stoke-on-Trent, england โ – A young woman is sharing her story of earlyโ menopause triggered by cancer treatment, โขhoping to break the stigma surrounding the condition โandโ empower others facing similarโ challenges. Ellie, now a medical student, experienced what she initially dismissed as โฃan “embarrassing” โคsymptom before receiving aโ devastating diagnosis that ultimately ledโ to early menopause.
Ellie began experiencing irregular periods at age 13, a symptom she initially โคhesitatedโค to โฃdiscuss with anyone. After seeking medical attention, she was diagnosed with cancer โand underwent treatment thatโ induced early menopause. She describes aโฃ period of grappling with physical โขchanges and emotional distress, compounded by a lack of open conversation about โคthe condition. โฃ”I was just like, ‘Oh,โ this is embarrassing, I don’t want to talk about it,’ and then I was thrown into the deep end with, ‘Right, you need to โฃchange yoru patches and take hormones and all โคthis and that.'”
Since September 2021, Ellie has been studying Medicine at Keele University, with plans to qualify as a doctor in August 2026. she intends to specialize in oncology, driven by a desire to useโ her personal experience to support others navigating cancer and its side effects.
“For me, it’s just โฃall about acceptance – accepting my situation, making sure I don’t bottle it up, โฃtalkโค to people about it,” Ellie explained. “thenโ by doing stuff likeโค this, raisingโค awareness, โคit makes me feel like there’s a positive out of a bad situation. A bitโ of a silver lining.”
She emphasizes the importance of self-advocacy and knowledge. “I alwaysโค sayโฃ to people that are going throughโข a similar situation to โคme: Empower yourself with knowledge.Read everythingโฃ that you โcan about early menopause, listenโ to podcasts, watch โขdocumentaries, as you areโ yourโ own best advocateโฆ By having that โknowledge, you can get access to the treatmentโข that you need and the support that โขyou need. I wish that, all thoseโ years ago, I knew a bit more.”
Ellie โคhighlights that early menopause remainsโ a tabooโ topic, frequently enough โฃshrouded in shame.โ
