Indonesian Football Passion Reaches‍ Religious Fervor, Says National Team Player⁤ Calvin ‍Verdonk

JAKARTA – Calvin Verdonk, a recent addition to the Indonesian national team, ⁣has described ⁢the ‌country’s passion for football as akin to religion, highlighting the intense ⁢dedication of fans that extends⁢ beyond the stadium. The Dutch-born player’s observations come as Indonesia continues its campaign to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ⁣fueled by recent victories and a growing sense of national pride.

Verdonk, who currently plays for Lille in the French League, shared his experiences witnessing ‍the fervor firsthand. He noted stadiums filling hours before kickoff⁢ and fans congregating outside ⁣the team’s hotel, requiring security measures. This level of devotion, he explained, mirrors the deep faith held by many‍ Indonesians. “Like people who believe in ⁢god, there [Indonesia] also⁢ many people who consider football and religion the same,” Verdonk stated.

The 28-year-old former NEC Nijmegen player also praised‌ the advancements in Indonesian football, attributing the progress to the⁢ arrival of Dutch coaching staff led by Patrick Kluivert. “Football is also growing now with⁤ tactics, especially‌ now with a new coach with Patrick (Kluivert) with staff⁢ from the Netherlands, yes it is very developed and crazy fans there,” he said. ⁤

Persib vs. Persebaya: Haye & Eliano Debut in Super League

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor September 12, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Persib Bandung Set to‍ unleash Haye & Eliano, Aiming for Asian Stage Impact

BANDUNG – ⁤Persib Bandung‍ is poised to significantly revamp its midfield and attack with the anticipated debuts⁣ of Dutch midfielder ‌Meneer Thom Haye and Indonesian international Eliano, signaling a clear ambition to compete not only domestically‌ but also in‌ the upcoming AFC Champions League 2. ‌Coach Bojan‍ Hodak is expected to integrate the new signings strategically, addressing recent midfield struggles⁢ highlighted‍ by losses ⁢to Persijap Jepara and a draw against PSIM Yogyakarta in the Super League.

The arrival of Haye and Eliano represents a tactical shift for Maung Bandung following the departure of Tyronne Del Pino to Malut ⁣United, wich previously disrupted the team’s offensive flow. While William Marcilio was brought in to fill the number 10 role, the ‍supply to him⁤ has been suboptimal. The club ⁣hopes Haye’s playmaking ability and‌ Eliano’s versatility will ⁢unlock attacking potential and ⁢elevate ⁢Persib’s performance‍ on ⁢both fronts.

Hodak is highly likely to pair Haye with Marc Klok in central midfield, ‍envisioning Haye as a ‍field general dictating the tempo while Klok focuses on defensive depth and disrupting opponent’s build-up play.‍ This partnership may necessitate adjustments to the roles of Adam Alis or Luciano⁢ GuaycoChea, who have previously fulfilled similar responsibilities.

Eliano, despite frequently enough featuring as a⁣ right winger, has demonstrated his effectiveness as an attacking midfielder – a role he has successfully occupied with ‌the Indonesian national‍ team. His arrival allows for dynamic interplay with‍ Beckham Putra, with both players‍ capable of⁣ utilizing both flanks and combining‍ effectively on the wings.

The club views ‌the⁤ integration of Haye and Eliano as a crucial‌ step towards establishing Persib Bandung as a⁤ competitive force on the Asian stage, leveraging their quality to make ⁤a significant impact in the AFC ‍Champions League 2.
