Isha Ambaniโ Piramal Opens Up Aboutโ IVF Journey, Advocates for Normalizing ART
Isha Ambani Piramal, daughter ofโ Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani, has publicly discussed her use of in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) to conceive her twins, Krishna andโ Adiyashakti, born in November 2022.โค She expressed a desire to destigmatize theโค assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedure, noting its increasing prevalence globally.
In a recent interview wiht Vogue India, Ambani stated, “I’m โvery quick to say that my twins were conceived through IVF because that’s how we’ll normalise it, right?” She emphasized the importance of open conversation, adding, “No one โคshouldโฃ feel isolated orโ embarrassed. It’s โขa โฃdifficultโค process. When you go through it, you get physically exhausted.”
Ambani, 32, highlighted the โคbenefits of ART for women facing fertilityโ challenges. Approximately 250,000-300,000 IVF treatments are performed annually in India alone. She questioned why modern technology assisting โคin conception should be hidden, stating, “If โmodern technologyโค exists โขin theโ world today, why not use it to have children? It should be something you’re excited about, not something you have toโข hide.” Sheโข alsoโ suggested the value of support groups and connecting with other women undergoing similar experiences.
Isha’s own โexperience mirrors that of her mother,Nita Ambani, whoโข also conceived twins – Isha and Akash – throughโข IVF. nita Ambani previously shared thatโค she was initially told she โwould beโค unable โto have children, but successfully conceived with theโฃ help of โDr. โขFiruza Parikh.
IVF involves removing eggs from a โwoman’s ovaries and fertilizing them with sperm in a laboratory, then transferring theโค resulting embryos to the uterus. It’s increasingly utilized by โคcouples experiencing infertility due to issues like blocked fallopianโ tubes, ovulation disorders, endometriosis, or โmale infertility. It’s โalso used by those โฃat โฃrisk of genetic disorders and by lesbian โคcouples and single parents utilizing donor eggs, sperm, or surrogacy.
While a valuable option, IVF is not guaranteed to result in pregnancy. Success rates depend on factors like age,โข underlying fertility issues, and the specificโข techniques employed. The procedure also carries potential risks, including ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), multiple pregnancies, and complications โฃfrom โegg retrieval. Furthermore, the cost of IVF can be substantial,โ and failed attempts can lead to both physicalโค and โemotional โฃdistress.
