Apple iPhone 17 Pro Scratches: #Scratchgate Controversy

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor September 23, 2025
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

New iPhones Plagued ⁢by Scratch Complaints‍ Just Days After ⁣Launch -‌ #Scratchgate trends

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC – Apple’s newly released iPhone 17 Pro ‍and Pro max are facing widespread complaints of easily visible scratches, sparking a social media outcry under the hashtag #scratchgate. Reports began surfacing on the ‍phones’ first day of sale, with users documenting grooves ‍appearing‌ on devices exhibited in stores and on newly ⁤purchased models.

Customers are‌ questioning how the phones could sustain damage so quickly. The scratches are ‍most frequently appearing around ‌the phone’s edges and on the back of the device.

The issue primarily affects the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, which retail in the Czech market starting at approximately⁢ 33,000 crowns. This year’s⁢ models feature a ⁢return to⁤ aluminum casing ‌after last year’s titanium design, and many beleive ‍the softer material ⁣is to blame. ‌While aluminum is more affordable, ‍it is more susceptible to scratches than⁤ titanium.

Apple stated the design change was intended ⁢to improve device performance, battery capacity, ‌durability,‍ and‍ address overheating issues.

Bloomberg reports the problem isn’t⁢ limited to the Pro models, noting that ‌the iPhone Air‍ – currently Apple’s thinnest smartphone – is also showing ‌vulnerability. While the ⁢iPhone Air doesn’t bend like the iPhone 6 of 2014, its ‌black variant ‌is reportedly easily scratched, even with its glass back.

Many scratches‌ appear⁢ to be originating from the area housing the MagSafe system, used⁤ for attaching wireless chargers and ⁢other accessories. Some users claim their new iPhones arrived from official sales ⁤with pre-existing scratches, particularly on the dark blue and orange color variations. Some are recommending the silver model as a possibly more scratch-resistant option.

This isn’t the first time Apple has faced similar issues. The iPhone 6 (2014) was known for bending, and the iPhone 7,in its Jet⁣ Black finish, was prone to scratching.

Apple has not yet commented on the current situation.

Apple fails with DMA not brake: iPhone has to become more compatible

Apple’s Attempt to Circumvent EU’s Digital Markets Act Fails: iPhone Compatibility Changes Required

Brussels -‌ Apple’s last-ditch effort to delay full⁢ compliance with ‌the European⁢ Union’s landmark Digital Markets act (DMA) has been rejected, forcing the tech giant‍ to open up its iPhone ecosystem to greater interoperability. The EU Commission ruled ⁢against Apple’s⁤ proposed solutions, demanding more ample changes to allow third-party apps and services to function seamlessly on iOS devices. This decision⁢ marks a meaningful victory for regulators seeking to curb the power⁢ of tech monopolies ‌and foster competition in the digital marketplace.

The DMA,⁤ which came into effect in May, aims to prevent “gatekeeper” companies – those with significant market power – ⁢from stifling innovation and limiting consumer choice. Apple argued that fully complying with the DMA would compromise user privacy, security,⁣ and the overall ⁣user experience. Though, the Commission found Apple’s proposed measures insufficient, stating they did ‌not adequately address concerns about ‌fair access for rival services. This ruling⁣ impacts millions of iPhone users in the EU and sets a precedent for how other‌ tech giants will be regulated⁢ under the new law.

During a press event, Apple’s top manager Greg Joswiak voiced strong opposition to the DMA, claiming it would “provide a poorer user experience,” undermine innovation, “violate Apple’s intellectual property,” and “damage ⁣data protection and ⁢security,” as reported by the BBC. Joswiak lamented the potential loss of Apple’s “magic – the seamless integration that we offer.”

The Commission’s decision ⁣compels Apple to allow third-party app stores, alternative payment systems, and greater interoperability⁣ with messaging apps like whatsapp and⁢ Signal. Apple now faces a deadline to⁤ implement thes changes or risk substantial fines – up to 10%⁤ of its global annual turnover, perhaps rising to 20% for repeated infringements. The changes are expected to be rolled out‍ with iOS 18 later this year.

Title: Apple’s N1 Chip: More Efficient iPhone Location Tracking

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor September 22, 2025
written by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Apple’s latest iOS 26 update includes a new WLAN chip, designated N1, promising ⁤more⁣ efficient⁤ iPhone location tracking-a feature currently blocked ‌for users in⁣ the european Union. The company is reportedly withholding functionality that analyzes routes traveled to suggest choice ⁤paths during traffic congestion, ⁢fearing it would trigger obligations under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) to open the⁤ technology to competing⁢ app providers. This⁤ move comes as Apple refines ⁤its location services, aiming to provide users with proactive navigation assistance. While the feature is available globally outside⁢ the EU, the company’s hesitation stems from concerns that⁢ enabling it within the bloc would necessitate allowing third-party map applications access to the same data⁢ and⁣ capabilities, perhaps undermining its competitive advantage. The DMA, designed to foster‌ competition in ⁤digital markets, requires dominant players like Apple to ensure interoperability with rival ⁣services.

According to Heise Online, Apple’s card app currently tracks visited locations and learns frequently used routes to anticipate and suggest alternative pathways when traffic delays occur.the company has so far prevented the activation⁣ of these functions within the‌ EU, apparently to avoid ‍compliance with the⁣ DMA’s stipulations regarding data access for other app developers.

Tech ‌Firms ‌face scrutiny‍ as New ⁣Visa Costs Take Effect

WASHINGTON ⁣- A new policy impacting H-1B visas ⁢went‍ into effect on Sunday, September 21st,⁢ triggering a scramble among U.S.-based technology companies⁤ reliant on foreign workers. The increased costs associated with‍ renewing adn extending visas are disproportionately affecting major players ‌like Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft, alongside a broader‌ range of employers.

The financial burden stems from a recent rule requiring⁣ companies to pay ‌the full⁤ visa fee each time an H-1B petition is extended, rather⁣ then‍ the previous‍ system of ⁢reimbursement‍ for certain‌ extensions. ‌This change primarily impacts employees originating from India, with Amazon and amazon Web Services accounting for approximately 12,000 H-1B visas, and Microsoft and ‍Meta⁢ collectively holding over 5,000. Companies are now navigating the⁤ complex decision of whether to absorb these costs, pass them⁤ onto ‍employees, or potentially reduce their foreign workforce.

Beyond the immediate financial implications, the policy shift underscores⁢ growing scrutiny of H-1B visas-a‌ key pathway⁣ for skilled foreign workers in specialized fields-and its ‍potential impact on the U.S.⁤ tech industry’s ‌global competitiveness. The situation is unfolding as Great Britain announced ‍a notable investment in palantir, a data analytics firm, signaling a different ‌approach to attracting and retaining technology talent.
