Government Initiatives to Strengthen Democracy and Civic Engagement in Germany

More than 200 individual measures are intended to strengthen the country’s democratic community in almost all areas of society: tolerance training in schools, prison projects, better help for victims of right-wing extremist violence and the integration of refugees. It is important to teach citizens how they can get involved in local politics and help shape it, explained Culture Minister Bettina Martin (SPD). Martin and the director of the State Center for Civic Education, Jochen Schmidt, once again criticized the federal government’s plans to cut political education. They are a fatal signal. In times of great change – the war in Ukraine, climate change and controversies at the federal level – democracy is under pressure.

40 events on days of political education in MV

09/05/2023 4:31 p.m

Schwerin/Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) – The organizers are hoping for a lively turnout and lively discussions for the days of political education in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. As Susan Schulz from the Heinrich Böll Foundation announced on Tuesday in Schwerin, 40 events are planned nationwide so far.

A discussion event with the author Anne Rabe, who was born in Wismar, marks the start on September 15th in Neubrandenburg. Her latest novel, “The Possibility of Happiness”, which deals with dealing with the history of the GDR, was nominated for the German Book Prize 2023.

The start date was just as consciously chosen as the end of the two-week series of events, it said. September 15, 2007 was declared International Day of Democracy by the United Nations General Assembly. October 3rd, on which a joint reading by the award-winning author Helga Schubert and Anne Rabe is planned to conclude in Rostock, is the Day of German Unity.

The current debate about the post-reunification period and respect for the life achievements of East Germans is only one aspect of the series of events, said the head of the state center for political education, Jochen Schmidt. Of course, it will also be about the increasingly obvious skepticism about democracy and the need to promote democratic participation. “Political education is an ongoing task. It starts with imparting knowledge about historical contexts and ways of getting involved,” explained Schmidt.

He was critical of the federal government’s announcements that it would cut funding for the Federal Agency for Civic Education by 20 percent. So far, project sponsors in the north-east have also received federal funding. Cuts would therefore affect their work, predicted Schmidt. The state government in Schwerin, on the other hand, did not plan to cut funds in political education in its draft budget for 2024 and 2025.

According to Schmidt, the days of political education are a joint campaign by political education providers and foundations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the state center for political education. The program shows the wide variety of offers, both regionally and in terms of content.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Schwesig to Focus on Business and Work during Summer Tour

Schwerin (dpa / mv) – Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) will mainly visit flagship companies on her summer tour, which begins on Friday. She wants to complete 17 appointments in seven days, as the head of government announced in Schwerin on Thursday. In addition to company visits, this also includes visits to the German Maritime Museum in Stralsund together with Federal Building Minister Klara Geywitz (SPD), the Wismar Sweden Festival and the zoo in Schwerin.

According to Schwesig, the focus of the summer tour is on business and work. The preservation and creation of new jobs is and remains the most important task of the state government, she said. The energy crisis and inflation bothered citizens and companies. “That’s why it’s important to look at how we as a country can support, but above all where are the future issues.”

On the first day of the tour, Schwesig wants to visit the Hoeller Elektrolyzer company in Wismar and find out about the progress of the major topic of green hydrogen. According to her words, the state government wants to spend 800 million euros in the upcoming double budget for the expansion of renewable energies. This also includes the conversion into hydrogen, which is intended to be used to store the irregularly occurring wind and solar power. So far, however, the costs have been high. Schwesig replied that many were initially skeptical about wind power and that today it is marketable and a great success.

In the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim, visits to an export-oriented confectionery manufacturer and a successful meat processor are on the agenda for next Monday. On Tuesday, Schwesig wants to open the Schwerin State Zoo Day with free entry for all children up to the age of 14. On Wednesday is the head of government in the district of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, where, in addition to company visits, the state government’s export evening in Neubrandenburg is also to take place. Further dates apply to agriculture on Thursday and tourism on the Baltic Sea coast on Friday next week. It should also address the shortage of skilled workers.

