Nevada’s Statehood: Beyond the Silver Myth

by Emma Walker – News Editor October 16, 2025

Nevada Statehood: Separating Civil War ⁣Myths from Past Realities

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Long-held narratives surrounding Nevada’s rapid path to statehood during the Civil War are being re-examined,revealing⁤ a more nuanced story than the popular “Battle⁤ Born” legend suggests. While ⁤Nevada’s⁢ entry into the union in 1864 undeniably aided the Union ⁢cause, the extent of its financial and political impact – and even the motivations behind it – have been subject to enduring myths.

The story of ⁢Nevada’s statehood is often framed as a crucial‍ act of saving the Union, fueled ‍by the wealth⁢ of ‌the Comstock Lode. However, historians are clarifying the complexities of this period, ⁤separating verifiable facts from persistent fictions surrounding the state’s origins and‌ its role in the nation’s defining conflict.Understanding these distinctions is vital as Nevada commemorates its ‍history and its place in‌ the American narrative.

Nevada earned the moniker “Battle born” due to its admission to ‌the Union on October 31, 1864, amidst the Civil War. West Virginia, admitted June 20, 1863, previously held the title. The timing was strategic; President Lincoln and the Republican Party hoped Nevada’s two senators and three ‍congressmen would bolster the Union’s political standing.

A common misconception is that Nevada’s mineral wealth⁤ was desperately needed to finance⁢ the Union war effort.‍ While the revelation of ⁢the Comstock Lode in 1859 significantly influenced Nevada’s push for territorial and eventual state status, historians ⁣agree it didn’t save the Union. The‍ myth of ⁢Nevada’s mines ‌single-handedly ⁤funding the war continues to ⁣be the state’s most prominent legend.

The political reality was more complex.⁤ While ‌Nevada‍ did provide republican support, two‌ of its initial senators, James W. Nye and⁤ William⁢ M. Stewart, arrived in washington, D.C., to late to vote on the 13th Amendment, which⁣ abolished slavery. Congressman Henry G.‍ Worthington did ‌ vote in favor⁣ of the amendment, and Nevada formally ratified it on February 16, 1865, two months before President Lincoln’s⁤ assassination.

Senator Stewart later played a pivotal role in drafting the 15th Amendment, granting Black men⁤ the right to vote. ⁢This contribution underscores Nevada’s evolving commitment ‌to civil rights in the post-Civil ‍War era.

Barcelona‌ adn Real Madrid Eye⁤ Mexican Midfield Prospect Gilberto Mora

Jakarta – ⁤Spanish ⁣football giants Barcelona⁣ and Real Madrid are closely tracking 17-year-old Mexican midfielder ⁣Gilberto Mora, according to reports. ‌Both clubs have received encouraging assessments of the young player’s potential.

Mora recently starred for Mexico in their 2025 Concacaf gold Cup victory, becoming the youngest player ⁣to debut for the national ⁣team -‍ known as El Tri -⁢ and featuring as a starter ‌in the ‌final. ⁤He further showcased his talent at the 2025 U-20 World Cup, scoring ⁤three goals and providing two assists despite Mexico’s quarter-final loss to Argentina ⁣(0-2).

A source within Barcelona confirmed the club’s interest, stating, “We received very⁢ interesting reports about him. He’s just been in the media spotlight, and everyone is talking about him. He’s a very skilled midfielder, a player with very good prospects, although it’s too early to say what his ultimate goal is.”

Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, reportedly dispatched his confidant, Joao Amaral, to Chile to observe Mora‍ and other promising players during the U-20 World Cup. Real madrid is also evaluating Mora, ⁤viewing him as a standout talent ⁢from the 2008 birth year generation and a potential creative force following the anticipated departures of veterans Toni kroos and Luka Modric.

Though, due to Mora’s current age, both clubs will need to wait until he turns 18 before they can legally pursue a transfer. Real Madrid also sees potential in developing the ⁣Mexican market.

