Vuelta a España Protests: A Turning Point for Cycling

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor September 15, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Vuelta a España ⁣Disrupted by Unprecedented Protests, ⁢Raising Concerns for Future of ⁣Pro Cycling

Madrid, Spain ‍ – The 2024 Vuelta a España concluded Sunday amid widespread‍ and escalating protests, marking an unprecedented disruption in professional cycling history. Unlike isolated incidents targeting races like‌ the Tour de France, the⁤ Vuelta⁢ faced sustained demonstrations throughout its duration, prompting questions‍ about the future security and ⁢viability ⁢of open-road cycling events.

The protests⁢ centered on Israel-Premier Tech’s participation in the race, stemming from the ongoing conflict in Gaza. While the⁢ team is privately owned by Canadian-Israeli billionaire⁣ Sylvan Adams and maintains‌ no official affiliation with the‌ Israeli government, it became the focal point of demonstrations.‍

“La Vuelta⁤ has been a trigger for reflection. cycling is ⁤vulnerable. I hope it⁢ won’t be⁤ like that,” said Vuelta director Javier Guillén on Monday, acknowledging the gravity of the situation.

The UCI, cycling’s governing body, has remained‌ largely⁤ silent, ⁤indicating it will likely defer to broader sporting institutions like the International‌ Olympic Committee, which has not yet issued a condemnation of Israel.

The scale⁢ of the protests differed significantly from previous incidents involving environmental⁢ activists, striking unions, ‍or local⁤ farmers. Riders largely refrained from public comment, citing fears⁣ of social media ⁣backlash or becoming future targets.

Ineos Grenadiers veteran Michal Kwiatkowski was a notable exception, expressing his concerns on *X* ⁣(formerly Twitter). “If the ⁣UCI and⁢ the ⁤responsible⁤ bodies ⁣couldn’t make the right decisions early enough, then long-term it’s very bad ‌for⁣ cycling that the protesters managed to get what they wanted. ⁤You can’t just pretend nothing is happening,” Kwiatkowski wrote. He added, “From now on, it’s⁤ clear for everyone that a cycling race⁤ can be used as an effective stage for protests and next time it ⁤will only ⁤get worse…It’s ⁤a shame for the fans ‌who came ‌here to watch a great event.”

Israel-premier Tech acknowledged only the sporting achievements of its riders, posting congratulations to American Matthew Riccitello for winning the best young rider’s ‌jersey and ⁢finishing fifth overall.

With Israel-Premier⁤ Tech expected to maintain⁢ its worldtour status in 2026 and the Tour de France scheduled ‌to begin in Barcelona next year, organizers and⁢ officials are bracing for the possibility of similar⁤ disruptions in the future. The Vuelta’s experience‍ has sparked⁢ a critical debate about the vulnerability of ‌open-road ‌cycling and the need for ‌proactive ‍measures to address potential protests.

BOLA DEL MUNDO, SPAIN – September 13, 2025 – Jonas Vingegaard⁤ (Visma-Lease a bike) dramatically extended⁤ his lead in the vuelta a España with a commanding solo ‌victory on the punishing Bola del mundo summit finish, 1.2km from the top of the brutally steep concrete road leading to the telecoms station at ⁤2,251 meters.

Vingegaard attacked, passing Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe)⁣ before⁣ a right-hand turn and distancing the group including‌ overall contender João Almeida (UAE Team⁢ Emirates-XRG). He finished 11 seconds ahead of teammate Sepp Kuss, with Hindley third,Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling) fourth, and Almeida fifth.

The win⁣ marked Vingegaard’s third ⁢stage victory of the race ⁣and secured a 10-second bonus, pushing his overall advantage to 1 minute and ‍16 seconds over Almeida with only one sprint stage remaining on Sunday in ⁢Madrid. pidcock solidified his first Grand Tour podium ⁢finish, holding off‌ Hindley for third place overall.

“I wanted to win in bilbao and I wanted to win on Angliru, but Bola del ‌Mundo is also very special one,” Vingegaard said post-race. He described⁤ his winning move, stating, “I was feeling…at⁢ least‌ I felt like that I wasn’t⁣ on my limit.I felt‌ that⁤ I‌ had a good chance of winning the stage. At one point I just decided,’Now I’m going to ‌try.’ And then immediately‍ I got a ‍gap. The last few⁢ hundred meters were incredibly ⁢hard. I almost went into the barrier, a small mistake on⁤ my part.”

