Zimbabwe’s Remarkable Comeback in International Cricket

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com July 2, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

5 matches unbeaten, team totals above 250 in 5 matches and ‘Valyetan’ leading the way with 3 centuries in 5 matches – Zimbabwe’s run in the One Day Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament has been one of the biggest revivals the cricket world has seen in recent times. They were once the dark horses of ODI cricket.

But in 2019, the ICC banned Zimbabwe from international matches citing financial irregularities and political interference in the board. Later the team lost sponsors. Despite the change in the ban, the team did not recover from the financial crisis. They were reduced to the situation of having to take the players on local buses and drop them off for the matches. From there they are set to play another ODI World Cup.

∙ To the Qualifier Round

Zimbabwe was forced to play the qualifier round in order to participate in the ODI Cricket World Cup starting in October, as it was not able to make it into the top ten in the ICC ODI rankings. They came out determined to win the qualifiers in their own country at any cost.

Zimbabwe have been drawn in Group B with the West Indies and the Netherlands. But they officially won all 4 matches in the group and entered the Qualifier Super Six round as group champions. Their team totals in the qualifiers were 291, 319, 268, 408 and 332 respectively.

∙ Elder to lead

The veteran of the team, Shaun Williams, who scored 532 runs at an average of 133 runs, including 3 centuries from 5 matches, is the backbone of this second coming of Zimbabwe. Thirty-six-year-old Shaun scored 142, 174, 23, 91, 102* in the tournament. All-rounder Sikandar Raza with 260 runs and 9 wickets is also a solid support for Shaun.

∙ Flowering season of Zimbabwe

The 5 years from 1997 to 2002 are considered to be the golden era of Zimbabwean cricket. Zimbabwe’s strength that day was a number of great players, including the Flower brothers (Andy Flower and Grand Flower), Heath Streak and Henry Olonga. They managed to win matches against every other Test cricket playing nation except Australia during this period.

They shocked the cricketing world by upsetting India and South Africa in the 1999 ODI World Cup. But at the end of 2003, the internal problems that arose in the Zimbabwean board and the political and economic situation in the country slowly pushed the team and the players to collapse.

Allegations Against Cricketer Prithvi Shaw By Influencer Sapna Gill Declared False: Police

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com June 28, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

MUMBAI: The police are of the opinion that the allegations leveled by social media influencer and Bhojpuri actress Sapna Gill against Indian cricketer Prithvi Shah are false. The police told the court that Sapna’s complaint that Prithvi Shah assaulted and molested her at a pub in Mumbai was ‘false and had no evidence’.

The investigating officer appeared before the magistrate and submitted the report. But Sapna’s lawyer Ali Kashif Khan said that the video of Prithvi Shah attacking Sapna is on her phone and can be submitted to the court. The lawyer also claimed to have CCTV footage from outside the pub.

The court adjourned the case after asking the police to produce the entire footage of the incident. Prithvi Shah and his friend were attacked in front of a luxury hotel in Mumbai in the early hours of February 15. The complaint of Prithvi Shah’s friend is that when he got into the vehicle and escaped, the assailants who were following him hit the vehicle at the signal. Sapna Gill was arrested by the Mumbai police the very next day.

After her release, Sapna filed a case in the Andheri Magistrate Court. A case was also filed against Prithvi Shah’s friend Surendra Yadav on Sapna’s complaint. Sapna’s complaint is that she was insulted and physically assaulted by the Indian cricketer and her friend in a public place. In the complaint, Sapna alleged that Prithvi Shah pushed her by holding her chest.

Sapna had demanded that sections 354, 509 and 324 of the IPC be charged against the cricketer for assault with a bat. Medical documents were also submitted to the court along with the complaint to prove the sexual assault. Sapna Gill has also approached the court demanding action against airport police station officials Satish Kavankar and Bhagwat Garande who did not take action despite Sapna’s complaint.

England and Australia Prepare for Ashes Battle in Second Test at Lords

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com June 28, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

London ∙ The second match of the Ashes Test series between Australia and England will start today at the Lords Cricket Ground. England, who lost the first Test, must win this match to return to the series. Twenty-five-year-old pacer Josh Tong has been included in the England squad in place of all-rounder Moeen Ali, who suffered a finger injury.

With this, part-time spinner Joe Root will be the only spin option in the team. Australia will leave without any significant changes in the team that won the first test. Mitchell Starc will replace all-rounder Cameron Green in the starting eleven if they decide to play one more pacer.

With England opting to go with 4 pacers, it is certain that the pitch at Lodz will favor the pace bowlers. In the first Test at Edgbaston, the pitch was in favor of the batsmen and spin bowlers. The pitch at Edgbaston was criticized by English pacer James Anderson. In this situation, it is reported that a pitch has been prepared to help the pacers in Lodz.
