Bulgarian orthodox Church Celebrates Saintโ Alexander Nevsky, Commemorating โLiberation
SOFIA, Bulgaria – August 30, 2024 – Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan Daniel presided over a โคsolemn Holy โLiturgy at the Patriarchal Cathedral of st.โฃ Alexander Nevski today, marking the โcommemoration of saint Alexander Nevsky and his significance in โฃBulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule.
The annual observance honors both the transferโฃ of the relics of Saint Alexander Nevsky to Saint Petersburg โขin 1724 and the pivotal role the โsaint’s patronage played duringโฃ the Russo-Turkish War, which ultimately ledโ to โคBulgaria’s independence after five centuries of Ottoman domination. The party underscores the deep ancient and spiritual connection between Bulgaria and Russia, and โคthe enduring importance of faith in national identity. The eventโฃ serves โas a reminder of theโค sacrifices made for โfreedom and a call forโ continued unity and spiritual strength within the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the nation.
Participating in the liturgy alongside Patriarch Daniel were Bishopโฃ of Melnik Gerasim, Secretary General of the Holy โคSynod; Bishopโข of Zionium, abbot of the Bach Monastery; andโค Bishop Meletius, Rector of โthe Sofia Theological Seminary “St. John Rilski.”
During his homily,Patriarch Danielโข emphasized the historical context of theโ celebration,stating,”Today we celebrate theโ transferโ of the relics of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevski to Petersburg in 1724. A liberation war,after whichโ Bulgaria resurrects after a five-century slavery.”
