concerns Rise Among Young Travellers โคAhead of Manchester Christmas markets
MANCHESTER, England – Young members of the travelling community โare expressing fear โand โanxietyโ ahead of the annual visit to Manchester’s Christmas markets,โค citing a lack of engagement โขwith Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and concerns about being unfairly targeted. Communityโค leaders sayโค families are hesitant to allow their children to attend the markets due to perceived inaction from police following issues atโ last year’s โevent.
Tommy Joyce and Paddyโค Doherty lead โa โprotest โraising thes concerns. Joyce stated, “I want them to work with โฃthe police rather than against the โคpolice. Iโค wantโ communities to integrate together and relaxโ and be happy and enjoy each other. I hope the police will do theirโฃ job this time better than they did last year. If โthere’s rowdiness, then roundโ up that group and get them gone but don’t tar โall of them with โthe same brushโ like happened last year.”
Joyce also expressed โdisappointment at the lack of dialog fromโ senior GMP figures over the past year, adding, “A โขyear later โขand they’re not โขinterested until something happens andโค they’ll be all over it โagain. I’veโค been โpretty shocked at that to be honest and that’sโ one of โขthe reasonsโ families are scared to โletโฃ their children to theโฃ markets, because there’s โbeen โคno interaction โwithโ the police.”
GMP has responded, stating they have prioritizedโ engagement withโฃ the travellingโข community in โthe last 12 monthsโ to prevent a repeat of last year’s issues. Assistant Chief Constable chris Sykes said,”we’ve recognised the importance โof listening to the travelling community and engaging with them in the last 12 months to ensure that last year’sโค understandable distress and concern is not repeated.”
Sykes highlighted a collaborativeโฃ approach with the Deputy Mayor’s office โคto improve โlocal policing, including meetings with membersโ of โคthe traveller community as recently as โThursday toโฃ discuss policing plans โคfor the busy weekend.
“Our focus is on dialogue, visibility and reassurance rather thanโ enforcement, unless absolutely necessary, and we’llโข beโ working with โคpartners, business, โand marketgoers to ensure everyone feelsโฃ welcome and โคsafe in our city,” โคSykes added.
Theโข Manchester Christmasโค markets, a popular annual event, โฃdraw large crowds and traditionally see โvisits from members of the travelling community. The situation underscores ongoing efforts to foster positive relationships betweenโ law enforcement and diverse communities withinโ the city.
