Colombia Suspends Intelligence Sharing with US, Fueling Drug Traffickers

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com November 13, 2025
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Colombia‘s Suspension from Egmont Group⁤ Threatens ‍Anti-Narcotics Efforts, benefitting Drug Traffickers

BOGOTA – The suspension of Colombia⁢ from the Egmont Group, a global network for sharing ⁤financial intelligence related to money laundering and transnational crime, is creating a security vacuum that experts say will disproportionately benefit drug traffickers. The suspension follows ‌Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s disclosure of confidential⁢ details ⁣regarding ⁢a purchase of Pegasus ⁤spyware allegedly made by the previous administration.

The fallout extends beyond‌ the loss of data sharing; Colombia is now at risk of losing crucial U.S. aid that funds a significant portion of its intelligence operations. “The united States loses an ally of 40 years that produces a‍ lot of intelligence, but the consequences for Colombia are really disastrous, ⁣because⁢ we are going to be left without resources‍ for the fight against narcotics,” warned a vice⁤ admiral familiar with the situation.

A former Colombian intelligence official, ‌speaking anonymously, emphasized the country’s reliance on U.S.technology. “North American intelligence agencies have always‍ been leaders in cutting-edge ‌technology, such as satellites or communications interception, much ‍more than in human ⁤intelligence,” the official stated.‍ Colombia, ‍lacking the budget and technical capacity to independently develop such technology, has historically depended on⁣ U.S. support to track drug movements – by air ‍and sea – and monitor threats from groups like⁢ the former FARC guerrilla. “But these technologies become obsolete quickly, so you have to⁢ constantly modernize them, and that is only possible if you maintain good synchronization with the United States.”

Cooperation between the‌ two countries grew significantly in the ‌1990s, enabling ⁢Colombia to access vital intelligence as an‍ intermediary nation. However, relations have deteriorated under the administrations of Donald Trump and Gustavo Petro. Trump has accused Petro of being “a member‍ of drug trafficking” and⁤ recently decertified Colombia’s efforts in the war‍ on drugs. Petro‌ has‌ responded by ending intelligence cooperation with the U.S.

The breakdown in collaboration means both countries will lose access to ⁤accumulated intelligence regarding drug trafficking networks and routes, creating an habitat where‌ criminal organizations are poised to⁣ thrive. “The⁢ two governments will ultimately lose the information they had been building about the powers and routes of drug trafficking. And‍ in ⁤that⁣ ignorance, those ‍who win are only the drug traffickers,” the ⁢article concludes.

SAN FRANCISCO – Spreedly, a leading payments orchestration platform, ‍has expanded its⁣ capabilities in brazil through ⁤an enhanced partnership with EBANX, a global payments platform focused on emerging markets. The integration now provides Spreedly customers with access to nearly 100% of payment methods used in Brazilian eCommerce, including Pix, Boleto Bancário, and a⁤ wide ⁣range of e-wallets.

Top G7 Diplomats Gather in Canada as Trump Trade Threats Loom

CAP-AUX-MEULES, Quebec – Foreign ‍ministers from the ⁣Group of Seven ‌(G7) nations convened in‍ Quebec today amid renewed trade tensions sparked by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent proposals for tariffs. The meeting comes as Canada seeks to navigate a complex relationship with the United States, balancing economic concerns‍ with shared security interests.

The gathering takes place as Trump has publicly floated ‍the idea of imposing 10% tariffs on all goods from countries that don’t⁢ meet his standards for military spending ‍and fair trade practices, directly targeting key G7 allies. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney recently apologized for a canadian advertisement critical of Trump’s ⁢trade policies and indicated a willingness to restart ⁢trade negotiations when the U.S. is prepared.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand⁢ is leveraging the‌ G7 meeting to ⁤address a broad range of issues beyond trade,⁤ emphasizing the importance of maintaining a multifaceted relationship with the U.S. During a ⁤recent breakfast meeting in Washington, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL)⁢ requested Anand’s ‍assistance in securing⁤ international support for Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan and ⁣ensuring the success of a future gaza reconstruction conference.

