Rescued Lion from ukraine Undergoes Emergency Dental Surgery in Kent
KENT, ENGLAND – A lioness rescued from war-torn Ukraine has successfully undergone a complex dental procedure at The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent to remove a severely infected tooth. Lira, one of five lions brought to the sanctuary following a fundraising campaign, was found to have a considerable growth on her jawline during a routine health check.
The discovery prompted immediate action from the sanctuary’s veterinary team, led byโข curator Briony smith, who resolute the issue was far more serious โขthan initially suspected. Theโ procedure, completed while Lira was safely sedated and monitored, removed a massive infectedโฃ tooth and eliminated a notable source of potential toxins within her โbody. โคThe successfulโ surgeryโค marks a critical step in Lira’s โฃongoing recovery and rehabilitation after โa traumatic journey from Ukraine.
Lira arrived at The Big cat Sanctuary after managing director Cam Whitnall spearheaded a ยฃ500,000 fundraising effort to evacuate her and four other lionsโค from theโ conflict zone. โShe experienced grass for the firstโ time upon arrivalโข in August 2024,a symbolic moment highlighting the sanctuary’s commitment to providing โa safe haven for animals displaced byโ crisis.
“We had noticed a small lump โฃon Lira’s jawline, but it is โคimpractical for usโฃ to know the extent of the problem in situations like this,” explained Smith. “I am so glad we booked โher in, as it โขwas a much biggerโฃ issueโข than anyโฃ of us had anticipated.”
Following the surgery, Lira was transportedโ back to her enclosure where the anaesthetic was reversed,โค allowing her to wake up under close veterinary supervision. Whileโฃ some initial discomfort is expected, veterinariansโค anticipate a full recoveryโฃ as the toxins areโ eliminated from her system. The โBig Cat Sanctuary continues to monitor Lira’s progress and provide ongoing care.