Title: Zelensky Asks Macron for More Missile Defense Aid

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor October 12, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Kyiv ⁤ -⁣ Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to French President ⁢Emmanuel Macron for increased missile assistance‍ as Russia intensifies attacks on Ukraine‘s energy infrastructure.

During a phone call on Sunday,Zelensky emphasized⁤ Ukraine’s urgent need for air and missile defense‌ systems, stating,”I told him‌ about our priority needs, first and foremost air‌ and missile defense systems.” The request comes as Russia escalates its bombardment of Ukrainian power grids, leaving hundreds of thousands facing potential⁢ blackouts ahead‍ of winter. This renewed push for support underscores the critical role France plays as a‌ major military backer of ukraine, even as France navigates‌ its own internal political challenges following recent parliamentary⁢ elections.

The timing of Russia’s offensive coincides with heightened global focus on the Middle East and domestic⁤ political concerns within⁢ various nations, a dynamic Zelensky believes Moscow is exploiting. ‍”Russia is now taking advantage⁣ of this moment – the fact that the Middle⁣ East and domestic issues in every country are getting maximum attention,” he‌ said. Diplomatic initiatives to resolve the three-and-a-half-year-long conflict remain stalled, making continued military aid vital for Ukraine’s defense.

Ohio Bill Would Allow Teachers to Discuss Christianity’s Role in American History

by Emma Walker – News Editor October 7, 2025

Ohio Bill Seeks to Mandate Christian Heritage⁣ Education in Public Schools

COLUMBUS – Ohio lawmakers are considering a bill that would require public school students to learn about the influence ⁤of Christianity on American history and government. Dubbed the “Charlie Kirk American Heritage Act,” the legislation aims to address ⁢what proponents say is a ⁣lack of understanding regarding the role‌ of faith in the nation’s founding.

The bill⁣ comes amid a broader debate about the place of religion in public education. Supporters ⁢argue students are frequently enough presented ⁤with a negative view of religion, while ‌critics raise concerns about potential violations of the separation of church and state.

The legislation specifically calls for instruction on the⁣ historical connections between Christianity and⁢ the development of American law and ⁢governance. This includes examining ‌the religious beliefs of the⁤ signers of ⁤the Declaration of Independence - a⁤ group‍ comprised of both Protestants and Deists – and the influence of principles like the Ten ‌Commandments. though, legal scholar Daniels noted ⁢that American law isn’t solely based ‍on the Ten Commandments, as‍ some prohibitions, like those‍ against coveting or dishonoring parents, lack corresponding legal penalties.

The bill is named in honor ⁢of Charlie Kirk, the Turning Point USA leader who‌ was fatally ‍shot on‌ sept. ⁢10 at ⁢the University of Utah Valley. Kirk was a ⁤vocal advocate for a stronger role of Christian faith in public life, frequently expressing his belief that the American church needed to be “more⁢ bold, courageous or strong.”

According to FBI data, ⁤there were ‌2,783 incidents of religion-based hate crimes reported in 2024, with nearly 70% targeting Jewish individuals. Incidents against Catholics, Protestants, Mormons, and other Christians accounted for 8.6% of the total.

Proponents of the bill, like Click, contend that a ‍lack of education about Christianity’s⁢ historical influence ⁢contributes to anti-religious sentiment and violence. “If‌ they (students) are taught about religion, it’s probably that religion is⁢ the source of all evil…They ⁣receive a one-sided view,” Click said.

The bill’s‌ potential impact on higher education is ⁤also under scrutiny,⁢ as it could conflict with Senate Bill⁤ 1, recently signed ‍into law by‍ Governor DeWine, which prohibits⁣ universities from ⁢advocating for controversial beliefs or policies.

Grand Jury to Investigate Funding of Hope Florida Foundation

TALLAHASSEE, FL – A grand jury has been convened in Tallahassee to investigate financial dealings involving the ‍Hope‌ Florida Foundation, a charity spearheaded by First Lady Casey ⁣DeSantis, according to reports Wednesday. The examination centers on a $10‍ million contribution received by the foundation and its subsequent‍ transfer to a‌ political committee.

