Škoda has to change the name of its key model, the famous singer succeeded in her lawsuit against the car company

A big line over the budget, that’s how people inside the car company evaluate the result of a court case lasting several years. The court sided with the Irish diva at a time when Škoda had already managed to build a name for its model across Europe.

The story formally called Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin Vs. Škoda Auto as has reached its resolution. When saying the above-mentioned words, you might think that today we will be talking about some local Indian trade dispute, but such an assumption could not be further from the truth. It is the civil name of the singer, whom the world knew under the stage name Enya. And you probably already know where the wind is blowing from.

From the beginning, the Irish diva didn’t like the fact that Škoda, without any consultation with her, already in September 2020 stuck the name Enyaq on its latest model – basically her name with the letter Q at the end. The effort to get the car company to cooperate or at least find another kind of business solution to the obviously different views of the two parties on the possible use of the letters E, N, Y and A did not lead to success, so Mrs. Bhraonáin filed a lawsuit against the Czech car company through her lawyers. Target? To stop Škoda from using her name for a car product, saying that it is parasitic on her fame, which she started building decades before any Enyaq came on the market.

Thus started a protracted legal dispute, which people from Škoda have long downplayed. “We found it absurd, Enyaq can barely be heard while Enya screams as if she is being stabbed,” one of the employees of Škoda’s legal department, who did not want to be named because he is not authorized to speak for the company, told us about the matter. Over time, however, the dispute gained seriousness, and the court of first instance ruled in favor of the Irish woman. Less than four years and several stalls later, the final verdict was reached.

The Court of Appeal in Young Gloryhurts concluded that Škoda must have known what it was doing given Ms Bhraonáin’s familiarity. According to him, Škoda Auto a.s. “consciously chose the name of the car parasitizing the name of a famous artist without any sign of willingness to admit the potential contribution of this aspect to the commercial success of the product” and the Czech car company with his decision “forbids further use of the name Enyaq to designate any product and with effect from April 2 2024 to end its use in the company’s promotional materials”. The verdict is final and cannot be appealed. The same applies to the awarded compensation in the amount of 10 million Euros (253 million CZK), which the Škoda company must pay to the singer along with all court costs.

Financially, these are relatively small for Škoda, the problem is the necessary renaming of the car and the change of all presentation materials – here the technical costs will already be higher, not to mention the potential business impacts. Today, Enyaq is an established product and a key model for Škoda, now it will have to call itself something else. “We should have agreed with her at any cost,” says our source. “But Schäfer (head of Škoda – editor’s note) said that she can be happy that we are taking her out of [uměleckého] grave and won’t give her a penny,” he added.

The Czech carmaker must now quickly figure out what to do with the car, starting tomorrow it must not sell it under today’s name. And one way is emerging – Škoda has already been contacted by the Kenyan embassy, saying that they are even willing to pay for it if the automaker switches to the Kenyaq label, unlike the often mentioned Irish company, they would consider it a good promo. Paste K at the beginning, that would work. Now just so they don’t hear from Mattel – Barbie’s “Kenyan” might also be unhappy that he wasn’t thought of…

If it seemed to you on April 2 that Enyaqu’s name had not changed, don’t forget which day preceded that date. We wanted to stay true to tradition, even though this year April 1 falls on another traditional day…

Shame on Kenyaq? You may be looking at it right now, the Enyaq label is popular in Mladá Boleslav. Photo: Škoda Auto

Astronomical Picture of the Day: Comet Pons-Brooks with Andromeda Galaxy Captured by Czech Institute Receives NASA Award

written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Astronomers from the Institute of Physics in Opava received an important award. On Saturday, NASA published their photo of comet 12P/Pons-Brooks with the Andromeda galaxy as the prestigious Astronomical Picture of the Day. You can watch the so-called devil’s comet over the Czech Republic for about a month with small binoculars or even with your eyes.

”On Saturday, March 9, 2024, the American agency NASA published as the prestigious Astronomical Picture of the Day a photograph called ‘Comet Pons-Brooks in Northern Spring’, the author of which is Petr Horálek from the Institute of Physics in Opava, ” announced the institute on Saturday.

Horálek captured the comet with the Andromeda galaxy on March 5 near the Slovak town of Revúca. “The resulting picture was created only thanks to great luck,” remarked Horálek.

The comet that lit up the Czech sky is often called the devil’s comet, because of the so-called horns. “They occur because the comet’s large nucleus has an unusual ‘notch’ on its surface that blocks the flow of cryomagma into space and causes the coma to grow irregularly,” the website explained Live Science.