U.S. officials have stated rubio’s⁢ agenda at the G7 meeting will also focus on initiatives to‍ end conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, bolster maritime‌ security, address crises in⁤ Haiti and Sudan, and ‍strengthen supply chain resilience, particularly regarding critical minerals. Canada’s priorities align with several of these, including ending the war in Ukraine, enhancing⁢ Arctic security, and stabilizing Haiti.

A working lunch is scheduled to ⁣discuss energy and critical ‍minerals – resources vital for industries ranging from smartphones to defense – with Canada possessing 34 minerals and metals of particular interest to the Pentagon for national security purposes. Anand underscored the need for continued dialog, stating, “Every complex ⁤relationship has numerous touch points…ther is continued work to be done – ⁢just as there is work to be done on the numerous touch points outside the trade file.”

Title: Dominican Republic Hit by Major Blackout – Power Restoration Underway

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 12, 2025

dominican Republic Plunged into Widespread Blackout, Restoration Efforts Underway

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – A massive power outage has paralyzed much‌ of the Dominican Republic, impacting⁤ the nation’s nearly 11 million ⁣residents and disrupting essential services. The blackout began Tuesday, leaving ⁢homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure without electricity.

The cause of the outage remains⁣ under inquiry, but ⁤officials have identified a failure ⁢in the⁤ country’s ⁣transmission ⁢system as the ‍initial ‍trigger. Generation ⁢units in San Pedro de Macorís and the Quisqueya Power ⁤Plant went offline, initiating⁢ a cascade of failures across other power ‍plants and transmission lines, according to the Dominican Electricity Transmission ⁣Company. The Dominican Republic relies heavily on oil and its products for energy, followed by coal, natural gas, and ⁤smaller contributions from solar,⁢ wind, ‍and hydroelectric sources.

As of Tuesday night, approximately 15% of the power system had been restored, according to Energy Minister Joel Santos.”We’ll restore power little by little,” Santos stated, prioritizing sectors like transportation and healthcare. Authorities are‍ working to determine ‌the root ⁢cause of the failure, acknowledging⁣ the complexity of the electrical system and the⁢ need for a thorough analysis.

The blackout has‌ caused critically important disruption in the capital, Santo Domingo. Mass transit systems, including the metro and aerial cable cars, were‍ halted, forcing commuters to find alternative routes. Some passengers evacuated from⁤ the metro and walked through tunnels. Hospitals and banks are operating on generator power, ⁣but many homes and small businesses remain without electricity.

“Traffic is already chaos in eastern ‌Santo Domingo,” ⁣said Tomás Ozuna, 37, an IT⁣ worker heading to his shift.lissa Fernández, 26, expressed concern about ⁤her‍ commute home from work, noting the metro’s suspension. Leonel Encarnación, a barbershop owner, reported a loss of customers as air conditioning failed.

COP30 Climate Summit: Leaders Urge Global Action in Brazil

COP30 Underway in brazil: Global Leaders Urge‍ Unified Action ‍on Climate Change

Belém,Brazil – The‌ 30th‌ annual United Nations climate change conference (COP30) commenced today in ⁢Belém,Brazil, with world leaders emphasizing the urgent‍ need⁣ for international cooperation to combat global warming. The 12-day event,‍ held at the edge of the Amazon rainforest, is expected⁢ to draw approximately 50,000 participants from over 190 countries.

UN Climate Chief Simon Stiell addressed delegates Monday, stating, “In this arena of ‌COP30, your job here ⁤is not to fight one another – your job here is ⁣to fight this climate crisis, together.” He ⁤acknowledged progress made through previous climate talks but stressed the necessity for considerably accelerated action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, declaring,”Lamenting ⁤is not a strategy. We need solutions.”

A recent UN⁤ analysis of national climate plans reveals current pledges fall short of the reductions required by ⁤2035‍ to limit global temperature increases to 1.5C (2.7F) above⁤ pre-industrial levels – a threshold experts warn,if breached, will lead to far more severe ⁣climate impacts.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva underscored the present-day reality of climate change, stating,”Climate change is⁢ no longer a threat of the future. It‌ is⁤ a tragedy of the present.” He also condemned efforts to undermine ⁣climate action, ‍criticizing attacks on science ⁣adn ‍institutions.

