Photographer Marilyn Minter Challenges Taboos with Intimate Portraits of Older Desire
New York – Photographer Marilyn Minter is sparking conversation and challenging societal norms with her latest project, “Elder Sex,” a collection of explicit images depicting intimacy among older adults. The work, recently published by JBE books, offers a raw and unapologetic look at desire and sexuality in later life, aiming to dismantle shame and normalize aging bodies.
Minter’s project arrives at a moment when conversations around ageism and sexual liberation are gaining momentum. As populations globally age, and customary representations of sexuality remain largely focused on youth, “Elder Sex” fills a critical void. The work seeks to provide a visual reference for intimacy at older ages and empower individuals who feel overlooked or shamed for their desires. It’s a purposeful attempt to reclaim narratives around aging and sexuality, offering a counterpoint to the often-invisible experiences of older adults.
“It gives permission to people who feel shame about their sexual urges,” Minter stated, hoping the work will encourage exploration and “erase the shame.”
The photographs, characterized by minter’s signature style-often employing close-ups and vibrant colour-depict a diverse range of bodies and relationships. The artist intends for “Elder Sex” to serve as a “radical body of work,” prompting viewers to confront their own biases and preconceptions about aging and desire.
“Elder sex” by Marilyn Minter is available now through JBE Books.
