Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix are partnering on a sequel to the critically acclaimed animated film “The Mitchells vs. the ‌Machines,” ‌with Jorge Martinez and Ramón Sans set to​ co-direct. The follow-up was ​announced as ⁤the original film continues ⁤to resonate with ⁤audiences‌ and bolster the collaborative relationship between⁣ the two studios.

The sequel builds on a licensing agreement ⁢between Netflix and Sony, initially⁤ forged when‍ Netflix acquired “The⁢ Mitchells vs. the Machines” in 2021 for ⁣reportedly over $100 million after COVID-related delays impacted a planned theatrical release by Sony Pictures. The first film’s success has paved the way for a more extensive partnership, exemplified⁢ by the recent success of Sony’s “KPop Demon Hunters,” which became Netflix’s most-watched movie ever and is already in talks for a sequel.This sequel demonstrates a growing trend ​of ​collaboration between customary animation studios and streaming giants, leveraging each other’s strengths to reach wider audiences.

“The Mitchells vs. the Machines” centers on the Mitchell family – Katie (Abbi Jacobson), Rick (Danny McBride), linda (Maya Rudolph), and Aaron (Mike Rianda) – as they embark on a road trip to film school, only to ‍find​ themselves tasked with ⁣saving the world from a robot uprising⁣ led by the rogue AI, PAL (Olivia Colman). The original ⁣film garnered widespread praise for its unique hand-painted animation style, winning eight Annie Awards⁢ and an Oscar nomination for ⁣best animated feature.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will produce through their company Lord Miller, with Kurt Albrecht producing ⁤for Sony Pictures Animation. Mike Rianda, the original film’s co-writer and director, will serve as⁣ an executive producer alongside Aditya Sood of Lord Miller.

Martinez’s credits include work on Laika’s “Missing link,” “Spider-Man: Across the spider-Verse,” and “KPop Demon Hunters,” having previously served as head ‍of story on “The⁢ Mitchells vs. the Machines.” Sans contributed as an ‌animator to several DreamWorks Animation projects, including “Ruby Gillman: ⁢Teenage Kraken,” “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” and “Trolls World Tour,” before co-directing 2025’s “The Bad Guys 2” with Pierre perifel.
