Palestine Recognition: Which Countries Now Support a State?

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 23, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Over 150 Nations Now Recognize State⁣ of Palestine, Despite Israeli Opposition

JERUSALEM/UNITED NATIONS – As⁤ of September 2025, ‌more than 150 countries worldwide have ‌formally⁣ recognized the State of Palestine,⁣ a⁢ move increasingly met with condemnation from Israeli officials who argue such recognition “rewards terrorism.”‌ The recent ⁤wave of recognitions, including a recent acknowledgement by the UK, has sparked a strong reaction from Israeli ⁣Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who stated a Palestinian state “will not happen” and labelled recognition a “prize” for⁤ Hamas.

“I ⁤have a clear message to those leaders who are recognizing a Palestinian state after the horrendous October 7 massacre: You are rewarding terror with an enormous prize,” Netanyahu‌ said⁤ in⁢ a statement posted to X (formerly Twitter) ‌on⁤ September 21, 2025.

The growing ‌international recognition stands ⁤in contrast to obstacles at the United Nations, where the⁤ United States has ⁣repeatedly vetoed ‍resolutions ‍seeking⁣ full Palestinian⁣ membership.

A History of Recognition & UN Hurdles

The initial declarations of Palestinian statehood date back ‌to⁣ November 15,1988,when⁤ Yasser Arafat, chairman of the Palestine Liberation Association (PLO),proclaimed the establishment of‍ an autonomous State of‍ Palestine⁣ with Jerusalem as its capital. Following this declaration, over 80 countries, primarily from the Global South -‌ encompassing nations in Africa, Asia, Latin America, ‍and the Arab ⁢world – extended recognition. A number of European states within the former‌ Soviet bloc also recognized Palestine at that time.

the 1993 Oslo Accords represented the first ⁤direct negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis, outlining a vision for a two-state solution. However, this outcome has yet to ‌be realized.

In 2012, ‍the ⁤United Nations ⁣General Assembly (UNGA) overwhelmingly voted to upgrade ⁤Palestine’s status to a “non-member observer ⁢state,” with 138 votes in favour, 9 against, and 41 abstentions. This status allows Palestine to participate in UN meetings and ‌debates, but does not grant voting rights on resolutions.

Despite broad international support, the United States, one of the five permanent members of the⁣ UN Security Council‌ (UNSC) – alongside Russia, China, France, and the UK – vetoed a resolution on April 18, 2024, that would have granted Palestine full UN membership. The US holds‌ veto power, a privilege granted to ⁤the major victors of World War II in 1945, allowing it to block resolutions nonetheless of wider⁣ international backing.

The US has a long-standing record of vetoing UNSC resolutions critical⁣ of⁤ Israel, having done so at least 50 times since joining the UN, often preventing measures addressing Israeli military actions,⁤ illegal settlements, or the occupation of Palestinian land‌ from being adopted.

UN Reaffirms Palestinian Statehood Right Amid Gaza War and Western Recognition

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 23, 2025

UN Reaffirms Palestinian Statehood as Right, Not Reward, Amid Gaza Conflict

UNITED NATIONS – The ⁣United Nations has asserted that the ⁤recognition of a‌ Palestinian state‍ is a right, not a‌ reward‍ for‌ acts of terror, reiterating its commitment to a two-state solution even as Israel‘s⁤ war in ⁤Gaza continues. The statement comes following decisions by the⁢ United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada to recognize‍ Palestinian statehood.

UN officials emphasized that⁢ the pursuit of‍ a Palestinian state is consistent with international law and relevant UN ⁤resolutions. This position directly counters Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s condemnation of the recognition, which ⁤he characterized as “handing a huge reward⁤ to terror.”

“It will not happen. A‍ Palestinian state will not be established ⁣west of the Jordan,” Netanyahu stated in a video statement, ⁣as reported by The Times of Israel. He further indicated Israel’s response to‌ these recognitions will come ⁤after his visit ‌to the‍ United ⁤States next week.

The Israeli Foreign⁤ Ministry echoed Netanyahu’s stance, stating that statehood “must remain a ⁤final status issue and not be disconnected‍ from peace,” and that the Palestinian Authority has not adequately addressed incitement, terrorist ‌rewards, or counter-terrorism efforts. The ministry described the Palestinian Authority as “part ‌of the problem⁢ and not part of the solution.”

Netanyahu also highlighted Israel’s continued expansion ‍of⁢ Jewish ⁢settlements in ‌Judea and Samaria, stating, “Israel doubled Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria -‍ and we will continue ⁣on⁢ this course.”

Israel⁢ further declared it⁢ would‌ not ⁢accept ⁢”detached and imaginary text⁢ that attempts ‌to force it to accept indefensible borders,” and urged countries supporting⁤ palestinian‌ statehood ⁤to ⁤focus on securing the release of ⁤hostages held by Hamas and the group’s⁢ disarmament.

