TeenS invention Revolutionizing Emergency Bleeding Control: A Gel That โStops Wounds Fast
MARIETTA, GA – A โคrevolutionary gel designed toโ rapidly control โsevere bleeding, invented by a teenager,โ is gaining traction with first responders โand attracting attention from โtheโ U.S. Department โฃof Defense. TRAUMAGEL, developed by Cresilon, โคis โpoised to become a new standard in emergency trauma care, potentially saving countless lives.
The story began with Joe Landolina, who, โas a highโ school student,โข witnessed a friend suffer a deep laceration. โFrustrated by the limitations of traditional methods to โstop the bleeding, Landolina began โคexperimentingโ in his home lab.โฃ Thisโข led to the creation of TRAUMAGEL, a plant-derived polysaccharide gel that quickly clots blood upon contact.
“Severe โbleeding is the number one cause โฃof preventable deathโฃ from trauma,” explains Landolina, now โCEO and co-founder of โคCresilon. “We wanted to create something that โwas fast, effective, and easy to use, even in the most challenging situations.”
And it is fast. โฃTRAUMAGEL works by rapidly absorbing water โfrom the blood, concentrating clotting factors and forming a stable clot. Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services in Georgia isโฃ among the first to adopt the gel, recognizing its potentialโฃ toโ dramatically improve patient outcomes.”It’s a game changer,” said a representative from Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services, as shown in a photo โฃaccompanying theโฃ announcement. “This gel gives us a critical advantage in controlling severe bleeding, buying us valuable time to get patients โthe definitive care they โคneed.”
The impact isn’t limited to local fire departments. Cresilon is working to get TRAUMAGEL โinto the hands of first responders nationwide. Beyond civilian applications, the U.S. Defense Department’s Walter Reed Army Institute of Research is currently studying โฃthe technology for its potential in treating penetrating traumatic brain injuries โ(TBI).
“Preliminary findings demonstrated promising results in the ability of our technology to control bleeding and provide neuroprotection following a TBI,” Landolina stated. โ Further โresearchโข is โplanned based on these โencouraging initial results.
The potential reach of TRAUMAGEL extends far โbeyond the battlefield and ambulance. Cresilon envisions a future where the gel is readily available in hospitals, dental offices, and even home first-aid โkits, empowering individuals to respond effectively to โขlife-threatening bleeding emergencies.
