written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Bogotá — May 17, 2024 — Colombia is currently grappling with significant health challenges stemming from outbreaks of yellow fever and influenza. The Ministry of Health is closely monitoring a concerning rise in yellow fever cases, particularly in several regions, while simultaneously addressing the ongoing threat of influenza. In an effort to mitigate the spread of these illnesses, the government is actively promoting vaccinations. For a complete understanding of the measures taken, and future developments, stay tuned.

Colombia Grapples with Yellow Fever and Influenza Outbreaks

Yellow Fever Alarms Sound in Colombia

Colombian health officials are on high alert due to a concerning rise in yellow fever cases across several regions. The Ministry of Health reports that between 2024 and the current period in 2025, 85 cases have been confirmed, with 38 fatalities. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and implementing preventive measures, particularly in the most affected areas.

Did You Know?

Yellow fever is a viral disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Vaccination is a highly effective preventive measure.

In 2025 alone, through May 4, 62 new cases were detected, and 25 people have died. tolima has been the hardest-hit department, but cases have also surfaced in Huila, Caldas, meta, Cauca, Nariño, Putumayo, Vaupés, Guaviare, and caquetá. Health teams are working in these areas to identify infected people and provide timely care.

Government Launches Vaccination Campaign

in response to the outbreak, the Colombian government has initiated a nationwide vaccination campaign. To date, more than 542,000 yellow fever vaccines have been administered. this initiative aims to protect communities in high-risk areas and curb the spread of the disease, thereby reducing mortality rates.

Pro Tip:

if you are traveling to an area with a risk of yellow fever, ensure you are vaccinated at least 10 days before your trip to allow the vaccine to become effective.

For more details, San Jorge de Pereira hospital was declared yellow alert by yellow fever outbreak.

Influenza: A Persistent Threat

While addressing the yellow fever outbreak, health officials remain vigilant about other prevalent diseases, particularly influenza. The Ministry of Health reported that in 2024, more than 6.5 million cases of acute respiratory infections (ARI) were reported during external consultations and emergencies.

Influenza, often mistaken for a common cold, is a highly contagious viral infection that can lead to severe complications requiring hospitalization, especially among older adults, pregnant women, children, and individuals with chronic conditions. In 2025, Colombia has recorded over 72,000 hospitalizations and 8,700 intensive care unit (ICU) admissions due to influenza. Experts urge citizens to practice self-care and get vaccinated.

Healthy people can contract flu and, without knowing, infecting those who are more susceptible to complications. So the importance of vaccinating to reduce transmission and strengthen community protection.
Dr. Álvaro Rojas, medical director of Abbott in Latin America

The world Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes that vaccination is the most effective and straightforward method to minimize the risks associated with influenza, both in terms of contagion and symptom severity.

Influenza can impact anyone, regardless of their age, it is indeed even estimated that between 3 and 5 million people in the world develop a serious flu every year. Therefore, vaccination for all population groups is recommended, especially for those who can develop more complications.
Dr. Rojas

HMPV Outbreak: China-Malaysia Sees Surge in Respiratory Illness Cases

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 6, 2025
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Global Respiratory‍ Virus Surge: Malaysia adn China Report⁣ Increases

Concerns are rising globally regarding a critically important increase in respiratory illnesses, notably human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections.Recent reports from both Malaysia and⁣ China highlight a troubling trend, prompting health officials to urge ⁣increased vigilance and preventative measures.

Malaysia Sees Sharp Rise in HMPV Cases

Malaysia experienced a significant 45 percent jump in HMPV cases in 2024, climbing from 225 reported cases in 2023 to 327. The⁢ Malaysian Ministry of Health clarified that HMPV, caused by a virus in the ⁣pneumoviridae family, is not a new⁢ disease. While many ⁤cases present with common cold-like symptoms, severe infections can lead⁤ to bronchitis or pneumonia.

