The Cinema Series continues at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center with screenings of โThe Phoenician Scheme,โ starring Benicio Del Toro, on Saturday, July 12, and Tuesday, July 15, at 7:30 p.m. The Tuesday night screening will be shown with captions visible on the screen.
In Wes Andersonโs hilarious and star-studded new film, wealthy businessman Zsa-zsa Korda (Del Toro) appoints his only daughter, a nun, as sole heir to his estate. As Korda embarks on a new enterprise, the two soon become the target of scheming tycoons, foreign terrorists, and determined assassins. The film also features Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray, and Bryan Cranston.
The Austin Chronicle calls the film โa lovely lark, a spirits lifter.โ Paste Magazine calls it โa film thatโs filled with so many wonderful moments that itโs a joy to behold.โ Consequence calls it โa colorful, enjoyable yarn by one of the best cinematic confectioners around. One with some real heart to it.โ The Independent (UK) says โeach scene contains something to savour โ a goofy visual gag, some deadpan dialogue or the use of a surprising prop.โ Rated PG-13 for nude images, bloody images, smoking throughout, some sexual material, and violent content, โThe Phoenician Schemeโ runs one hour, 41 minutes.
Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member. The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank.
