Dementia Week runs from September 18 to 24. On the occasion of that theme week, an exceptional exhibition with works by residents with dementia will open in the Zonnig Huis residential care center.
Dementia unfortunately affects many people. During Dementia Week we therefore want to adjust the outside world’s perception of people with dementia. They remain first and foremost people with a story, a past and a future. In the Zonnig Huis residential care center we do this with an exhibition of works by the residents themselves.
Dementia in the picture with art
With the exhibition we portray dementia through art. We made the works of art together with the residents of the Nura department. It is people with dementia who started working like this.
Significant
The results are impressive. During the project we saw even more how meaningful it can be to work on this together with the residents. We want to demonstrate that people with dementia are certainly still capable of creating beautiful things and that they are meaningful.
Signal to the outside world
Coming out with this is also a signal to the outside world that this group should not be forgotten and deserves attention.
We started from the idea of working with the silhouettes of the heads of our residents. Because dementia starts in the brain. From there we look at the people themselves: who are they, who were they in the past, what interests or profession did they have, what talents do they have?
Nice results
The great results came naturally. It depicts the symptoms and characteristics of someone with dementia in a symbolic way. Problems with language, memory, influence on daily life, the phases of dementia, brains that do not want to cooperate,… everyone can find their own image and symbolism.
The exhibition can be visited by the general public daily from September 22, 2023 to December 10, 2023 from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM in the Zonnig Huis residential care center at August Demaeghtlaan 36 in Halle.
