The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has informed the 27 Dutch people in Gaza and their immediate family members about the possible border opening between Egypt and the Gaza Strip.

“There are reports that injured people and/or foreigners could possibly leave Gaza,” the ministry writes on and assist.”

For security reasons, not all details are made public. It is not known whether the Dutch can actually leave the Gaza Strip.

Egypt announced on Tuesday that the border crossing will open on Wednesday to transport dozens of injured Palestinians. They will receive medical help in Egypt. More than two hundred trucks with humanitarian aid have arrived through that passage in recent days.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reports that it is in close contact with international partners about the border opening.

A Dutch woman died in the Gaza Strip on Saturday evening. Outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs Hanke Bruins Slot announced this on Sunday.

“Very sad to hear that a 33-year-old Dutch woman died in Gaza,” Bruins Slot wrote. X. “My thoughts are with her family and other loved ones at this terrible time.”

“She was one of 22 people on the ground with whom the State Department is in contact for consular support. We continue to work in every possible way to facilitate a safe departure from Gaza.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs NU.nl that it cannot make any statements about the precise cause of death of the woman “because we currently have no confirmed or verifiable information about this.”

Eighteen-year-old Dutchman still in the hands of Hamas

This week it was announced that a Dutchman is being held hostage in Gaza. This concerns eighteen-year-old Ofir Engel, who was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7. He was still seventeen at the time and did not have Dutch nationality. After his kidnapping, Engel urgently obtained a Dutch passport.

It is unclear where exactly Engel is being held and how he is doing. He was able to get a Dutch passport because his grandfather has Dutch nationality. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hopes that English-Dutch nationality will lead to a greater chance of release.

The United States, Israel and Egypt are said to have reached an agreement on a ceasefire in the south of the Gaza Strip. This is what Egyptian sources told the news agency Reuters. The truce should coincide with the reopening of the Rafah border post. But Israel and Hamas deny the report.

The sources say the border crossing will remain open until 4 p.m. (Dutch time). The ceasefire is also expected to last several hours, but it is still unclear exactly when it will end.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office denies that a ceasefire has been agreed. The report that the border post would be reopened for people with a foreign passport is also contradicted.

Hamas also says it cannot confirm reports of a humanitarian truce. The American embassy in Israel says that the situation at the Rafah border post is still unclear.

Rafah, the border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, was closed recently due to the flare-up of violence between Hamas and Israel. NBC News previously reported that the border post would be reopened. The Gaza Strip, the coastal area with approximately two million inhabitants, borders only Israel and Egypt.

Despite the uncertainty, hundreds of people have gathered at the border crossing, news channel Al Jazeera reports. They carry suitcases, among other things, while the Rafah border post is currently closed.
