Doha ∙ Qatar Rail can now use Doha Metro travel cards for Metro Link bus journeys. The aim is to make travel on Metro Links, which are feeder buses for metro passengers, easier. Standard and Gold Club card holders can use the service by tapping the card on the bus’s reader while entering the buses. However, paper tickets of the metro will not get this service.

Officials clarified that children above 5 years of age also need to tap the travel card on the bus reader to use the Metro Link service. Metro Link QR Code and Karva Smart Cards implemented in the first phase are also in effect.

Metrolink feeder buses allow free travel for passengers within 2 to 5 km of Doha Metro stations. Passengers within 5 km radius of the station can alight from the metro and board Metro Link buses to reach home free of cost. Thousands of people use the Doha Metro and Metro Link buses every day.

Link buses run Sunday to Wednesday from 5.30am to 11.59pm, Thursdays from 5.30am to 1am, Fridays from 2pm to 1am and Saturdays from 6am to 11.50pm. There are 60 Metro Link routes from Doha Metro stations on the Metro’s Red, Green and Gold lines to various regions.

Bahrain’s Parliament Approves Law to Tax Remittances from Expatriates: Government Opposes Decision

Manama: Bahrain’s parliament has approved a law to tax remittances from expatriates. The matter was referred to the Supreme Council, the Shura Council, for a final decision.

Parliament has approved a law to impose a levy of two percent on each remittance by a non-resident person. The proposal was submitted by Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam to the Shura Council, the upper house. Although the government opposed the proposal of the MPs, the parliament approved it. The government has argued that taxing remittances is unfair and unconstitutional.

The government also took the position that the levy is a violation of freedom of exchange of money. Bahrain has signed several international agreements and treaties with countries around the world regarding freedom of money transfer. The government has clarified in its written reply to the MPs that it cannot be violated. The government has assessed that the removal of taxes will have a negative impact on the economy and will have a negative impact on the financial and commercial sectors.

The government took the position that the tax would lead to the emergence of illegal transfer channels and the taxes would be evaded by workers and forced to be paid by sponsors, adding to the financial burden on businessmen. The government also explained that expatriates in leadership positions in companies and banks in Bahrain will move to other countries. The Bahrain Chamber and the Bahrain Business Men’s Association have expressed opposition to the proposal.

Officials revealed that the number of natives in the private sector has crossed 90,000 with the addition of 13,000 jobs in the last six months. After the implementation of the Swadeshi program in September 2021, the number of Emiratis in the private sector has increased by 157 percent.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation appreciated the commitment of more than 19,000 companies that have employed expatriates. Meanwhile, with the implementation of the law requiring the appointment of natives in small firms, it is expected that the number of natives will increase again this year. It was suggested that private companies with 20 to 49 employees should hire a native from January.

Next year one more native should also be appointed. Earlier, indigenization was implemented in organizations with more than 50 employees. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has identified 12,000 private companies with 20-49 employees in the country. According to this, 12,000 new jobs will be created for the natives in the coming years.

96,000 dirhams will be charged from the institution in January 2025 if no appointment is made. In 2025, in addition to the current Swadeshi employee, another Swadeshi should be appointed. Failure to do so will result in a fine of Dhs 1,08,000 in January 2026. The indigenization proposal has been applied to small private enterprises in 14 regions.
