Lost his job and turned to the flea market to make ends meet

Almost two years have passed since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine. As the Russian military continues to attack, how are Ukrainian citizens facing the war?

Shoes, clothing, flashlights, toys, picture books, stuffed animals, various tools… There are so many items lined up that make you wonder who would buy something like this.

This is a flea market in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region, eastern Ukraine. It is held six days a week on the sidewalk in front of an apartment complex. To help make ends meet, I find items from my home or friends’ homes that I can sell and display them on the street.

Flea markets are stocked with items that are no longer needed at home, but some people also bring items purchased from specialized second-hand wholesalers (photographed by the author).

Many of the people running the shops were elderly people living on pensions, but some had lost their jobs due to the war. Najerna, who had been arranging the girls’ coats, jackets, and tableware such as plates and cups, lost his job as an assistant teacher at a kindergarten.

“Most of the kindergarteners left town to evacuate, so I lost my job. My husband was also laid off by his company, so we’re here struggling to make ends meet, but there are days when we can’t sell at all.” (Najerna) Mr. Miss)

China’s Diplomatic Push: Inclusion of Developing Countries through the United Nations and Other Forums

China is trying to include developing countries through the United Nations and other forums

(British Economist magazine January 27, 2024 issue)

Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart (Republican, left) and Rep. Ami Berra (Democratic Party, right), co-chairs of the U.S. pro-Taiwan parliamentary group, visit Taiwan and meet with President Tsai Ing-wen (center) (January 25, Taiwan) (From the Government-General’s Office website)

It is also possible that China will receive more powerful legal cover for its invasion.

Even with the arrival of the new year, tensions surrounding Taiwan have not eased at all.

In the January 13 election, independence-minded Lai Qingde was elected as the next president, infuriating China. Two days later, China took action, announcing that the South Pacific island nation of Nauru would sever diplomatic relations with Taiwan and restore diplomatic relations with China.

On January 24, the US Navy sent a warship through the Taiwan Strait, which China described as a “provocation.”

As these dramas continue, new battles are raging in the diplomatic arena, and there are fears that the path to war may open.

Only 11 countries recognize Taiwan as a nation.

For more than 70 years, the Chinese government, led by the Communist Party, has struggled for official recognition from the world. Recently, a new front was opened as part of this effort.

The Communist Party not only wants to be the sole representative of China, but also wants other countries to accept the view that Taiwan is an inalienable territory of China.

A victory on this front would give China’s leaders not only a legal basis to invade Taiwan, but also a major diplomatic cudgel.

With this change in policy, Nauru becomes the 183rd country to officially recognize China as a state. The number of countries that recognized it was about 160 20 years ago, and 80 to 90 30 years before that (the number of countries itself was smaller then than it is now).

Most major powers have made the switch some time ago.

Many Western countries, including Britain, established diplomatic relations with China in the early 1970s. The United States normalized diplomatic relations a little later in 1979.

Since then, China has consistently won approvals. Only 11 countries (plus the Vatican) now continue to formally recognize Taiwan.

Democrats and Immigration Policy: The Battle for Border Control and Re-Election

Democrats and Immigration Policy: The Battle for Border Control and Re-Election

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 28, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The fate of a “nation of immigrants” and border control policies are being questioned by the Democratic Party

(British Economist magazine January 27, 2024 issue)

Immigration policy proposals are essential for a Democratic administration

To stop Trump from coming back, Democrats need to come up with immigration policy proposals.

Donald Trump’s mother is from the small village of Tongue (population 500) in northern Scotland, which was once a Viking territory.

My grandfather was from the village of Kallstadt (population 1,200) in Bavaria, Germany, where the Heinz family, known for ketchup, was born.

Joe Biden’s ancestors came to the United States from Ireland and England.

Everyone in this country is from a different place. Even Native Americans came from outside, although they had lived there much longer.

The appeal of the United States is enormous, and there are 160 million adults around the world who would move there if given the chance.

This number is tens of millions more than most Americans would consider acceptable.

The biggest hurdle to Biden’s re-election

This mismatch is at the heart of the problem that threatens to hinder President Biden’s re-election.

In 2016, Trump took advantage of the “border turmoil” to win the Republican presidential nomination and ultimately the presidency.

At the time, he preached as if record numbers of illegal immigrants were crossing the border. It wasn’t a valid point at the time, but it’s true now.

Nearly 250,000 people attempted to cross the U.S. southern border in November alone. Most new arrivals apply for asylum. He will then be released on bail in the United States and will have to wait several years for the outcome of his application to be released.

More than 3.1 million people have been allowed to cross the border since Biden took office. That’s more than the population of Chicago.

At least 1.7 million other people overstay their country, either by entering the country without being detected by authorities or by overstaying their visas.

Republican governors have funneled these immigrants into states run by Democratic governors, pushing problems on the southern border north.

This is partly why Republicans are more trusted than Democrats when it comes to border security, a 30-point difference.

And this is the issue where Republicans have the biggest lead over Democrats.

New Axis of Evil: Russia, North Korea, and Iran Form, Shifting International Order

A new axis of evil called “Russia, North Korea, and Iran” forms, and the international order changes completely.

Wars continue in Ukraine and Gaza, with no sign of a ceasefire anytime soon. Meanwhile, in Taiwan’s presidential election, Democratic Progressive Party candidate Lai Ching-toku was elected, which is seen as increasing the possibility of a Taiwan emergency.

