Russia Voices Concern as U.S. Operations Escalate Near Venezuela
WASHINGTON D.C. – The Kremlin has expressed strong disapproval of recent U.S. military actions near Venezuela, warning against the use of force amid escalating tensions. the statement comes as Washington continues a series of operations targeting alleged drug trafficking originating from Venezuelan waters, raising concerns about a potential deepening of the standoff between the two nations and a further destabilization of the region.
Since September, the U.S. has conducted over a dozen strikes on vessels it claims are linked to drug trafficking operations emanating from venezuela, resulting in at least 61 reported fatalities. While the U.S. has not publicly released supporting evidence for its claims, Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has dismissed the accusations as politically motivated. This escalating situation is unfolding as Venezuela strengthens defense ties with Russia and China, adding another layer of complexity to the geopolitical landscape.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the U.S. actions, stating, “We resolutely condemn the use of excessive military force in carrying out anti-drug tasks.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov echoed this sentiment, adding, “We are watching very closely what is happening in Venezuela. of course,we want everything to remain peaceful and for no new conflicts to arise in the region.”
The concerns from Moscow follow comments from former President Donald Trump, who, during a recent interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes, downplayed the likelihood of a full-scale U.S. military intervention in Venezuela but suggested Maduro’s leadership might potentially be nearing its end. “I doubt it. I don’t think so. But they’ve been treating us very badly,” Trump said.
The situation is further elaborate by Venezuela’s pursuit of closer defense cooperation with Russia, including potential arms deals and military exercises, and also strengthening ties with China. Analysts predict that continued U.S. operations and Venezuela’s deepening alliances with Moscow and Beijing will likely intensify diplomatic tensions and test the balance of power in Latin America.