Vingegaard also revealed he had been battling illness recently, but felt improved for today’s ‌stage.”I felt better ‌than the previous mountain top finishes. So I’m super⁣ happy with how things ‌went for me today and‍ how the team has done in the last three weeks. The team has been so ⁣amazing. I couldn’t have done it without⁤ them.”

Almeida acknowledged feeling unwell but emphasized his team’s effort. “We had to try, we had nothing to lose,” he ⁢said. “The idea was to do it as fast as we could, make the stage ⁣as hard as⁣ we could. unfortunately, I’ve been sick this week, so the feeling wasn’t the best. But we still tried and I think that’s what matters.‍ I’ve got no regrets.⁢ We did what we could. Congrats to Jonas. He was super strong, and I think it’s not too bad being behind ‌him.”

In‍ a separate advancement,⁢ Matthew Riccitello (Israel-PremierTech) overtook Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe) to claim the white jersey as ⁣best young rider.

Robledo de Chavela, Spain – September 12, 2025 – The battle for the overall lead in ‍La Vuelta 25 will reach a ⁣fever pitch tomorrow, September 13th, ⁤on a grueling 165.6km (102.9 ⁣miles) mountain stage from Robledo de Chavela ⁣to Bola del Mundo. America’s Next GC Star Matthew Riccitello Holds Tough Despite Vuelta a España Protest Chaos

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor September 8, 2025

Riccitello Battles for White⁣ Jersey⁢ at Vuelta Amidst ‍Protest Fallout

Madrid,Spain – American rider Matthew Riccitello remains firmly in contention ⁤for the white ‍jersey at the Vuelta a España,despite a chaotic week marked ‌by protests and challenging stages. The 21-year-old IPT rider is locked in a tight battle with Giulio Pellizzari of Red Bull-bora-Hansgrohe,⁢ with only 32 seconds separating the two as the race enters its final week. Riccitello is also aiming for a top-10 overall finish ‌in the general classification (GC).

Riccitello’s pursuit of the vuelta’s best ⁣young rider honors comes as he enjoys ⁢a breakout⁤ season, including his first professional wins ‍in Europe at the Sibiu Tour in July, where he secured both a stage win and the overall⁤ GC ⁤title. While prioritizing a high GC placing,Riccitello acknowledges the meaning of the white jersey.⁣ “For sure it’s something on my mind,” he said. “The priority is just finishing as high up‍ on GC as possible, but the white jersey is definitely something that I want.”

Pellizzari presents a formidable challenge, having ⁣finished sixth overall at the ⁣Giro d’Italia, ⁢though he lost the white jersey there to Del Toro. Riccitello believes‌ Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe’s focus on Jai Hindley could potentially create an opportunity. “He is a really strong rider, so⁢ it’s not going to be easy,” Riccitello stated. “The white jersey is definitely his goal‌ as⁢ well. He’s smart, and⁤ he will definitely sacrifice to help [Jai] Hindley, but I‍ don’t think he will empty himself entirely. he wants the white jersey too.”

Looking ahead, Riccitello anticipates a competitive final week, with both ⁤he and Pellizzari racing aggressively to achieve their respective goals.⁣ He also expressed confidence in his ‍continued ‌development, stating, “I’m still young and I feel like I have room to improve every year. I ⁤don’t think‌ it’s out of reach,⁤ so I hope‌ to keep getting ⁢better every year. If I can keep getting better every year, hopefully that puts me in a place to be up there⁣ with those guys.”

Riccitello has been linked to a potential ‍move to Decathlon for 2026 but declined to comment on his future team.‌ He will forgo the road world championships‌ in ⁢Rwanda to‍ focus on Italian fall classics at the end of ‌the season, aiming to conclude his third year with IPT on a positive note.”It’s ⁢hard to put a number on it [GC] but it would be nice to finish with the white jersey if I can,” ‌he said. “if I can have a better third week than⁤ the first two weeks, I’ll be really happy.”

