Highland Elementary Investigates Potential โขThreat List
Columbus, OH – Highland Elementary School was briefly placed on lockdown Tuesday as โColumbus Police investigated a concerning list reportedly created by a 10-year-old student.โ The list allegedly contained the names of students andโ staff the child intended to harm.
police where called to theโข school justโค before noon โafter administrators were alerted to theโข list by concerned students. โคParents like brianna New โคexpressed worry and a desire to understand the situation. “I would realy like โคto know what โled this child to do โthis, and โขwhatโ was goingโ through their mind,” New โstated.
Experts โsuggest underlying issues โคmay be at play.Dr. David Lowenstein, a psychologist practicing in German Village,โข explained that such behavior ofen stems from feelings of isolation or mistreatment. “Children in theseโ situations often feel helpless and overwhelmed,” Dr. Lowenstein said. “They may feel likeโ nothing they do is right, and that their anger andโ frustration aren’t being acknowledged, even if โthey aren’t directly communicating their struggles.”
School officials responded to the incident with a letterโ to โฃparents, reaffirming their commitment to student safety and urging open interaction about managing emotions. The letter emphasized the importanceโ of discussing the impact of words, notably whenโข children are upset.
Dr. Lowenstein echoed this sentiment, advising parents to proactively engage with their โขchildren. “Make dedicated time to talk about what’s happening in their lives. Don’t wait for them to initiate the conversation – create a safe โspace where they feel comfortable sharingโฃ their thoughts and feelings.”
many parents,โค including New, areโข seeking information about whether their children were specificallyโ named on the list. โฃ”I’m โขanxious to know if my child wasโ targeted, but the school isn’t releasing that information,” sheโ said. ABC Sixโ has contacted Columbus โCity Schools for clarification on whetherโ individuals listed will be notifiedโ directly and is awaiting a response.
The student โwho allegedly created the list has been taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital โขfor a โฃmental health evaluation. The school districtโฃ is preparing to takeโ disciplinary action, and Columbusโค Police are โฃcurrently investigating to determine if criminal charges are warranted.
New praised the students who came forward with the information, โsaying, “They were understandably frightened, but I’m grateful โthey felt safeโ enoughโ to report it.”