UK Announces Recognition of Palestinian State Amid Gaza Conflict

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 21, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

UK Formally ⁢Recognizes Palestinian Statehood Amidst Escalating Conflict

The United Kingdom has officially recognized the State of Palestine, joining Canada and Australia in a move occurring⁢ shortly ⁣before the 80th session ⁤of the ‍united Nations General Assembly. This decision, ⁤announced recently, underscores the UK’s commitment to‍ a two-state solution and ⁤affirms the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, according‍ to Foreign Secretary Yvette⁢ Cooper.

The recognition‌ arrives as the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate dramatically. The Israeli military’s ongoing operations in Gaza City, aimed at seizing control,⁤ are accompanied by widespread destruction, displacement, and a confirmed famine affecting the enclave’s population.

Simultaneously, ⁤the occupied West Bank is experiencing daily Israeli military raids⁢ and attacks by settlers. Israel is also advancing plans for annexation of Palestinian territory, with some officials openly discussing actions intended to preclude the establishment of‌ a contiguous Palestinian state with East Jerusalem⁢ as it’s capital.

While acknowledging the symbolic ‍importance of the decision, British Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy emphasized that recognizing a Palestinian state will not ‍instantly create one. He reiterated the government’s view that‍ recognition must be integrated into⁢ a broader,⁤ long-stalled peace process.

The Israeli government has strongly condemned the UK’s decision, along with the recognition extended by over 75 percent of UN member states, characterizing it as a reward for terrorism. US President Donald⁤ Trump also voiced his⁢ disagreement with the move during ⁢a recent visit to ⁣the UK.

Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister varsen Aghabekian Shahin welcomed the recognition as a⁤ message of hope for ⁢a free, self-reliant, and sovereign Palestinian ⁣state. She asserted that the move challenges Israel’s ‍claims of sovereignty over Palestinian territories and described israel’s actions as a “systematic assault” on Palestinian existence, culture, ‌and future.

A summit co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia⁤ is scheduled to take place in New ⁢York at the⁤ UN, focusing on advancing a‌ two-state solution.

Analysts, such as Mohamad Elmasry of the Doha ⁢Institute for Graduate‌ Studies, ‌suggest that Western countries might potentially be motivated by public and international pressure ⁣to ⁢act, but question whether these symbolic gestures will translate into substantive action to address the ongoing crisis, notably the situation in Gaza. Despite the recognition, all Palestinian territory remains under Israeli military occupation, with Israel ⁤continuing to assert ‌its right to self-defense.

Title: Hamas Releases Hostage Photos, Warns of Danger in Gaza

Hamas Warns Hostages ‌at Risk as Israel Prepares for Gaza city Offensive

Doha, ⁢Qatar – Hamas officials have⁢ warned that the lives ⁤of Israeli hostages held in Gaza are at increasing⁤ risk as israel signals an imminent large-scale assault ⁤on‌ Gaza City, despite ongoing negotiations for a comprehensive‌ ceasefire and prisoner ⁤exchange. The warning comes⁣ amid stalled talks and escalating international pressure over the conduct of the war, which has resulted in a staggering death toll.

For months,‌ Hamas has stated its willingness to‍ release‍ all Israeli ‍captives in ‍exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, a complete end to the war in Gaza, and⁣ the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory. However,Israeli⁢ Prime ⁣Minister Benjamin⁣ netanyahu has repeatedly⁢ rejected thes proposals, reportedly favoring⁣ phased‍ agreements that⁤ woudl allow him ‍to maintain control over the negotiation process and impose additional conditions.‍ This impasse has fueled accusations, both within‌ Israel and internationally,⁢ that Netanyahu is prolonging the conflict for political gain, ‍potentially at the expense of the hostages’ lives.

The situation evokes the unresolved case of Ron Arad, an Israeli air force navigator whose plane went down ‌over Lebanon‍ in ‌1986. Hamas’s military wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam brigades, recently⁣ released 46 ‍photographs of hostages, each⁤ labeled with⁣ arad’s name,⁣ a poignant reminder of the decades-long‌ uncertainty ⁢surrounding the‍ fate of Israelis missing in conflict. Arad was initially held by Shiite groups in Lebanon and is ‍now‍ presumed dead, his remains never recovered.

Negotiations‌ suffered a setback on September 9th when ‍an Israeli strike ⁣in Doha killed five Hamas ⁣leaders who were⁢ reportedly discussing⁣ a U.S.-brokered ‌proposal to end ‌the war. As of October 2023, ‌nearly‌ 65,000 Palestinians have been killed in‌ Gaza,⁣ according to reports.

The conflict has also drawn international legal scrutiny. ⁢The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister ‍Yoav Gallant, alleging war⁣ crimes and ⁤crimes against humanity‍ committed in Gaza.Israel is also currently facing a genocide ‌case⁢ before the International ⁢court of Justice⁣ regarding ‌its military actions in the enclave.

