A charter bus crash on the New york State Thruway near Batavia, New York, on⁣ Friday resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. The bus, operated⁣ by M&Y Tour, overturned, scattering debris and passengers’ belongings across the highway, prompting a lengthy closure of the roadway.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Management (FMCSA),M&Y Tour has a “satisfactory” safety⁢ rating and has not ⁤been involved‍ in any reported ‌accidents resulting in fatalities over the past two years. The FMCSA conducted⁤ 60 inspections of the company’s buses and drivers during that period.

Initial reports indicate that many passengers on the ⁣bus were not ‍wearing seat belts at ⁣the time of the crash. Trooper James O’Callaghan‍ stated at a news conference that this appeared ⁣to be the case.

New York State law, enacted ⁣in response to a 2023 bus‍ crash, now⁤ mandates seat belt use on charter buses ⁤manufactured on or ⁢after November 28, 2016. The age of the bus involved in Friday’s incident has not ⁢yet⁤ been determined.

The New⁢ York⁢ State Thruway Authority closed ⁣a meaningful section of ⁤the Thruway in both directions following the crash,⁢ advising drivers ‍to avoid the area. Westbound lanes were later reopened.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene.Powell Stephens,a driver who passed by the wreckage near Medina,New York, told WHAM-TV,”It ‌was certainly heartbreaking to ‍see. There⁤ was ‌a lot of people embracing each other. It looked‌ like ⁤people were breaking ⁢down.”

New⁢ York ‌Governor Kathy Hochul addressed the accident in a post on X (formerly ‍Twitter), calling it a tragedy. She confirmed she had been briefed on the situation‍ and that her office was coordinating with law enforcement and local⁣ authorities. “Our hearts are with ⁣their ‍loved ones during‌ this challenging time,” hochul stated regarding the victims.

Context: Bus Safety Regulations and Recent‍ Incidents

The incident raises renewed questions about bus ⁣safety regulations and enforcement, especially concerning seat ⁣belt usage. ⁣While federal regulations require seat belts⁣ on all new motorcoaches, older buses⁤ are exempt. The 2023 New York law aimed to address this‍ gap by requiring seat belts on newer charter buses operating‌ within the ‌state. The FMCSA’s safety rating system assesses motor carriers based ‌on factors including driver qualifications, vehicle maintenance, and crash history. A “satisfactory”⁤ rating, while not indicating a perfect record, suggests the carrier meets ⁤minimum safety standards.
