ANKARA (Reuters) – Turkey’s parliament is “likely” to ratify Finland’s NATO membership before it closes in mid-April ahead of May elections. Two government officials told Reuters on Thursday. Finnish President Niinist visits Turkey on the 16th.

Finland and Sweden applied for NATO membership last year after Russia invaded Ukraine. Membership requires ratification by all member states, but Turkey has expressed reservations about Sweden’s membership over the Kurdish armed group it has designated as an outlawed organization.

Officials said they expected Finland’s membership to be ratified, with Sweden separated.

Talks between Turkey and Sweden have not progressed. Trilateral talks among Turkey, Sweden and Finland were held in Brussels this week as well, but Swedish Prime Minister Kristation said on the 14th that the possibility of Finland joining first has increased.

[モスクワ 12日 ロイター] – Evgeny Prigozhin, founder of the Russian private military company Wagner, said in an interview published over the weekend that he has ambitions to make Wagner an “ideological army” fighting for justice in Russia.

Wagner fighters have been leading offensives in eastern Ukraine in recent months, mainly in the strategic town of Bakhmut. Russia sees Bakhmut as an important stepping stone to occupying larger cities.

“After the capture of Artemovsk[Russian name for Bakhmut]we will restart,” Prigozhin said in a video posted on a Wagner-related Telegram channel. “We will start recruiting new personnel, especially from this region,” he said.

“Wagner needs to change from being the best civilian force in the world capable of defending a country to a military with an ideology, and that ideology is a struggle for justice,” he said.

Prigozhin said on Thursday that he had opened combatant recruitment centers in 42 cities.

[ロンドン 10日 ロイター] – Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Russian private military company Wagner, said on Monday that it has opened combatant recruitment centers in 42 cities. Wagner is believed to have suffered heavy losses at Bakhmut, a strategic battlefield in eastern Ukraine where fierce fighting continues.

In a cheerful voice message, Prigozin said new fighters were being recruited, but did not specify how many. He also said that while ammunition supplies have improved, there remains cause for concern.

Wagner led the fiercest fighting in Bakhmut, where Ukrainian forces have held up after more than seven months of attrition.

[モスクワ 2日 ロイター] – A Russian news agency reported on the 2nd that in Bryansk Oblast, which borders Ukraine, a Ukrainian sabotage group has taken hostages at a store and is fighting Russian forces.

Ukraine, meanwhile, denies it as a fake “provocation” by Russia.

“Ukrainian sabotage groups infiltrated two villages and took local residents hostage in one of them. They engaged soldiers of the Russian National Guard,” state-run TASS news agency quoted a security official as saying.

Several people were taken hostage at a store in Lubechanye, a village less than a kilometer from the Ukrainian border, Russian news agency RIA said, citing local officials.

Earlier, Bryansk governor Bogomaz wrote on the messaging app Telegram that a Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group had entered Lubechanye and opened fire on a car, killing a resident.

It also said Ukrainian forces carried out drone strikes and shelled another area near the border.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was responding to the defeat of “Ukrainian terrorists” and that Putin had been briefed on the situation by security officials and Defense Minister Shoigu.

Putin also called it a terrorist act.

[ベルリン 2日 ロイター] – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on China on Monday to stop supplying Russia with weapons as it continues to invade Ukraine and instead pressure China to withdraw its troops.

In his speech to Congress, he said he regretted China’s refraining from condemning the Russian aggression while applauding its efforts toward nuclear disarmament.

“The message to the Chinese government is clear: do not use your influence to persuade Russia to withdraw its troops and hand over any weapons to the aggressor Russia,” he said.

International responses, such as China and India not blaming Russia for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have highlighted the division in the world.

Multiple sources told Reuters this week that the United States is approaching close allies about possible new sanctions against China if China provides military aid to Russia.

These moves are still in the preliminary stage, but coordination of support centering on the G7 countries is being considered.

[ブダペスト 1日 ロイター] – The Hungarian parliament has started deliberations on the ratification of Finland and Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on the 1st.

Two Nordic countries applied for membership last year, but all 30 countries need to ratify. But it opposes Sweden’s membership, saying Turkey harbors people it sees as members of terrorist groups.

In Hungary, which has been slow to ratify, Prime Minister Orban last week first expressed concern over the two countries’ accession. He accused both countries of spreading “outright lies” about Hungary’s democracy and rule of law.

Fides lawmakers said they would continue to hold talks with the two countries, but issued a statement that the ruling party “supports Finland and Sweden joining NATO.”

During a general debate on the bill earlier today, President Novak and a senior foreign ministry official urged Congress to ratify the two countries’ NATO membership “as soon as possible.” A final vote is expected later this month.
