New Jersey Devils Advance to Second Round of NHL Playoffs with Ondřej Palát’s Two Assists and Akira Schmid’s Clean Sheet

Forward Ondřej Palát contributed two assists to New Jersey’s 4-0 win over the NY Rangers in the seventh game of the first round of the NHL playoffs. Goalkeeper Akira Schmid covered all 31 shot attempts and kept the second clean sheet in the current playoffs. The Devils advanced to the second round for the first time since 2012.

Michael McLeod put New Jersey in the lead in the middle of the match, who took advantage of Ondřej Palát’s perfect work in a weakened state. While attacking, the Czech forward took the puck away from the pair of Adam Fox and Chris Kreider, skilfully dodged the goalpost and presented the puck to a free McLeod.

He himself did a great job in front of goalkeeper Igor Šestorkin. He avoided it with a backhand loop and opened the scoring with a shot into the open part of the goal.

Palat saved the second recording until the 55th minute. In the defensive zone, he pushed the puck to the onrushing Jack Hughes, who in a three-on-one renumbering charged Erik Haul, and the Finnish forward made it 3-0 with his fourth goal in the playoffs. Even before Haula, Tomáš Tatar established himself and Jasper Bratt closed the scoring with a shot into the abandoned goal.

Palat contributed five points to the Devils’ first promotion in 11 years and is New Jersey’s third most productive player in the playoffs so far.

“Meet Tyler Bertuzzi: Boston Bruins’ New Mr. Playoffs”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com April 26, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

This year, David Krejčí basically had no chance to prove the rule that he plays better in the elimination games than in the regular season. After two games of the series against Florida, he headed for the mound. However, the hockey Bruins are not too sad, because they have found a new Mr. Play off – Tyler Bertuzzi.

Watch a clip of Boston’s game with Columbus in March, in which Bertuzzi scored from the penalty area to tie the game at 1-1 and Pastrňak won the Presidents Cup in overtime | Video: Associated Press

Not everyone knew what Bertuzzi, the nephew of former hockey superstar Todd Bertuzzi, was up to. Although he debuted in the NHL six and a half years ago, he is playing for the Stanley Cup for the first time. In his former Detroit job, his season regularly ended early.

But it was a different story at the Michigan club’s farm in Grand Rapids.

In total, Bertuzzi played 137 duels in the regular season of the AHL and collected 82 points (32+50). However, in 42 playoff games, he scored 39 times (23+16), which is a jump of 0.33 points per game.

He shone the most in 2017, when he also received the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy for the most valuable player of the playoffs while winning the Calder Cup, the farm equivalent of the Stanley Cup. At that time, he was given priority over other leaders Martin Frk and Tomáš Nosk, the current partner from Boston.

“It seems like when it comes to the playoffs, he’s going to play on a whole different level,” he praised Bertuzzi for NHL.com his coach from Grand Rapids, Todd Nelson.

He also added a story from the regular season of the AHL, which he wanted to illustrate what kind of player Bertuzzi is. “He got a stick in the face and left the ice. Then the referee goes to our substitution box to see if Tyler is bleeding. He lowers his head and bites his tongue to make it really bleed. That’s why we got the power play with two minutes left.”

According to Bertuzzi himself, he does not remember the incident, but he does not dispute it. He likes to play on the edge, to provoke. In the current series against Florida, he caught the attention of opponent Nick Cousins stole a hockey stick and tried to destroy it on the switchboard. In addition, he gives away points, blocks shots, and fights in front of the goal.

“He’s one of those guys you really don’t want to play against, but you really like having him on your team,” star teammate Brad Marchand said of the 28-year-old Canadian. “He’s a competitive guy by nature. You see him in fights all the time, in places where it hurts a lot. It’s just frustrating to play against someone like that.”

Equally important is that Bertuzzi is collecting enough points. In the first four games in the NHL playoffs, he scored six times (2+4) and after Taylor Hall, who has one more point, he is the Bruins’ most productive player.

“When we brought him in, we thought he was ready for the playoffs,” Boston coach Jim Montgomery recalled of the Detroit trade shortly before the March transfer deadline.

By the way, after the exchange, Montgomery heard from the already mentioned Nelson, a former colleague from Dallas who guided Bertuzzi on the farm.

“He told me we were going to love him. He’s a smart, hard-working player with sharp elbows. I don’t think he plays with the same intensity in the regular season, but nobody does. It’s impressive to see how he can add intensity. Everything I like about him Todd said, it’s true,” noted the Boston coach.

Thanks to Bertuzzi, the Bruins have a 3-1 lead over Florida and are one win away from advancing to the next round.

The long-haired Canadian’s contribution is extremely important for them, as the team’s superstar David Pastrňák is only on two points (2+0) and the first two centers are suffering from health problems. Captain Patrice Bergeron has not started at all in this year’s playoffs and Krejčí was sidelined after two duels with an unspecified upper body injury.

Bertuzzi is currently playing on the second line with Pastrňák and Pavel Zacha. But more than the lineup, many Bruins fans are dealing with the Canadian’s expiring contract. There are already calls for club general manager Don Sweeney to work his magic on the salary cap and keep the prolific provocateur.

He was one goal short of the Czech record held by Jaromír Jágr. The native of Havířovsk took second place in the battle for the best scorer of the competition behind Edmonton’s leader Connor McDavid, who scored three more goals.

Pastrňák played in all 82 games in the regular season, and with a balance of 61 goals and 52 assists, he finished third in the productivity of the competition. In the history of the NHL, only Jágr collected more points among Czech players, whose maximum was 149 points from the 1995/96 season.

Pastrňák dominated the club’s productivity and led Boston to victory in the regular season, in which the team broke the NHL record for the number of wins (65) and points (135).

In Montreal, the Czech striker assisted the goal to make it 1:1 and in the 51st minute broke the tie at 4:4 when he finished off the interplay at the left post with a shot into the open goal. He was named the first star of the match for his performance.

Boston will face Florida in the first round of the playoffs, which on Thursday missed three passes by Radek Gudas and lost at home to Carolina 4:6.

The Czech defender scored twice the second assist during quick counterattacks. He got the remaining point for a good tackle, during which he disrupted goalkeeper Frederik Andersen’s pass and after his pass from behind the goal, Ryan Lomberg equalized from the middle of the circle to make it 2:2. Gudas also recorded ten hits.

Stanislav Svozil made his NHL debut with an assist in Columbus’ 3-2 overtime win over Pittsburgh.

The 20-year-old back spent almost twenty minutes on the ice during his debut and also got a chance in the power play, in which he was part of the combination for Emil Bemström’s goal in the 57th minute to make it 2:2. The game was decided by Johnny Gaudreau.

David Kämpf assisted with an assist in Toronto’s 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers. David Rittich allowed three goals on 24 shots and did not prevent the defeat of Winnipeg 2-4 on the ice of Colorado.

Karel Vejmelka covered 19 attempts in Arizona’s 4-5 overtime loss to Vancouver. The Czech goalkeeper was beaten three times by Conor Garland, who completed a hat trick in the 62nd minute.
