York Region Public Health (YRPH) is investigating a confirmed case of measles.

On the 29th, YRPH announced that a man in his 30s with no travel history or contact with a patient was confirmed. On the 16th, an infant patient was discovered infected while traveling in Toronto.

Measles outbreaks have been occurring sporadically in Ontario since 1998, when the disease subsided due to vaccination.

The Health Department recommends that anyone who has visited the following locations immediately check to see if they have received two doses of measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV):

•Melt N Dip, 1018 Eglinton Ave. E., Mississauga, Saturday the 24th between 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM

•Mackenzie Health Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, 3200 Major Mackenzie Dr. W., Monday the 26th between 2:40 PM and 4:55 PM

•Vellore Medical Clinic (10395 Weston Rd, Woodbridge), Monday the 26th between 12:10 PM and 5:30 PM

If you are traveling with an infant under 6 months old or have a weakened immune system, please contact the health department or Access York at 1-877-464-9675 (TTY 1-866-512-6228) for preventive treatment.

The health department is tracing additional contacts who may have been exposed to the virus.

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that is easily spread through droplets such as air or respiratory secretions. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, fatigue, red eyes, and rash accompanied by fatigue, and it causes complications such as diarrhea, otitis media, and bronchitis. Infants under 1 year of age, pregnant women, and patients are particularly at risk.

Currently, measles is spreading rapidly around the world, with more than 40,000 cases reported, especially in Europe. Last year, the number of measles patients worldwide was estimated at approximately 300,000.
