Riga, Latvia – October 26, 2023 – The Oratorio theater is poised to begin its fifth season with a possibly historic event: the world premiere of American playwright Sean Grenan‘s newest work, “keep/Toss.”
A Playwright’s Personal Connection
Grenan himself has expressed deep emotion regarding the opportunity to debut “Keep/Toss” with Latvian audiences. In direct correspondence, he revealed the play has never before been staged. He shared, “I have to say that I really enjoy being in contact with you. Yesterday I showed your letter to my wife and her tears were in my eyes. So I’ll do something I don’t usually do. I mention your play ‘Keep/Toss’. Premiere!”
The playwright further explained the deeply personal nature of his work. “Any play I choose to produce touches me directly, personally, and I need to ‘prepare’ myself, my life and my own experience in trying not to return to situations that are not mine, but these plays that I choose to stage with my actors affect many couples, families.”
Themes of Life and Renewal
Grenan describes his plays as a “soul’s shower,” acknowledging their often-contrasting themes but ultimately emphasizing a party of life. He believes his work, even when exploring arduous subjects, consistently offers a message of hope and a “happy ending,” if only within the confines of the stage.