“Despite the promising forecast, I had to drive over 300 kilometers and then realized that I probably wouldn’t get any images of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks on the evening of March 5, 2024. When I arrived in Telgárt, Slovakia, the sky was hopelessly overcast. I knew that I have roughly two hours to take several shots of the comet. I quickly decided to move south, towards the town of Revúca,” Horálek described the creation of the image.

But there was really thick fog on the road the whole way. When he finally reached Revúca, the sky cleared.

“But I didn’t know this location at all, so I had a hard time looking for a place with a view of the comet. Finally, when I was about to give up and turn back, a field road appeared in front of me on the right. So I drove onto it, opened the door and look , that I have a perfect view. I didn’t waste any more time, set up the montage and started shooting blindly. It wasn’t until I realized in the pictures that the composition was actually very nice, with a distant tree and fog lit by passing cars,” he added.

In the end, this award-winning image was created:

According to astronomers, you can watch the comet in the dark sky outside of big cities with small telescopes. In the coming weeks, the comet will move to the constellation Aries, where it will be visible from March 27 to April 19.

“It will then ‘end’ its visibility in our sky in the light of twilight over the western horizon in the constellation Taurus, in which it will also disappear from our sight,” said Horálek. Its visibility will increase even more, so that experienced observers can find it as a faint spot with the naked eye. Learn more about comet observability in this article.

In photographs, the comet is much more prominent than with the naked eye. They are created in places without light pollution, the lenses are also much more sensitive than the human eye.

“You have to pay attention to how the images published on the Internet were taken. It is said that a full-frame camera, that is, one whose chip is the size of a film frame, together with a 50mm lens, comes closest to the perception of the human eye in terms of perspective and angle the size of the objects. My picture was created with a 70mm lens, which means that the entire scene is about 1.4x zoomed in compared to perception by the human eye,” Horálek pointed out facebook.

NASA’s Astronomical Image of the Day, which became Horálk’s on Saturday, is carefully selected every day by Professor Jerry Bonnel from Michigan Technological University and Professor Robert Nemiroff from the University of Maryland. Their selection is one of the most recognized worldwide.

We will enjoy watching the sky this year. Comet, eclipse and meteor showers await us (1/2024):

Doomsday Approaches: Asteroid Apophis on Collision Course with Earth in 2029

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com March 9, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Asteroid Apophis is among the biggest space threats that astronomers have been watching for several years. A space body with a diameter of 370 meters is rushing straight towards the Earth. According to estimates, Apophis should come dangerously close in 2029. If it collides with another asteroid along the way, it is possible that it will hit the Earth.

Apophis is also among the cosmic bodies that astronomers have been working hard on in recent years. The asteroid, which scientists first noticed in 2004, is approaching the Earth. If the Earth were to hit, the asteroid, which is 370 meters in diameter, would cause a catastrophe.

Apophis was monitored by a team of Canadian astrophysicists, who published their findings on the portal Arxiv. In their work, they focused on the path that the asteroid is supposed to follow in the coming years. And the results are disturbing.

According to calculations, Apophis will fly closest to Earth on April 13, 2029, when it will come within less than 40 thousand kilometers. By comparison, Earth’s only natural satellite, the Moon, orbits the planet at a distance of 384,403 kilometers.

Even so, according to astrophysicists, there is only a small chance that Apophis will hit Earth in five years. “The probability that any body in the Solar System will collide with Apophis is extremely small. The highest probability is that the object will pass close to the planet without any collision,” the paper states.

However, there is still one possibility that Apophis could hit Earth. If the asteroid changes its trajectory by even a fraction of an angle. In such a case, the probability of an asteroid hitting the Earth increases.

And just such an opportunity should occur three years before Apophis approaches the Earth. In 2026, according to calculations, it should fly close to another asteroid, about 1,300 meters large Xantho. Both asteroids will pass at a distance of about 10 thousand kilometers. The tail that Xanthus leaves behind could thus collide with Apophis and affect its trajectory.

Astrophysicists therefore recommend monitoring the asteroid in the following years, so that it is possible to find out in time whether Apophis poses a threat, and in the event of a growing danger, to plan a way to defend against the impact of the asteroid.

Several asteroids are headed for Earth. One of them is 900 meters ago (8/2023):

Czechs Get Once-in-a-Lifetime Chance to Observe Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks in Night Sky Until Mid-April

Czechs can observe comet 12P/Pons-Brooks in the night sky. Seeing them once every 71 years is a unique opportunity. Due to its frequent outbursts, it is possible to see it with the naked eye. The chance will last until mid-April.

