Brasilia. Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim said Friday that he is considering investing more than 40 billion reais (about $7.7 billion) in Brazil over the next four years, after meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasilia.

Slim, whose family controls telecommunications giant América Móvil, said the investments would be made in Brazil’s 5G and fiber optic networks.

Claro, owned by América Móvil, is a major player in the telecommunications sector of the South American country.

“In the last five years we have invested more than 50 billion (reals) and now we are thinking about more than 40 billion reais for the next four or five years,” Slim told reporters at Brazil’s presidential palace.

Asked whether he would consider buying embattled Brazilian telecommunications firm Oi, which is in bankruptcy protection, Slim said he was not considering buying any company in Latin America’s largest economy.

Instead, “we are thinking about investing and competing more,” he said.

The former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro and 22 former collaborators went to the Federal Police this Thursday to testify about alleged coup plans prior to the inauguration of the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The investigation is focused on the riot of January 8, 2023, when, a week after Lula’s inauguration, thousands of far-right activists violently and simultaneously assaulted the headquarters of the three branches of government.

During the investigations, the Federal Police have found serious indications of conspiracies prior to that date.

The main one is the draft of a decree that would be issued before January 1, 2023, through which the “state of siege” would be imposed and the Supreme Court and electoral justice, all in order to keep Bolsonaro in power.

That suspicion led to a large police operation on February 8, when the homes of some twenty people involved were searched and four members of the Bolsonaro hard core were arrested.

In the case of Bolsonaro, who appeared to testify this Thursday in Brasiliafor now appears as being investigated in the process, but Justice forced him to hand over his passport and prohibited him from leaving the country.

In addition to Bolsonaro, four former ministers were summoned to testify this Thursday, three of them reserve generals: Walter Braga Netto, Paulo Sérgio Nogueira y Augustus Helenus.

The admiral also appeared to testify. Almir Garnierformer Navy commander, other high-ranking military personnel and the former deputy Valdemar Costa Netopresident of Liberal Partyled by the former far-right president.

Bolsonaro, whose defense has anticipated that he intends to remain silent during the statement, has stated that he is a “victim of persecution” and has denied all suspicions against him.

Furthermore, he has called an event in the city of São Paulo for next Sunday, in which he intends to gather a crowd and “defend himself” from this “persecution” of Justice, which has him as a suspect in another dozen processes, for various irregularities. EFE (I)

Israel declared today “persona non grata” the president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio ‘Lula’ da Silvawho yesterday described the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip as a genocide comparable to the Holocaust.

“We will not forgive nor forget: on my behalf and on behalf of the citizens of Israel, I informed President Lula that he is a personality non grata in Israel until he apologizes and retracts his words”The Israeli Foreign Minister announced today, Israel Katzafter meeting with the Brazilian ambassador in the country.

Yesterday Katz summoned the Brazilian ambassador to Israel, Frederico Meyerafter Lula da Silva accused Israel of emulating Adolf Hitler by committing “genocide” in the Palestinian enclave, where more than 29,000 Gazans have died in 136 days of war.

«This morning I summoned the Brazilian ambassador to Israel at the Holocaust Museum, the place that testifies more than anything else to what the Nazis and Hitler did to the Jews, including members of my family»Katz said.

Instead of at the Israeli Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, the meeting with the ambassador was at the city’s Holocaust Museum, where Katz later announced to the media his decision about Lula.

«The comparison that Brazilian President Lula makes between Israel’s just war against Hamas and the actions of Hitler and the Nazis, which exterminated 6 million Jews, is a serious anti-Semitic attack that desecrates the memory of those who perished in the Holocaust»Katz asserted.

Israel declared war on the Islamist group Hamas after he committed a brutal attack on Israeli soil that left some 1,200 dead and 250 kidnapped, of whom 130 remain held in the enclave.

“What is happening in the Gaza Strip is not a war, it is a genocide,” Lula declared yesterday at an African Union summit in Addis Ababa, where he considered that the confrontation “between a very prepared army and women and children” It had not happened before in history, except “when Hitler decided to kill the Jews.”

The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahudescribed Lula’s words as “shameful and serious” and argued that they seek to “trivialize the Holocaust” and “Israel’s right to defend itself.”

«Comparing Israel to the Nazi Holocaust and Hitler is crossing a red line. Israel fights to defend it and to ensure its future until total victory and does so respecting international law »he claimed.

The Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, also attacked Lula in X, and asked for the support of world leaders against “such accusations and the immoral distortion of history” that it represents. EFE (I)

Xuxa Meneghel: Ambassador of the Brazilian Vaccination Campaign and Critic of Bolsonaro’s Government

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 17, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The Brazilian Ministry of Health had announced that the renowned presenter Xuxa Meneghel would be the ambassador of the national vaccination campaign. And this Thursday, the first spot featuring the Brazilian artist as the protagonist was released to encourage parents to complete their children’s vaccination schedules.

The “Queen of the shorties” had been very critical of the Jair Bolsonaro government for the lack of public health policies during the pandemic and now she decided to get involved in a campaign that encourages inoculation.

In a message shared on his social networks, Xuxa urged parents this Thursday to complete their children’s vaccination card and join the multi-vaccination campaign launched by the Brazilian Ministry of Health.

The presenter highlighted in a text that: “It is time for children under 15 years of age to update their vaccination records. Zé Gotinha and I traveled together throughout Brazil to support the National Vaccination Movement. Let’s protect our children’s childhood together” .

Through its official profile, the Ministry of Health expressed its enthusiasm for having Xuxa as an ambassador for this crucial initiative. In addition, they pointed out that the main objective of this campaign is to improve vaccination rates in Brazil, prioritizing immunization against COVID-19, influenza, polio and measles.

