GoFundMe Campaign forโ British Woman Jailed in Dubai Removed
A GoFundMe campaign raising โคfunds forโฃ the โlegal supportโข of โฃMia O’Brien,โ a 23-year-old British woman โคsentenced to lifeโฃ in prison in Dubai, has been taken down by the platform for violating its termsโ of service. โThe fundraiser, โฃlaunched โby O’Brien’s mother,โข Danielle McKenna, of โขHuyton, Liverpool, โhad amassed nearlyโฃ ยฃ700 of its ยฃ1,600 โgoal beforeโ itsโ removal.
GoFundMe stated the โcampaign โขbreached Term 9 of itsโข Prohibited โConduct section, โขwhich prohibits fundraising for the “legal defense of certain alleged โcrimes.”โค
McKenna โคwrote on theโ now-deleted page thatโข her daughter,โ a former lawโ student, “made a very stupid mistake” and is currently held in Dubai’s central โขprison. “Mia has been given aโข life sentence over in Dubai and she is nowโข in central prison,” she stated.”As her mother I am absolutely devastated. I haven’t seen my daughter as last October.”
McKenna โhad โขindicated the funds would beโค used for โlegal โfees, to sendโข money to O’Brien, and potentially to facilitate family visits โฃto Dubai, as no family member has seen her since October.
The specific crimeโ for which O’Brien was convicted remains undisclosed. However, life sentences in the United Arab emirates are commonlyโ issued forโข offenses including drug trafficking andโ possession, murder, attempted โคmurder, and โฃhuman trafficking. The โFCDO warns of a “zeroโฃ tolerance” policyโฃ for drug-related offensesโค in Dubai, with “severe” penalties for even possessingโข residual amounts.
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth โค&โค Growth Office (FCDO) confirmed they are “supporting the family of a British womanโค detained in the UAE andโฃ are in contactโค with the local authorities.”