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks will brighten up the Czech sky until about mid-April. “It can be observed with small telescopes, such as binoculars. It is known from the history of observations that it often explodes, so it is not excluded that it will become so bright that it could be seen with the naked eye,” informed the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

“The best conditions for observing the comet will be in the next one and a half months,” specified the Physics Institute in Opava. It should be visible above the western horizon, but you will need a map to find it in the sky.

According to the Teplice observatory, it appears in the sky once every 71 years. Its observation is therefore a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “It belongs to the group of so-called Halley-type comets, i.e. bodies with an orbital period between 20 and 200 years,” the observatory described.

”Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks was discovered telescopically on July 12, 1812 by the French astronomer Jean-Louis Pons,” said the Opava Institute. But according to him, it was probably observed by Chinese astronomers already in 1313, or even 245. However, there is no evidence for the oldest observation, scientists only assume it.

We will enjoy watching the sky this year. Comet, eclipse and meteor showers await us (1/2024):

The popular phone manufacturer announced news that did not please many of its supporters. After more than 20 years on the market, it stops making mobile phones. They also had their users in the Czech Republic. Instead, the company decided to refocus on artificial intelligence.

A Chinese electronics manufacturer has come up with bad news for its users. Namely, the technology company Meizu she announced, that it is ending the production of smartphones. Instead, it will focus on developing and manufacturing AI-enabled devices.

The fact that the company has decided to bet everything on artificial intelligence also follows from the new slogan. It reads “All in AI”, in Czech translation “Vše v AI”. According to the Chinese server Gizmochina the company wants to focus on a strategic shift to focus on the “devices of tomorrow”.

It is not the first time that the company has announced major changes. Previously, it was engaged in the production of MP3 players, but with the growth in popularity of smart phones, it began to focus on their production. He is now also focusing on the development of smart glasses.

It already bet on ecology last year. “In 2023, we have successfully transformed Meizu from a smartphone manufacturer to an eco-friendly group,” said Meizu Group CEO Shen Zyiu. Despite the changes, the company has assured its users that it will maintain support for operating systems and services.

They are working on breakthrough technology in Britain. Thanks to it, mobile phones would hardly be charged:

Actress Veronika Žilková Blames Minister of the Interior for Police Intervention in Family Dispute

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com February 19, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Actress Veronika Žilková had a demanding weekend. Her granddaughter Rozárka’s father, Jaromír Soukup, should have called the police at her daughter’s home. He said he didn’t like that his daughter was being watched by a stranger. However, Žilková was not the only one who was enraged by Soukup, she blames the whole case on the Minister of the Interior, Vít Rakušana (STAN). But he strongly objected to her words.

In addition to Jaromír Soukup’s criticism, Veronika Žilková also leaned on Interior Minister Vít Rakušan. She told him that the police broke into her daughter’s house on Saturday night. Everything was supposed to be punctuated by Soukup. “And that’s enough, on Saturday the police of the Czech Republic broke into Agáty’s house to find Róza at home enjoying dinner. The police intervention in front of the house and then my arrival from the theater were photographed by tabloid photographers. All this at the behest of Jaromír Soukup.” Žilková got angry at instagram.

But the actress also pointed the finger at the Minister of the Interior, according to her, the police should deal with more important cases, and not petty disputes in her family. “Mr. Austrian, this is how you task the police? Isn’t the real danger to the citizens more important? Why didn’t the police contact the mother and instead break into the house and scare the child with a professional babysitter?” Žilková attacked the Austrian.

However, he did not like the criticism and strictly objected. “According to some, I am incompetent as Minister of the Interior, according to others, I am capable of everything. What I am certainly not capable of is telling the police what they should or shouldn’t do. The police know what their responsibilities are. The lay public still has distorted ideas about it, as I find out even during my Debates without censorship,” wrote the Minister of Justice on social networks.

He poked a little more at the recently divorced actress and reminded her of her failed marriage with politician Martin Stropnický. “From you, Mrs. Žilková, given that your ex-husband was the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense, I would have expected more insight into the competences of government representatives. In any case, I sincerely wish you all the most peaceful resolution of all family disputes.” concluded the Austrian.

Žilková responded ironically to his sharp answer with a picture from the official website of the police, where it is stated that the Police of the Czech Republic is subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior. “I’m sorry, an exaggerated verb. The minister doesn’t task the police, he’s just superior to the police and they’re subordinate to him,” added the actress sarcastically.