In response to the increase, the Malaysian Ministry of Health issued a public health advisory. “The public is advised to proactively‌ maintain their health and prevent transmission to others, especially in closed and crowded places,” the ministry stated. “This includes‌ those planning to travel to at-risk countries.”

China Faces Winter Respiratory Illness wave

China’s northern provinces have also seen ⁣a recent surge in HMPV cases, particularly among children under 14.⁤ Data from the week of⁤ December⁢ 16-22, 2024, revealed a notable increase in acute⁢ respiratory disease‍ infections nationwide. An official with China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned that the country is highly likely to experience a wave of various respiratory infections throughout the winter and spring months.

The increase in respiratory infections during the change of ⁣seasons is a common occurrence globally, but the severity and scale of the ⁢current outbreaks in both Malaysia and China are ⁣prompting international health organizations to monitor the situation closely. The situation underscores the importance of preventative measures, such as frequent handwashing,mask-wearing in crowded areas, and covering‌ coughs ‌and sneezes.

While these outbreaks are primarily ⁤impacting‌ Asia,U.S. health officials are monitoring the situation for⁣ any potential implications for the United States.similar seasonal surges in respiratory illnesses are common in the U.S.,‍ and public health recommendations for preventing the spread of respiratory viruses remain consistent year-round.

Global Respiratory ⁤Virus Surge: An Interview with Dr. Lena Zhao

Senior Editor:‍ Thank you for joining us today,‍ Dr. Zhao.‌ The world‍ is seeing an alarming rise in respiratory viruses, notably HMPV. Can you tell us more ‍about this virus and why we’re seeing this surge now?

Dr.‌ Lena Zhao: ⁣It’s a pleasure to be hear. HMPV, or human metapneumovirus, is a common respiratory virus that typically‌ causes mild, cold-like symptoms. ‌However,it can be more serious for young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The current surge is highly likely due to several ⁤factors, including ‌seasonal changes, increased social interactions, and possibly⁢ waning‌ immunity from previous infections.

Senior editor: Malaysia‍ and ⁤China have reported importent‍ increases in HMPV⁣ cases. What are the specific concerns you have about these ‍outbreaks?

Dr. Zhao: ‍The rapid rise in cases in both countries is ⁤concerning, especially among children ‍in China. While HMPV is usually not life-threatening,the sheer volume of infections can strain healthcare systems and lead to⁢ complications in vulnerable populations. The fact ⁣that these outbreaks are ⁣happening concurrently in⁣ different parts of the world adds to our concern.

Senior Editor: What‌ precautions are recommended for individuals to protect themselves from HMPV ‌and other respiratory ⁤viruses?

Dr. ⁤Zhao:

The same precautions we’ve emphasized throughout the pandemic remain highly ⁣effective. This includes frequent‌ handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and wearing masks in crowded ⁢indoor settings. People should also‍ stay home when sick and avoid close contact with ‌those who are vulnerable.

We also recommend staying up-to-date on vaccinations, including‍ the flu shot, as this can help reduce the overall burden of respiratory illnesses.

Senior Editor: What kind of monitoring is being done internationally to track the situation?

dr. Zhao: Global health organizations like the World Health Association (WHO) are closely monitoring the situation in real-time, collecting data on HMPV cases and other respiratory infections. This allows them to identify patterns, assess the severity⁢ of outbreaks, and provide timely guidance ⁢to countries.

We’re also seeing increased‌ collaboration between nations in ‍sharing facts ‌and best practices for managing these outbreaks. This international cooperation is crucial to effectively responding to a ⁤global health threat.

Senior⁤ Editor: What message would you like to‌ give to our readers today?

Dr. Zhao: ‍ While ‍these outbreaks are concerning, it’s vital to remember that we have the tools to protect ourselves and ‌our communities. By taking individual preventative measures and staying informed, we ‌can definitely help minimize the impact ‍of these viruses. Let’s work together to protect our health and well-being. **

written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Egypt Expands Access to Reproductive Healthcare Services, Reaching Millions

In a significant effort to improve women’s health across Egypt, the Ministry of Health and Population alongside the Ministry of Local Development announced a series of initiatives aimed at increasing access to family planning and reproductive healthcare.