Inflation Rate in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Falls Below 7% for the First Time in a Year

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com June 7, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Schwerin (dpa/mv) – The slowdown in inflation seen since the beginning of the year has continued in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. As reported by the Statistical Office in Schwerin on Wednesday, the annual inflation rate in the north-east fell to 6.5 percent in May and thus fell below the 7 percent mark for the first time in a year. Despite the recent decline, consumers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania felt the price increases compared to the previous year more clearly than in other federal states. Across Germany, prices rose by 6.1 percent in May compared to the same month last year.

People in the north-east had to dig deeper into their pockets than a year ago, especially for groceries. According to statistics, food was 15.2 percent more expensive in May. 19.6 percent more had to be paid for baked goods and 19.8 percent more for vegetables. Some of the price premiums for dairy products were even higher, but butter prices continued to fall.

Prices for fuel, which were among the biggest price drivers in the previous year, continued to fall. Diesel and petrol were 14.3 percent cheaper than a year ago. As was the case with gas customers, district heating customers are now feeling the effects of the energy crisis. They had to pay 41.8 percent more in May than a year ago. Visits to restaurants and hotels also became more expensive.

Compared to the previous month of April, consumer prices in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania fell by a minimum of 0.2 percent.

The European Central Bank (ECB) is trying to dampen inflation with higher interest rates. Because higher interest rates make loans more expensive, which can slow down demand. The central bank is aiming for stable prices overall for the euro area with an inflation rate of two percent.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival regains audience after three years

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 22, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Schwerin (dpa/mv) – The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival is slowly winning back its audience after three years with a limited program due to the corona and decimated space.

According to artistic director Ursula Haselböck, four weeks before the opening concert on June 17 in Neubrandenburg, almost a fifth of all events are sold out. “We have set up waiting lists for these. But numerous concerts, especially the big ones, can still be booked at the moment. With our new ticket shop online until the day of the event,” said Haselböck of the German Press Agency in Schwerin. She took over the direction of the festival in September 2020 and is now looking forward to her first season without restrictions.

The Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is one of the largest classical music festivals in Germany. From mid-June to mid-September, 134 concerts and events are on the programme. Classical stars such as violinists Julia Fischer and Viviane Hagner, cellist Daniel Müller-Schott and pianist Alfred Brendel are again expected this summer. On the occasion of his 50th birthday, a musical festival will be dedicated to the exceptional violinist Daniel Hope, who has been loyal to the festival as an interpreter and consultant for many years.

The focus of the season is Lithuanian accordionist Martynas Levickis, who will play 26 concerts alone as the winner in residence.

The actors Martina Gedeck and Klaus-Maria Brandauer will appear as reciters and orchestras such as the NDR Elbphilharmonie, the New Century Chamber Orchestra San Francisco or the Academy of St Martin in the Fields will fill the halls with their sound. Musical border crossings are also planned, among others with the trumpeter Till Brönner and the singer Gisbert zu Knyphausen. Haselböck was convinced that one of the festival’s strengths lies in the variety of concert formats and locations.

At a total of 85 venues in the state, which can accommodate between 100 and 9000 guests, the festival invites you to events this summer. The picnic concerts at the state stud in Redefin, the concerts in the festival barn in Ulrichshusen and in the parks of Bothmer near Klütz and Göhren-Lebbin on Fleesensee are traditionally particularly popular with the public.

Venues are, above all, churches, workshops and converted barns, in which young musicians can also try out their skills as part of the Young Elite competition. Previous winners, including Julia Fischer, Daniel Hope, Igor Levit and Martynas Levickis, are regularly invited to the festival.

written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Rostock/Schwerin (dpa/mv) – The housing association Schifffahrt Hafen Rostock receives a loan worth millions to convert gas heating systems to district heating. The Ministry of Construction announced on Sunday in Schwerin that 1.7 million euros were available from the housing modernization program. The loan is interest-free and a quarter of it does not have to be repaid.

According to the information, the cooperative wants to use the money to modernize 217 apartments on Gerüstbauerring, in an eleven-storey block of flats from 1983. The construction work should be completed by the end of 2024.

“With our program, which we have adapted to current developments this year, we are helping to ensure socially acceptable housing costs,” commented Building Minister Christian level (SPD).