Portugal Recognizes Palestinian Statehood Amid UN Recognition Push

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 20, 2025

Portugal to Formally⁢ Recognise Palestinian State at UNGA Amidst Growing International Momentum

NEW YORK – Portugal will formally recognize a Palestinian state at the ⁤United Nations‌ General Assembly (UNGA) next week, joining a wave of nations shifting their positions on the decades-long Israel-Palestine conflict. The decision, confirmed by a Friday vote where Portugal was among 145 countries supporting a resolution enabling Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to address the UNGA via video link following a US visa ⁣denial, ⁣underscores increasing international pressure for a two-state ⁢solution.

Five countries – nauru, ‌palau, Paraguay, Israel, and the United States – voted against the resolution allowing Abbas’s address, with six abstaining.

Portugal’s move aligns with⁣ recent announcements from Canada and ⁢the United Kingdom, both ‌of which have indicated their intention to recognize Palestinian statehood.‍ France will also recognize the State of Palestine at⁣ a high-level meeting it is co-organizing with Saudi arabia in New York on Monday.

These nations will add to the 147 countries, representing 75‌ percent of UN members, that had already⁣ recognized Palestinian statehood ‌as of ⁤April 2025.

The growing recognition comes despite strong ‍criticism from the‌ US and Israel.⁣ US ‍Secretary of State Marco Rubio described france’s proclamation ‌as a “reckless decision” that “only serves Hamas propaganda.” Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich warned last year that a new Israeli settlement would be established ⁣in the occupied west Bank for every ⁢country that recognizes‌ Palestine.

luxembourg is also considering recognizing Palestinian statehood and potentially⁣ imposing sanctions against Israel, according to prime Minister⁣ Luc Frieden and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel. UN ⁢Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian ‌territory, Francesca Albanese, has called for broader measures, including sanctions and an arms embargo on‌ Israel, to end ⁤the war in Gaza.

The move towards⁤ recognition echoes the UNGA’s 1947⁣ plan to partition Palestine,⁢ which proposed allocating⁣ 45 percent of the land to an Arab state. Though, at that time, the UNGA consisted⁣ of only 57 member states, with⁤ many countries still under colonial rule and unable to participate in the vote.

US Vetoes UN Resolution Demanding Gaza Ceasefire Amidst Israel Offensive

by David Harrison – Chief Editor September 19, 2025

US Vetoes UN Security Council Gaza Ceasefire Demand for Sixth Time

New York – September 18, 2025 – The United States on Thursday vetoed a United Nations Security Council draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, marking the sixth time the US has blocked such a measure since the start of the conflict. The vote occurred on the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, highlighting deep divisions within the Council and raising concerns about the organization’s credibility.

The resolution, supported by the vast majority of Council members, demanded an immediate halt to hostilities. However, the US, citing its continued support for Israel’s right to defend itself, cast the sole dissenting vote.

palestinian Permanent Observer to the united Nations, Riyad H. Mansour, expressed dismay following the veto. “The Council remains silent at a grate cost for its credibility and authority,” Mansour added. “This demonstrates that when it comes to atrocity crimes, the use of the veto should simply not be allowed.”

Algerian Ambassador to the UN, Amar Bendjama, delivered a poignant appeal, stating, “Palestinian brothers, Palestinian sisters, forgive us,” adding, “Forgive us because the world speaks of rights, but denies them to Palestinians. Forgive us because our efforts, our sincere efforts, shattered against this wall of rejection.” He detailed the devastating toll of the war, noting that it had killed more than 18,000 children and 12,000 women, and also over 1,400 doctors and nurses, and more than 250 journalists. Bendjama asserted that Israel was “immune” not due to international law, but because of a “bias of the international system.”

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, stated that Israel needed “no justification” for its war on Gaza and thanked the US for exercising its veto.

Al Jazeera’s diplomatic editor, James Bays, reporting from New York, described the vote as a “sombre” moment. He noted the contrast between countries championing “multilateral diplomacy” and the US adopting an “America-first view of the world,” further pointing to US cuts in humanitarian funding to the UN, contributing to what he described as one of the lowest points in the organization’s 80-year history.

The veto comes as Israel continues its ground offensive on Gaza City, launched Tuesday, signaling a commitment to crushing Hamas, with no specific timeline provided for the operation, though indications suggest it could last months.

Earlier this week, a team of independent experts commissioned by the UN Human Rights Council concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, with the intent to “destroy” the Palestinians.

Prior to the vote, Danon had posted on X that the resolution woudl “not free the hostages nor bring security,” and reiterated Israel’s commitment to fighting Hamas and protecting its citizens.

danish Ambassador to the UN, Christina Markus Lassen, underscored the severity of the man-made famine in Gaza, stating, “desperate mothers are forced to boil leaves to feed their children, fathers search the rubble for sustenance,” and warned that “people are killed as they try to get food to survive. A generation risks being lost not only to war, but to hunger and despair.”
