remains a prevalent issue among American men. According to the American Hair loss Association, two-thirds will experience noticeable hair loss by age 35, with that number rising to 85% with significantly thinning hair by age 50.
dr. Jeffrey Friedman, a hair restoration surgeon, emphasizes the importance of addressing hair loss early.”It’s great for this to be at top of mind for younger individuals, becuase if they have any family history of hair thinning, or balding, it will be easier to prevent if they start early,” Friedman says. He acknowledges the difficulty in convincing those without noticeable thinning to begin treatment, but notes, “what they don’t realize is, if they come back three years later and look exactly the same, that’s a win.” Friedman also stresses patience, noting hair grows approximately one centimeter per month and “stress can worsen hair loss.”
The psychological toll of hair loss is significant, according to Dr. Jafferany, a psychodermatologist. He recommends limiting social media consumption to mitigate negative feelings.”Set boundaries by unfollowing the accounts or unfriending friends that make you feel less-than,” he says. “Also, avoid checking your hair constantly or comparing old photos or using mirrors all the time.”
The FDA‘s warning highlights the need for patients to be fully informed about potential risks before starting any hair loss treatment. The reported side effects mirror those associated with oral finasteride, including erectile dysfunction, anxiety, suicidal ideation, brain fog, depression, fatigue, insomnia, decreased libido and testicular pain.