“Xuxa’s presence and support is expected to have a significant impact on public awareness of the importance of vaccination,” they noted.

The differences with Bolsonaro

“The vaccine took… 52 years and Lu could have already been vaccinated twice if our government weren’t worried about earning a dollar per vaccine and saying no to Pfizer and other laboratories,” the singer explained, telling that her ex-partner was in serious condition. state after the delay in the purchase of vaccines against COVID-19.

The cheerleader regularly published on her social networks the importance of getting vaccinated, and of following the recommendations of the WHO, and on several occasions she spoke out against the president for his widespread anti-vaccine ideology.

“600,000 people have already died, we have to follow what scientists, doctors and the World Health Organization ask and demand of everyone in the world. Anyone who does not do that and does not follow the rules of the world is a genocide,” he said. Xuxa in another of his posts during the pandemic.

Joe Biden and Lula united to defend democracy “tested” in Brazil and the United States

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com February 11, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Received on Friday February 10 by Joe Biden, Brazilian President Lula affirmed that the two leaders “should never again allow” assaults on democracy such as those experienced by the United States in January 2021 and by Brazil in January 2023.

The US president, alongside his guest, acknowledged that democracy was “tested” in both countries on January 6, 2021 when supporters of former President Donald Trump attacked the Capitol in Washington, DC. and on January 8, 2023 when a crowd won over to former head of state Jair Bolsonaro stormed institutions in Brasilia.

But “democracy won,” said Joe Biden. The two leaders pledged to work together to “strengthen democratic institutions” and “promote respect for human rights”, according to a joint statement issued Friday evening by Washington and Brasilia.

Earlier in the day, in a brief exchange with the press in the Oval Office, before the start of the actual bilateral meeting, Lula sharply criticized his far-right predecessor, currently present in the United States, for having disseminated “false information, in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening”.

“It reminds me of something,” replied the American president.

“Bolsonaro is a faithful copy of Trump, it’s like going through the photocopier,” Lula also noted in an interview with CNN, broadcast before his meeting at the White House.

Protecting the Amazon Rainforest

“I’ll tell you one thing: Bolsonaro has no chance of becoming president of Brazil again,” he told the channel, while indicating that he would not seek the extradition of his current rival. in Florida.

“I’m not going to talk to Biden about it because it will depend on Brazilian justice,” he argued.

In the Oval Office, Lula lamented that “Brazil isolated itself for four years.”

He also reiterated his promise to eliminate deforestation in the Amazon rainforest by 2030: “Caring for the Amazon rainforest is caring for the planet, for our own survival.”

Deforestation in the Amazon has increased by 60% in each of Bolsonaro’s years in office (2019-2022).

It continued, but slowed down significantly from Lula’s first month in office.

In January, 167 km² of the largest rainforest on the planet was destroyed, the equivalent of more than 22,000 football fields.

But this is much less than the 430 km² deforested in January 2022, when Jair Bolsonaro was still in power.

The United States has announced its intention to work with Congress to fund programs for the protection and conservation of the Brazilian Amazon, including initial support for the “Amazon Fund”, a multilateral financial mechanism created in 2008 and managed by Brazil to support the fight against deforestation, details the joint press release.

“I talked about the need for rich countries to take their responsibilities to help countries with tropical forests and not just in Brazil,” Lula told reporters earlier.

Lula has relaunched this fund that his predecessor had frozen, and to which Norway and to a lesser extent Germany have contributed so far. Brazil is now looking for other donors.

On Ukraine, a sensitive subject between the United States and Brazil, Lula said during his exchange with the press that he spoke of “the need to create a group of countries that are not involved, nor directly or indirectly, in Russia’s war against Ukraine, so that we have the opportunity to build peace.”

The United States is the big driver of the Western response to Russia, while Brazil has condemned the Russian invasion at the UN but has not adopted economic sanctions against Moscow or sent munitions to Kiev.

The Brazilian president finally invited Joe Biden to visit Brazil, an invitation accepted by the American president, specifies their joint press release.

Brazilian President Lula visits the United States with Joe Biden

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com February 10, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

With our correspondent in Washington, Guillaume Naudin

It was January 9th. After the attack supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro against the Parliament in Brasília, Joe Biden called his counterpart Lula to assure him of his solidarity and invite him to Washington.

A month later, Lula arrives. This is the main message of this visit: solidarity between democracies which have known the same type of threats and events.

Beyond this strong symbol, and this shared political message, the two men will also discuss environmental concerns. Lula decided to fight against deforestation by Amazon and against wild gold panning. He is looking for support and hopes to find it from Joe Biden.

This does not prevent some divergences on non-negligible subjects. On the war in Ukraine, Brazil is a supporter of dialogue and refused to send ammunition to kyiv. The United States is also worried about the growing influence of China, now Brazil’s leading partner. Lula will travel to Beijing next month.

Finally, the elephant in the room is called Jair Bolsonaro. Concerned by the investigation into the attack on Brasília, the former far-right president is in the United States. He even applied for a visa to stay longer.

This is Lula’s first official trip outside Latin America since taking office on January 1. The Brazilian president is already there, he arrived Thursday evening in Washington.

After two years of icy relations between former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro and the White House, this trip is an opportunity for Brazil to put itself back on the international scene.

But the objective is also to revive the relationship between the two countries. The fight against the radicalization of the far right is one of the subjects on which the two leaders agree.

The question of the defense of democracy, and then the environmental question, I really think that these are the two subjects of consensus that will be put forward during this visit by Lula to Washington. Afterwards, there is also a subject that is much more tense, which is that of the war in Ukraine, since President Lula intends to present Biden with his “peace club”…