Pidcock Defends Third at Vuelta a España Despite AngliruS Brutal Ascent

CABEZÓN DE LA SAL, Spain – Tom Pidcock of Q36.5 team successfully navigated the Vuelta a España’s punishing‌ Angliru summit finish on Friday, limiting ⁤his losses and ⁤maintaining his third-place position in the General classification (GC). Despite⁣ the climb being widely considered too demanding for the Olympic mountain bike ‍champion,‌ Pidcock delivered a⁣ measured ‌performance, finishing seventh on the stage 1:16 behind the winner.Pidcock entered the stage with ⁢a clear objective: to remain competitive in the GC race. He achieved this, losing only approximately one minute and 20 seconds to the stage leaders and remaining at 2:18 behind the race ‍leader. “I think everyone slowed down. I think I only lost a⁤ minute and something like⁢ 20 or so, but I just tried ‍to do my own pace,” Pidcock ⁤explained post-race. “You’re just fighting the whole⁣ way up. ‌You don’t really get in the rhythm.”

The Angliru’s relentless gradient proved challenging for all riders, with Pidcock‌ holding on until João Almeida accelerated with 6km remaining, ⁢followed only ⁢by Jonas⁣ Vingegaard. While he lost contact‌ with ⁤the chasing⁢ group of Pellizzari, Riccitello, and Gall, Pidcock refused to falter, maintaining his power output ⁣and even regaining ground near the summit.”I didn’t loose too much time, but I would have ⁣liked to be at ⁤the front. I got to be realistic. I think‍ I did a pretty good climb,” Pidcock ‌stated. He now faces another challenging climb at La⁣ Farrapona on Saturday, fueled by a growing belief in his podium potential.

This Vuelta marks‍ a important ride for Pidcock following his ‌move from Ineos Grenadiers⁤ to Q36.5. His performance comes after a quieter Giro d’Italia in May, ⁢which team officials attributed to fatigue from a busy spring racing schedule. A subsequent break, including mountain bike ‍competition, appears ⁣to have revitalized ⁤the young British rider.

The ‍GC standings are tightening, with Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe)⁣ now just 42 seconds behind Pidcock in fourth place. Pidcock ⁣acknowledged⁢ the threat posed by Hindley and Gall, but emphasized his strong form throughout the race. “I’ve broken numerous power records this Vuelta. So yeah, of course‍ it tells us something.”

João Almeida Beats Vingegaard in Stunning Vuelta Stage Victory

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor September 5, 2025

joão Almeida wins Stage ⁢13 of Vuelta a España on Angliru, Moves to Second ⁣Overall

Cabezóon de la Sal, Spain – ‍ João⁢ Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) delivered a stunning performance to win Stage 13⁣ of the Vuelta a ⁤España atop the⁣ formidable⁣ Angliru climb, closing the ⁢gap to race leader Jonas Vingegaard to ⁢46 seconds. The 202.7km stage, originating from Cabezóon de la ⁢Sal, featured a challenging route including the ‌Alto ‍de la Mozqueta and⁤ the Aldo del Cordal before culminating in the punishing‌ ascent of the Angliru.

Almeida’s victory marks ⁢a ‌notable⁤ shift in the general classification (GC), as he jumped from eighth to‌ fourth now just‍ three minutes behind Vingegaard. The Portuguese rider’s attack inside the final⁢ 6km‍ proved decisive, distancing Sepp Kuss ‍and⁤ Jai Hindley before ultimately winning‌ a sprint finish against Vingegaard.

An early 24-rider breakaway, containing Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain-Victorious) and points leader Mads Pedersen, established a‍ lead of two‍ and a half minutes within the first 30 kilometers. Nico Vinokurov (XDS Astana) ⁤and Bob Jungels (Ineos ⁢Grenadiers) later emerged as frontrunners from the breakaway, ⁢eventually joined by Jefferson Cepeda (Movistar Team).

The breakaway’s progress was ‍briefly interrupted by a ‍protest with 12.3km remaining, momentarily halting the riders. Almeida’s UAE Team Emirates-XRG team, despite the absence of stage winner juan ayuso, applied significant pressure on the GC contenders during the Angliru⁤ climb, contributing to difficulties for riders including Egan bernal (Ineos grenadiers) and ‌Torstein Træen‌ (Bahrain-Victorious), who ultimately fell back.

Almeida ultimately caught and passed ⁤the last remaining breakaway rider, Jungels, with 5.4km to ‌go,⁣ before launching his‌ winning move.

“I still have a lot of time to ‍make ‍up to Jonas. He is looking strong so I think it is going ⁤to be hard task, but we never give up,” Almeida stated after the stage.