North Korea approaches Russia

On January 17, President Putin met with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui in Moscow. It is unusual for Putin to meet with a foreign minister of a foreign country who is visiting Russia, and the hospitality was outstanding.

Foreign Minister Choi had previously met with Foreign Minister Lavrov, and together with Lavrov, he reported the contents to Putin. Foreign Minister Choi also reportedly conveyed Kim Jong Un’s intention to invite Putin to visit North Korea. It also appears that there was discussion about increasing exchanges in fields such as the military, economy, and culture.

Last September, Kim Jong Un visited the cosmodrome in Vostochny, Amur Oblast, and held a summit meeting with Putin. In exchange for the supply of shells, it appears that they received Russia’s latest military technology. In particular, the launch of military reconnaissance satellites failed in May and August, and it seems that they were advised on measures to improve the situation. Thanks to this, North Korea successfully launched a missile on November 21st.

It has been revealed that Russia used not only North Korean-made artillery shells but also ballistic missiles in Ukraine. As the war drags on, North Korea’s role as a munitions factory for Russia is likely to grow.

The Impending Chinese Invasion: Gideon Luckman Analyzes the Obstacles

Obstacles to Chinese invasion remain enormous: Gideon Luckman

(Financial Times, January 16, 2024)

Did they confirm their similarities? (China-Russia top leaders meeting in Moscow, March 21, 2023, Photo: Reuters/Afro)

Chinese President Xi Jinping believes that history is moving in his direction. During his visit to Moscow last March, he told Russian President Vladimir Putin:

“Right now, we are witnessing changes not seen in 100 years, and we are leading this change together.”

This exchange was spread all over the world.

Xi’s words were taken as a clear endorsement of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and as a sign that China will soon play a role in “leading this change.”

The implications were frightening for Taiwan, given China’s longstanding threats to invade the island.

After last weekend’s presidential election in Taiwan, these threats of invasion inevitably returned to the global agenda.

Ahead of Tuesday’s vote, the Chinese Communist Party warned Taiwanese voters to make the “right choice” between peace and war.

But in Beijing’s view, Taiwan made the “wrong” choice in choosing Lai Ching-de, a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), who China considers a dangerous separatist, to be its next president.

Similarities between present-day Taiwan and Ukraine 22 years ago

There are some clear parallels between Taiwan’s precarious position and that of Ukraine before 2022.

The first is that Putin and Xi respectively view Ukraine and Taiwan as territories that originally belong to their countries.

Putin’s words recognizing an independent Ukraine were disingenuous. Furthermore, the effort to “reunify” Taiwan with the mainland is a longstanding Chinese policy.

The second connection is that both Putin and Xi argue that Ukraine and Taiwan lack true autonomy and are being used as tools of a hegemonic and aggressive US.

Therefore, regaining Ukraine and Taiwan for the motherland serves two purposes.

First, it will fulfill the historical destiny of Russia and China.

And if the invasion is successful, it could deal a severe blow to American global hegemony in two major arenas: Europe and Asia.

Therefore, changes that have not been seen in 100 years will occur.

“Maternity hospital, residential area attacked, dozens killed, hundreds injured”

[LONDON]John Kirby, Strategic and Public Affairs Coordinator for the U.S. National Security Council (NSC), said this at a press conference on January 4.

“For five days over the New Year holidays, Russia conducted repeated airstrikes on Ukraine, using drones and missiles to attack cities and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine. Maternity hospitals, shopping malls and residential areas were attacked, and several Ten people were killed and hundreds injured.”

According to the Facebook page of the Ukrainian Air Force Command, the following Russian airstrikes were carried out during the New Year holidays: The five-day period Kirby refers to appears to refer to the attack from December 29th to January 2nd. The Russian military employs a strategy that uses a large number of drones and a wide variety of missiles to defeat the Ukrainian military’s air defense system.

On December 29, 36 Iranian-made kamikaze drones Shahed 136/131, at least 90 air-to-ground missiles Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55, and eight long-range air-to-surface missiles were launched. Ship missile Kh-22 / supersonic air-launched cruise missile Kh-32, 14 long-range surface-to-air missile systems S-300 / S-400 / short-range ballistic missile “Iskander”, pole capable of carrying 5 nuclear warheads The supersonic air-to-ground missile Kinzhal, four air-to-ship/anti-radar missiles Kh-31, and one air-to-surface/air-to-ship missile Kh-59 were fired, of which 27 were shot down. There were only Shahed 136/131 and 87 Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55s.

On 30 December, ten Shahed 136/131s were used in an attack, shooting down five aircraft.

On 31 December, 49 Shahed 136/131s and six S-300s were fired, destroying 21 of them Shahed 136/131s.

On January 1st, 87 of 90 Shahed 136/131 were destroyed. Four S-300s, three Kh-31s and one Kh-59 hit. Apart from this, nine Shahed 136/131s and one Kh-59 were shot down.

On January 2nd, 35 Shahed 136/131s were destroyed. 70 Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55 were fired, 59 of which were shot down. 10 Kinjal and 3 Crab cruise missiles were shot down. Twelve Iskanders and four Kh-31s will also be used in the attack.

On January 4, two Shahed 136/131 were shot down.

On January 5, 29 Shahed 136/131s attacked and shot down 21 aircraft.