Notably, the United States is not sending a delegation to COP30,⁢ reflecting President Donald Trump’s stance against climate initiatives. Former US Special Envoy for Climate⁣ Todd Stern commented, “It’s ⁣a good thing that they are not sending anyone.⁤ It wasn’t going to be constructive⁤ if they‍ did.” COP30 ⁤President Andre Correa do Lago suggested the US absence “has opened some space for the ‌world to see what developing countries are doing.”

Indigenous ⁣voices are also prominent at the conference. Pablo Inuma Flores, an Indigenous leader from Peru, called for concrete⁢ action beyond ⁢pledges, stating, “we want to make sure that they don’t keep promising, that they will start protecting, because we as ⁣Indigenous peopel are the ones who suffer from these impacts of climate change.”

A letter published Monday from dozens⁢ of scientists highlighted the accelerating destabilization of the planet’s⁣ cryosphere⁤ – glaciers, ice sheets, and other frozen regions ⁢- warning that “geopolitical tensions or short-term national interests must not overshadow COP30. Climate change is the ⁣defining security and stability challenge of our time.”

Measles-Free Status Lost: Americas Face Outbreak Crisis

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor November 11, 2025

Measles Resurgence Threatens Americas: Mexico Faces Outbreak Challenges

The Americas⁢ are grappling with ⁣a resurgence of measles, having lost their measles-free status, ⁤and Mexico is currently facing a significant outbreak. As of recently, there are ⁢5,185⁢ confirmed measles cases in mexico, with the number of possible unconfirmed infections estimated to be⁢ more than double that figure. Two recent deaths have ⁤been‍ reported in Sonora⁤ and Durango, the latter marking the first death reported in that state in approximately a month.

The Pan American Health Institution (PAHO) has acknowledged mexicos efforts to⁣ contain the outbreak, but cautioned⁢ against delaying further‍ vaccination⁢ initiatives. PAHO warns that waiting ⁣for the planned follow-up campaign in April 2026 is insufficient, as ⁣current immunization rates⁣ remain⁣ below⁢ the necessary 95% threshold for herd immunity. Measles is considered the world’s most contagious disease, with each case potentially leading to up to 18 additional ⁢infections.

The outbreak initially surfaced in Chihuahua and Oaxaca. ⁣While Oaxaca quickly contained its small outbreak,Chihuahua ‍continues to struggle with a rapidly ⁤escalating ⁣situation. This is attributed to ⁤a ⁤combination of factors: the larger scale of the outbreak in the ‌north, vaccine hesitancy within some Mennonite communities, and the ⁢challenging terrain⁣ which hinders access for healthcare professionals, especially in ⁣mountainous regions.

A key driver of the spread in Chihuahua is the movement of day laborers who travel from mountainous areas⁤ to work in⁤ Mennonite fields, exposing them to the virus. Seasonal work patterns contribute to the disease’s spread, as individuals ‍move between⁣ territories,‌ introducing measles to previously unaffected states. In ⁣response, the Mexican government extended the eligible vaccination age in July to 49 years, expanding beyond the traditionally recommended under-40 age group, specifically to protect these vulnerable migrant ⁤workers.

PAHO is urging Mexico to prioritize vaccine distribution to states in need and focus on reaching seasonal workers. A PAHO support mission is scheduled to travel to Chihuahua this week to ⁤assist with professional ⁢training, laboratory surveillance, and improving ⁣vaccine access – a critical challenge. Jarbas Barbosa of PAHO emphasized the importance of readily available vaccines, including⁤ weekend⁤ access, to overcome barriers related to informality.

Furthermore,⁣ PAHO stresses the need for healthcare ⁢personnel to communicate the benefits of vaccination in clear, accessible language, addressing lingering ‌doubts fueled by anti-vaccine rhetoric that has gained traction⁢ in recent years. PAHO data highlights the significant‍ impact of measles immunization, noting that it prevented 60 million deaths globally between 2000 and 2023, ‍including 6 million⁤ in the Americas.
