Starmer Meets Abbas: UK Pushes for Gaza Resolution

Starmer Meets with Palestinian president⁢ Abbas‍ Amidst Rising UK-Israel Tensions

LONDON – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Palestinian President Mahmoud⁢ Abbas in London on Sunday evening, as part of ongoing efforts to find a ⁣political solution to the conflict in Gaza, according to the Prime Minister’s office.Abbas, 88, is on a‍ three-day visit to the UK, seeking to garner support for ending “aggression, destruction and starvation of the Palestinian people.”

The meeting comes as the UK considers formally ⁤recognizing⁤ a Palestinian state. Starmer announced in July that the United Kingdom ⁣will acknowledge the existence⁢ of the Palestine State at the UN General Assembly in September if the⁤ Israeli government⁤ does not ⁢take significant steps to improve the situation in Gaza and establish a⁢ ceasefire. London will evaluate progress made by both sides in the coming days to ‌determine its final⁤ decision.

Alongside diplomatic efforts, Starmer has demanded Hamas immediately release‌ all hostages, agree to a‌ ceasefire, disarm, and commit to not participating in⁣ any future Gaza government.

The UK’s relationship with Israel has become increasingly strained due to the ongoing conflict. London recently suspended some arms exports to Israel and has excluded‌ Israeli leaders⁣ from the largest British arms show beginning Tuesday.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog is expected to arrive in‌ the UK ‌on Tuesday for an official visit, but⁣ it remains unclear whether he will‍ meet with Starmer.

Shabana Mahmood: New UK Home Secretary, Immigration, Kashmir & Palestine

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 8, 2025

UK’s new Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood Navigates Complex Stance on Israel-Gaza Conflict, Palestine⁣ Activism

London – Shabana Mahmood, recently appointed as the UK’s first Pakistani-origin Home secretary, is facing scrutiny over her past statements and actions regarding the Israeli-palestinian conflict and activism‍ related to Palestine, as ⁢she prepares to take a firm stance against groups deemed extremist. While a long-time supporter‍ of the Palestinian cause, Mahmood has also condemned Hamas’s actions and expressed support for Israel’s right to self-determination, creating a nuanced picture as she⁣ steps into the high-profile role.

Mahmood’s support‍ for Palestine is well-documented. ⁢She has been ⁣seen at Palestine⁢ Solidarity Campaign rallies holding “free Palestine” placards, and in 2014,she led a⁣ protest at a ‍Birmingham Sainsbury’s branch demanding the supermarket cease selling goods from Israeli settlements in Palestinian territory.

However, Mahmood has also demonstrated a willingness to distance herself from actions she views as detrimental to the pursuit of peace. She unequivocally condemned Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, stating in a letter to constituents: “I unequivocally condemn the despicable actions of Hamas, who targeted innocent Israeli civilians. The hostages must be returned.” She further added that the attacks⁢ “set back the just cause of ⁢Palestinian freedom⁤ and ‌statehood, which I have supported my‌ whole life.”

In a february 2024 interview with BBC Radio 4,Mahmood argued against⁣ a one-state solution, stating,”A one-state solution does not make the ‌people of Israel ⁢safe,it actually condemns them to⁣ insecurity and concerns for their safety in perpetuity, and it is an outrage⁢ to adopt a position ‍that says the people of Israel can have self-determination but the people of Palestine cannot.”

Despite her advocacy for Palestinian rights, Mahmood has abstained from several⁢ key parliamentary votes concerning Israel⁤ and gaza, including a November 2023 Scottish National⁣ Party call for a “Ceasefire in Occupied Gaza” Amendment.

As Home Secretary, Mahmood is expected to maintain a firm line‌ against⁣ Palestine Action, a UK-designated terrorist organisation. Defense Secretary John Healey told Sky⁢ News that he anticipates Mahmood will “defend the decision the Government’s taken on Palestine Action, as of what some of its members ‌are responsible for and were planning.” Healey emphasized the importance of consistent law enforcement, stating, “If we want to avoid a two-tier policing and justice system in this contry, when people break the law, there have to be consequences.”

The⁣ government’s ‍decision⁢ to ban ⁢Palestine action sparked protests in London, resulting in over 800 arrests.

Mahmood’s appointment marks a significant moment for depiction⁢ within the UK government. Her handling of these sensitive issues will be closely watched, both domestically and internationally, as she balances her long-held beliefs with the responsibilities of her new office.

Cross-party politicians urges Starmer to prioritise audit watchdog reform

Cross-Party MPs Demand Starmer Prioritize⁤ audit Reform Legislation

LONDON – A group⁢ of prominent MPs from across‍ the political spectrum have written to Labor leader Keir Starmer urging him to prioritize the passage of long-delayed audit reform legislation. The letter, signed by‌ LabourS Clive Betts,Conservatives’ Sir ‍Geoffrey⁤ Clifton-Brown,Liberal Democrat Daisy Cooper, and Green Siân Berry, highlights a continued lack of adequate market oversight following a series of high-profile corporate failures.

The MPs’ call comes over seven years after the collapse‌ of Carillion, despite multiple reviews,a government White Paper, and extensive public consultation. They argue⁤ that failures in audit and governance continue to plague ⁢the UK economy, citing the collapses of patisserie Valerie, Bulb, Thomas Cook, Wilko, and ISG as evidence of ongoing⁣ weaknesses.

“It is deeply⁢ concerning that over seven years have passed since the collapse of Carillion, yet no legislation has been brought forward,” the letter stated. ‍”Meanwhile,⁣ we have witnessed further high-profile corporate failures linked to weaknesses in audit and governance…making it clear that market oversight remains far from‍ adequate.”

The politicians emphasized the devastating consequences ⁤of corporate collapses,⁢ impacting jobs, pensions, and smaller businesses within supply chains,‍ warning that such failures are “the⁤ polar opposite of economic⁣ growth.” They reminded Starmer that the Audit⁣ Reform and Corporate ⁤Governance Bill “enjoys strong cross-party support” and urged the‌ government to “act now” and prioritize its passage through Parliament.

This push for reform arrives amidst‌ a reshuffle of Starmer’s top team following Angela Rayner’s resignation last week over a tax scandal, and ⁣the subsequent sacking of a batch of ministers⁤ on Friday.