Throughout 2024, mobile clinics traversed remote and underserved areas, providing essential services to over 1.3 million individuals. "In 2024, (113,301) mobile clinics were visited to provide services," the Ministry of Health and Population revealed. A staggering 416,999 individuals were new beneficiaries, highlighting the significant impact of these outreach programs.

Supplementing these efforts, a unique project dubbed "Our Days are Better" saw 8,641 reproductive health convoys deployed across the country. Female doctors trained in family planning and reproductive health provided vital care to over 741,626 individuals, with 122,994 accessing these services for the first time.

The Ministry also recognized the need to address medical gaps in established healthcare units. Through the Visiting Doctor System, over 61,692 visits were conducted to units lacking sufficient personnel, reaching 2,165,815 beneficiaries, including an impressive 713,635 new patients.

Underscoring its commitment to comprehensive care, the Ministry expanded the range of family planning methods available.

"New types of family planning methods have been added to the cafe methods (hormonal IUDs, dendritic IUDs, third-generation monopills, fourth-generation combination pills, and self-injected single injections under the skin)," the Ministry stated. To further enhance accessibility, NGOs and other organizations now receive family planning methods at subsidized prices tailored to their needs.

Emphasizing the importance of consistent messaging, the Ministry is developing a unified guide for health communication covering critical topics such as family planning, reproductive health, maternal and child health, nutrition, and the prevention of infectious and chronic diseases.

These initiatives demonstrate Egypt’s commitment to improving women’s health outcomes and empowering them to make informed choices about their reproductive well-being. The program’s success in reaching millions suggests a positive step towards a healthier and more equitable future for Egyptian women.

They warn of a decline in the stock market for the health of the uninsured population

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com November 29, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

By 2025, it is estimated that federal health spending per user without social security will be 4,490 pesos, 22.6% lower than what was approved in 2024, warned the group México Evalúa.

In the analysis “Health for everyone. Guaranteeing that all Mexicans have access to health” the civil organization said that health spending for people without social security has decreased significantly in recent years.

“In 2020 Seguro Popular was abolished and replaced by Insabi; However, in the middle of 2023 it was ordered that the disappearance of Insabi IMSS-Wellbeing was implemented. The changes in the methods to operate access to health services are not accompanied by a budget increase: in 2024 the approved budget for the IMSS-Wellbeing is 127,000 million pesos, 13.7% more than the Insabi in 2023, but more below what was achieved. with Seguro Popular in 2012 and 2013,” it was pointed out.

In this context, México Evalúa reported that the cost, per user, of the IMSS-Bienestar for this 2024 was 1,812 pesos, a decrease of 4% (77 pesos) compared to the last year of Seguro Popular, or 27% (654). pesos) compared to the peak in 2012.”

The NGO explained that, in general, access to health has worsened since, “in 2018, 20 million people did not have access to health services (16.2% of the total), after the pandemic distributed such need affected 50.3 million in 2022 (39.1% of the total).

Fonsabi

Regarding the Health Fund for Wellbeing (Fonsabi), México Evalúa pointed out that it is unclear and there is no certainty about what has been spent on it, in addition to the fact that its resources have decreased.

“In 2021, Insabi made transfers to Fonsabi for 64.4 billion pesos, which was considered effective health expenditure. However, that same year, Fonsabi returned 101,000 million pesos to the Finance Department of the Federation, so the record of the resources was lost, that is, it is impossible to know if they were spent on health. Then, in 2022, Insabi transferred 49,000 million pesos to Fonsabi, who returned 72,000 million pesos to Tesofe. That is, for two years in a row health spending has been increased,” it was said.

Regarding the resources in the NGO’s analysis, it was revealed that they have decreased by half.

“At the end of the last six-year term it recorded 117,000 million pesos, but at the end of 2023 it had only 41,000 million, 65% (76,000 million) lower than what it had at the end of 2018,” he said.
