Thuringia’s Teacher Shortage: Over 650 Hired, But Challenges Remain

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com February 10, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Erfurt (dpa/th) – 653 teachers were hired on a permanent basis in Thuringia in the first half of the 2023/24 school year. At 166, so-called lateral entrants made up a quarter of the new hires. This corresponds to the previous year’s level, the Ministry of Education said upon request. In addition, 262 educators were hired on a temporary and permanent basis.

If you look at the new hires with a view to the individual school types, it quickly becomes clear that there are areas in which those starting out as teachers actually form the majority: 63 of 121 newly hired teachers at mainstream schools were career changers – they were at comprehensive schools even 9 out of 16. The rate of lateral entrants was lowest at 8.6 percent, however, at high schools and colleges. In primary schools the proportion was 12.6 percent.

Education Minister Helmut Holter (Left) rated the number of new hires as a “stage success”. School authorities have made a strong commitment. The teacher recruitment campaign would have paid off, as would other measures to improve hiring conditions. But Holter also admitted: “Hiring originally trained teachers remains a major challenge that we continue to successfully face.”

The teacher shortage has been troubling Thuringia for years. In response to this, the possibility was created, among other things, for people without traditional teacher training to be able to teach as teachers under certain conditions.

A look at Thuringia’s career portal gives you an idea of how many teaching positions are currently unfilled: in mid-February, more than 700 job offers were listed there under the search term “teacher”.

Lufthansa Ground Staff Warning Strike Impact on Flight Operations in North Rhine-Westphalia

Lufthansa Ground Staff Warning Strike Impact on Flight Operations in North Rhine-Westphalia

Düsseldorf (dpa) – After the warning strike by Lufthansa ground staff, Lufthansa flight operations at North Rhine-Westphalia’s major airports have largely returned to normal. After 14 of the 15 Lufthansa departures in Düsseldorf were canceled on Wednesday, only one of these connections was canceled on Thursday – and not due to a strike, as an airport spokesman said.

One of the seven Lufthansa connections at Cologne/Bonn Airport was canceled on Thursday morning as a long-term consequence of the warning strike. No further restrictions were expected there; the day before, five of the seven Lufthansa flights had been canceled there.

According to the Verdi union, more than 50 percent of the Lufthansa ground staff in Düsseldorf had stopped working, including drivers of towing vehicles (pushbacks). The impact of the work stoppage on flight operations as a whole was minimized; a total of 280 take-offs and landings by planes from other airlines were carried out without any problems on Wednesday, Düsseldorf Airport said.

Cologne/Bonn was only indirectly affected, as Lufthansa does not have its own ground staff there – if the plane from Munich did not come because of the strike there, that also had consequences for the location of the cathedral city.

In the collective bargaining dispute, Verdi is demanding 12.5 percent more salary, but at least 500 euros per month for a term of one year. There will also be a group-wide inflation bonus of 3,000 euros. Lufthansa points to past wage increases and has offered 13 percent more money and an inflation bonus for a period of three years. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for Monday.

FSV Mainz 05 and 1. FC Union Berlin Draw 1-1 in Bundesliga Relegation Battle

FSV Mainz 05 and 1. FC Union Berlin have missed a breakthrough in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga. In the catch-up game, both clubs split 1-1 (1-1) on Wednesday evening and are still stuck in the bottom of the table.

Especially for Rheinhessen in second-to-last place, things are becoming increasingly uncomfortable in the relegation zone after the tenth game without a win. They took the lead in front of 26,200 spectators thanks to Jonathan Burkardt’s 1-0 win (45th/+8th minutes). Robin Gosens scored the equalizer (45th/+13th).

The fact that there was such a long injury time in the first half was due to renewed fan protests. Tennis balls were thrown onto the lawn from the block of guest supporters to protest against the investor entry sought by the German Football League. The game had to be stopped for more than ten minutes when the score was 0-0.

When it was possible to play again, it was Union attacker Volland who hit the aluminum for the second time that evening – this time the post. In the long extra time caused by the protests, Mainz’s Burkardt made it 1-0 with a header. But the joy didn’t last long. As if out of nowhere, Gosens equalized with a volley from a beautiful cross.