The funds ‌originated from a $67‌ million settlement ‍with Centene, a Medicaid vendor, concerning overpayments to the⁢ state. Nearly all of the $10 million donation ‍was then directed to Keep Florida Clean, a political committee formerly led by James Uthmeier, who was then Governor Ron DeSantis’s chief of staff.

Keep Florida Clean spent heavily opposing two proposed constitutional amendments on the 2024 ballot: ⁢one to establish ⁣abortion rights and another to legalize recreational marijuana. Both amendments ultimately failed to pass. Following the election, DeSantis ‌appointed Uthmeier ⁣as Florida’s⁣ Attorney General, replacing Ashley Moody, who is now ‍a U.S. Senator.

The Hope Florida Foundation faced earlier⁢ scrutiny‌ in 2025 from a Florida House committee led by State Rep. Alex ‍Andrade, a Pensacola Republican, regarding the centene‍ payment. The committee investigated the $10 million as part of the larger $67 million‍ settlement. Andrade did not ⁤immediatly respond to a request for comment.

The⁣ Hope Florida foundation serves as the fundraising arm for the broader Hope⁢ Florida ⁢initiative, championed‍ by Casey DeSantis.

Requests for comment are pending with spokespeople for ⁢Governor ⁣DeSantis,Attorney⁢ General Uthmeier, and the Department of Children and‌ Families, which oversees the foundation. The⁣ Florida Democratic Party issued a ⁢fundraising appeal to supporters following news of the grand jury’s convening.

this is a‌ developing news story and might potentially ⁣be updated.

Schweikert to Run for Governor, Leaving Congress Seat Open

by Emma Walker – News Editor September 30, 2025

Arizona Congressman David ⁣Schweikert Enters Race for Governor

PHOENIX – U.S. Rep. David Schweikert announced Monday he will run for Arizona governor in 2026, setting‌ the stage for a competitive Republican primary. The move immediately reshapes the gubernatorial landscape and opens ‍up his Congressional seat, considered a key battleground for control of the U.S. House.

Schweikert, who represents Arizona’s 1st ⁤Congressional District, framed his decision as a chance to focus on impactful conservative policies⁤ and‌ spend more time ‍with his family. He acknowledged the White House had expressed a‍ preference for him to ‌remain in Congress, but ⁤said thay understood ⁣his reasoning. “There’s⁣ no question they would have preferred me staying and running for the House, but they also ‍understand why I’m doing this,” he said. He pledged to support a strong Republican nominee to succeed him in Washington, D.C.

The field for the Republican nomination is already taking shape.Karrin Taylor Robson has signaled her willingness to self-fund, as she did in a previous gubernatorial bid. She,along with Andy Biggs, have both received endorsements ⁤from former President Donald‌ trump – a dual endorsement Schweikert said he respected. However, he intends to emphasize his own conservative record. ⁣”I would make sure to ‘tell ⁤the story of being an actual conservative,'” he stated, adding that ⁤his “conservative credentials ‘are as solid as anyone you⁤ will find, ⁤and focusing on the things that actually make a difference, I believe that works.'”

Schweikert’s departure from ⁤the House race creates an open seat in a district ⁤considered⁣ crucial for maintaining‌ Republican control of the House. Democrats are hoping to capitalize on the possibility during the midterm elections, when the party ⁢out of⁣ the white⁣ house typically gains ground.

beyond the political calculations, Schweikert cited personal reasons for‌ his decision. He and his wife adopted two‍ children, ages 3 and 9, and a ‍gubernatorial role‍ would allow him⁣ to avoid⁤ frequent ‍trips ⁢to Washington, D.C. for votes. “My nine-year-old is just giddy that when daddy flies back from⁣ D.C., we’ll be getting in the truck and going and doing road trips,” he said.
