Ukrainian-Made ‘Predator‘โ Turret Adapts Airโ Defense โTech to Counter Drone Swarms in Ukraine
Ukraine’s UGV Robotics is rapidly deploying a novel automated gunโ turret, originally conceived for โฃnaval drones, to the front lines to combat the escalating threat ofโ First-Person View (FPV) drones. The “predator” system, capable โof hitting targets up to sevenโฃ inches โฃin size at 100 meters, has already been demonstrated toโค NATOโฃ and is slated โฃforโข immediate deployment with Ukrainian forces.
Developedโ initially as โคa โdefensive system forโ unmanned surfaceโฃ vessels, the Predator turret’s adaptation highlightsโข Ukraine’s innovative response toโ the challengesโ posed โby drone warfare. UGV Roboticsโฃ CEO โstated the prosperous integration of the system into a waterproof dome for naval use โฃwas “an extremely complex process,” but the company believes its effectivenessโฃ translates โคseamlessly to land-based applications. The turret fires 7.62โ caliber bullets and utilizes gyroscopic stabilization, optical sensors, โandโข artificialโ intelligenceโ for autonomous target detection, โalerting the operator before engaging.
The system’s core functionality lies in its โabilityโ toโ identify and track drones, presenting theโข operator with โthe โoption to lock on and fire. Beyond naval โขapplications, the Predator hasโ proven versatile, capable of being mounted on tracked vehicles or even pick-up trucks, enabling mobile defense against aerialโค threats. UGV Robotics is already โproducing over 30 “Ancestor”โข units – the current model – โคand aims toโฃ scale โฃproduction to approximately 100 per โmonthโค within six โmonths,โข with a โunit cost of underโ $100,000 for the Ukrainian military.
The company showcased the โPredator at a NATO “Innovation Challenge” focused on countering FPV drones and recently demonstrated its capabilities remotely during a NATOโข testโค event in France. UGV Robotics is actively pursuing sales to NATOโ member states,โค with reportedโค interest from multiple countries. Looking ahead, โthe company plans to developโฃ the “apex Predator,” โa โlarger turretโค firing .50-caliber rounds for engaging more โsubstantial targets.