Amon-Ra St. Brown Shines at NFL Pro Bowl with Impressive Performance for NFC Team – German-American Receiver Scores Touchdown and Catch 10 Passes for 173 Yards

Orlando (dpa) – NFL professional Amon-Ra St. Brown also impressed at the Pro Bowl. The German-American from the Detroit Lions caught ten passes for 173 yards in the American Football League’s all-star event and scored a touchdown for the NFC team.

The 24-year-old’s team won against the AFC team 64:59, with the results of a flag football game being added together with other competitions. The low-contact version of flag football will be Olympic for the first time in 2028 in Los Angeles.

St. Brown was called up by the Philadelphia Eagles to replace the injured AJ Brown. He had already taken part in the show event for the best NFL players of the season last year as a replacement.

St. Brown had previously been annoyed that he was not chosen directly for the event in Orlando, Florida, a week before the Super Bowl, because he has had a strong season. He set career highs with 119 caught passes in the regular season for 1,515 yards and 10 touchdowns. Only two players had more passes caught and yards passed, and only three professionals had more touchdowns. In the playoff semifinals, Detroit and St. Brown narrowly failed against the San Francisco 49ers and thus missed out on a place in the Super Bowl.

Driver faces trial for high-speed police chase and hit-and-run in Frankfurt

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com February 1, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – After a traffic accident, he is said to have sped away from the other person involved in the accident and the police – across Frankfurt and at well over 100 kilometers per hour. Since Thursday, a 49-year-old driver has had to answer for this accusation before the Frankfurt district court. The indictment accuses him of, among other things, prohibited motor vehicle racing, dangerous interference with road traffic and hit-and-run.

On the first day of the trial, the defendant admitted that he drove away in February 2023 after a rear-end collision in downtown Frankfurt. However, he only wanted to drive to a police station to report the accident. He was prevented from doing so by the taxi driver who caused the accident. According to the prosecution, the 49-year-old was racing through the south of the city at times at 160 km/h while fleeing the police.

The defendant appeared in court on Thursday without a defense attorney. The magistrate then adjourned the trial because the complex matter was “a case of necessary defence”. A new trial date was not initially set.

According to reports, the driver kept the police in suspense for more than half an hour. After ignoring several red lights and allegedly endangering pedestrians and other drivers, he was stopped near Mörfelden-Walldorf in the Groß-Gerau district. He explained in court that the taxi driver caused the accident near the Konstablerwache in downtown Frankfurt and was therefore responsible for the chase.

Corporate Bankruptcies in Lower Saxony Economy Soar in 2023: 17.4% Increase and 14,000 Jobs at Risk

Hanover (dpa/lni) – The number of corporate bankruptcies in the Lower Saxony economy has risen significantly. In 2023 there were 202 more applications to open insolvency proceedings than in the previous year. This corresponds to an increase of 17.4 percent, the State Office for Statistics in Lower Saxony (LSN) announced on Monday. 1,366 companies submitted a corresponding application to the local courts. The bankruptcies threatened the jobs of around 14,000 employees.

The increase in the number of employees affected shows that larger companies in particular will run into financial difficulties in 2023, the statistics authority said. Compared to the previous year, almost twice as many jobs (plus 93.7 percent) were threatened by insolvency in 2023.

There was also an increase in consumer bankruptcies. According to the information, around 10,000 private individuals submitted a corresponding application in 2023, which corresponds to an increase of 5.2 percent. The average debt burden per insolvent private person was around 37,000 euros in 2023.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, in the event of insolvency, a debtor is unable to pay off his debts or liabilities to creditors. Companies, freelancers or private individuals are therefore insolvent if they can no longer meet their obligations due to current or impending insolvency or excessive indebtedness.

According to the statisticians, there were around 2,400 more insolvency proceedings in Lower Saxony in 2023. Around 2,100 insolvency applications were filed by formerly self-employed people (minus 1.5 percent), around 230 proceedings were estate or joint estate insolvency proceedings (minus 10.9 percent) and around 50 applications were made by people who worked as partners or similar (minus 2.0 percent).
