The Washington Capitals team announced on Wednesday that veteran forward Nicklas Bäckström will take an indefinite leave of absence from hockey due to health reasons.

The 35-year-old Swede recorded one assist in the first eight games of the season. In the last one, he only started in January because of the hip joint surgery he underwent before it. He scored seven goals and 14 assists in 39 matches.

“Due to my injury situation, I have decided to take some time off from playing. This is a difficult decision, but one that I feel is right for my health,” declared Bäckström.

“I want to thank my teammates, the organization and the fans for their unwavering support throughout this process. At this time, I request privacy while I decide on my next steps and viable options for non-promotion.”

Bäckström has a valid contract with a cap-hit of 9.2 million US dollars until the end of next season.

The Arizona Coyotes placed forward Alex Galchenyuk on the unconditional waiver list with the goal of terminating his contract.

The move comes just 12 days after signing a one-year, two-way contract worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $225,000 at the minor league level. The club wrote in the announcement that it will not comment further on this move.

PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan reports that the NHL is investigating the matter. ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski claims the Coyotes made the move after learning of an “off-ice matter” they were unaware of at the time of the signing.

Galchenyuk will become an unrestricted free agent after being on the waiver list.

The 29-year-old American played 11 games for the Avalanche last season without earning a point. He played the next 42 games for the Eagles in the AHL. In them he collected 42 points (16+26). In the past, he also played for the Canadiens, Coyotes, Penguins, Wild, Senators and Maple Leafs.

“Breaking Down the 7 Keys to the Maple Leafs’ Playoff Success: Finally Exorcising Their Demons”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com April 30, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The Toronto Maple Leafs have finally overcome their playoff “demons” and secured their first playoff-round win since 2004. This comes after six straight seasons of failing to get out of the first round of the playoffs, despite having a core of talented players like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner. So how did the Leafs topple a tough Lightning team? Let’s break down the seven key factors.

First off, Mitch Marner delivered an impressive first round, logging 11 points in six games and averaging more than two points per game in the playoffs. Auston Matthews also stepped up when it counted, scoring two crucial goals in Game 4 to mount a wild comeback and turning the tide of Game 6 with a crucial goal.

Ryan O’Reilly, who was acquired in a big trade by Kyle Dubas, also proved to be a veteran leader for the Leafs both on and off the ice. He backed up his words with actions, blocking a crucial shot before the buzzer in Game 3 and scoring the game-tying goal with one minute left. He also had seven points in six games and helped to calm things down with smart, responsible plays.

The Leafs also showed a newfound ability to win games late, which had been a struggle for them in past seasons. Sheldon Keefe even commented on this, saying that the team had lost such games in the past but in this series, the team stayed with it and made sure they got the win.

And let’s not forget about the contribution of goalie Ilya Samsonov. Though he struggled early in the series, he maintained a “bend but don’t break” mentality and rebounded in Game 6 with an impressive 31-save effort.

Overall, the Leafs were able to overcome their past playoff woes by playing as a team and stepping up when it counted. With these key factors in mind, it’s no wonder they were able to topple the Lightning and secure a spot in the second round.

Expert Picks for Elimination Games in Stanley Cup Playoffs Opening Round

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com April 29, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

As the Stanley Cup playoffs continue, teams are fighting for their survival. The New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers are battling to overcome adversaries and come out on top. Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs are hoping to avoid another Game 7 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Our experts at The Athletic have provided their picks and analysis to help bettors make informed decisions.

In Game 6, the Toronto Maple Leafs are leading 3-2 against the Lightning, but they must be cautious as they travel to Tampa to finish off their rivals. So far, the Leafs haven’t been the strongest team in every game, and missed opportunities could come back to haunt them. On the other hand, the Lightning’s depth pieces have stepped up, and their players are ready to take advantage of any gaps in the Leafs’ game.

In the Devils vs. Rangers matchup, the Devils have surprised many by going from underdogs to the verge of beating the Blueshirts on their home turf. However, the Rangers have been here before and have a heavier, more experienced style of play. They are the favorites in this game, and they will need to step up to avoid elimination.

The Oilers are leading the Kings 3-2 going into Game 6, but there are some concerns surrounding Connor McDavid’s health. However, the Oilers have a secret weapon in Leon Draisaitl, who has been performing well and could pick up the slack if McDavid is unable to perform at his best. The Kings will need to rebound from a disappointing Game 5 performance and hope that their top line can perform at their best.

All odds for these games are from BetMGM, and our in-depth NHL coverage can be found below the picks. Keep up with the latest Stanley Cup playoff news and expert analysis at The Athletic.

Lightning Silence Playoff Demons in Game 5 Victory Over Leafs

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com April 28, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The Tampa Bay Lightning accomplished their goal of putting pressure on the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs in their Thursday night win. With a record of 0-10 in elimination games in the Auston Matthews/Mitch Marner era, it’s no secret that the Leafs are feeling the weight of their playoff history. However, the Lightning players refuse to focus on that narrative, instead concentrating on their own game and preparing for a tough matchup in Game 6. Despite doubts about their fatigue and ability to keep up with the Leafs, the Lightning proved themselves with a near-perfect road game and an outstanding performance from goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy. As the series continues, it remains to be seen which team will come out on top, but the Lightning are determined not to let this opportunity slip away.
