UN Blacklists Companies for Role in Israeli Settlements

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 26, 2025

UN Expands Blacklist of Companies Linked‍ to Israeli Settlement Activity

GENEVA – The United nations Human⁤ Rights Council has added 68 companies to its blacklist ‌of those allegedly complicit in human rights violations related to Israeli settlements in the West Bank, bringing the total number of listed businesses to ⁣164. The revised ⁣list, released ‌today, comes amid escalating tensions and recent Israeli ⁢actions including veiled threats of annexation and approvals for⁣ thousands of new settlement⁢ homes.

The list was last revised in 2023, ⁣when it contained 97 companies ⁢- a ‌reduction from the original ⁢112 published in 2020, which included U.S.-based General‍ Mills.

The UN⁣ council identifies ten types of business activities in the settlements that could warrant inclusion on the list, ranging from pollution dumping in‌ Palestinian areas to supplying equipment used⁤ for demolition and ‌surveillance, and⁢ even⁤ facilitating tourism and lodging within the settlements.

The international community ⁣maintains that⁢ a two-state ⁢solution requires dividing the territory⁤ to allow for‌ both a Jewish ⁣majority in Israel and Palestinian self-determination. ‍Critics warn that continued settlement expansion risks ⁤creating an ⁣apartheid-like state where Palestinians are ruled‍ by Israelis.

Over 500,000 Israelis currently reside in the West Bank, wiht an additional 200,000 in East Jerusalem. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated Israel‍ has no⁤ intention of⁢ dismantling‌ these settlements and has ruled out an independent Palestinian state. Palestinians claim ⁤the West Bank,East Jerusalem, and gaza⁤ for a ⁣future independent state.

The UN has allocated funding for‌ one full-time staff member to manage‍ the complex process⁤ of gathering data, assessing claims, and communicating with the companies involved. claims regarding hundreds of other companies are⁢ currently under review.

Israel and the United States have frequently accused the Human Rights Council of ‌anti-Israel‌ bias, leading the Trump administration to withdraw the‍ U.S.‌ from the council.

Trump at UN: Denouncing Globalists and Addressing World Leaders

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 23, 2025

Live – UN general Assembly: Donald Trump Returns with Sharp ‌Criticism Expected

NEW YORK – Donald Trump addressed the UN General Assembly Tuesday, launching a broadside against “globalist organizations” and signaling a combative approach‌ to international relations. The former president, making a highly anticipated return to the world stage eight months after regaining office, is expected to denounce multilateralism and tout his⁣ administration’s record on peace and foreign aid.

Trump’s speech comes as his administration has already begun to⁤ reshape ⁤U.S. foreign⁣ policy, upsetting established alliances, imposing customs taxes, and considerably cutting American foreign aid. While claiming⁤ to have ended “seven wars” since January, his policies have drawn criticism ⁣for ⁣destabilizing ⁣international cooperation and prioritizing unilateral ‍action. World leaders are closely watching to gauge the ⁣direction of U.S.‍ engagement under his renewed leadership.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt ‌stated that Trump intends to praise his peaceful actions and will attack those he ⁣deems responsible for maintaining ‌the existing “world ‌order.” He is ⁤also expected ⁢to criticize countries that have recently recognized the state of Palestine, with Leavitt asserting the president “thinks it’s a reward for Hamas.”

Beyond his address, Trump is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky and Argentinian President Javier Milei. The White House also ⁤announced a meeting with ⁣leaders from several Muslim nations, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, the⁤ united ⁣Arab Emirates, ‍and Jordan.‌

The speech follows a recent UN summit where France joined approximately 150 other countries in recognizing Palestinian statehood – a move the Trump administration views as symbolically ‍notable ⁣and detrimental to its foreign policy objectives.

French Town Halls Defy Government, Display Palestinian ‍Flags Amidst Recognition Debate

Paris, France – Despite warnings from the French ⁤government and initial legal rulings, ⁢several mayors ⁣across France are continuing to fly the Palestinian flag from their ‌town halls, signaling a growing political rift as France considers formally⁤ recognizing a Palestinian state.

The defiance⁣ began as President Emmanuel Macron prepares‌ to address the United‌ Nations‍ General Assembly, where he is ‍expected to announce⁢ France’s recognition of Palestine. Mayors in municipalities including Nanterre, Bagneux,⁤ Gennevilliers, Ivry-sur-Seine, and Corbeil-Essonnes ‌are joining the movement, displaying the red, black, white, and green banner as a exhibition of solidarity.

The situation ⁢escalated in Malakoff, where Mayor ‌Jacqueline Belhomme (PCF) has refused⁤ to comply with an‌ injunction from the Administrative Court of ‌Cergy-Pontoise to⁢ remove the flag. The Prefect⁣ of Hauts-de-Seine has now‌ escalated the matter, requesting a financial penalty be ⁢imposed on the municipality.

“This ‍is not a long-term⁢ militant ‍act,” ⁢explained Mathieu⁣ Hanotin, the Socialist mayor‌ of⁣ saint-Denis, to⁣ AFP. “It’s a choice made in light of President Macron’s impending decision.” Hanotin’s stance aligns with instructions from Olivier Faure, the first ⁤secretary of the‌ Socialist Party ⁤(PS). ‍

Notably,‌ the mayor of Saint-Ouen, Karim‍ bouamrane, intends to fly ‍ both ⁤the palestinian and Israeli flags, aiming to demonstrate a ‌commitment to ⁢balanced representation.⁣ Mayors in Lille and Nantes are also reportedly considering similar displays.

The ⁤move comes ⁣after Interior ‍Minister Bruno Retailleau cautioned against displaying‌ the⁤ Palestinian flag on public buildings,‌ a warning largely ignored by these local officials. The⁤ debate highlights the‍ deep ⁤divisions within ‍French politics regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the timing of potential state recognition.

Chinese and Philippine Vessels ⁤Clash in south China Sea

MANILA, Philippines (AP) – A confrontation between Chinese‍ and Philippine vessels in the South China Sea on Tuesday ⁤resulted in damage to‌ a Philippine ship and injury to a crew member, escalating⁤ tensions over ⁢the ‍disputed waterway. The⁣ Philippine coast guard accused Chinese forces⁢ of using powerful water⁣ cannons against⁣ its vessels while delivering supplies to Filipino ‍fishermen near Scarborough Shoal, a contested area known⁤ as Huangyan Island‌ in chinese.

The Philippine coast guard stated that two Chinese coast ‍guard ships targeted the BRP Datu Gumbay Piang with water cannons for nearly 30 minutes, causing “significant damage” to the ship’s captain’s cabin, bridge, and electrical systems. A shattered glass window injured a personnel on board. Together, a Chinese navy warship issued ‍a radio notice announcing⁢ “live-fire⁤ exercises” at the‍ shoal, prompting alarm among Filipino fishermen in the vicinity.

China’s coast guard acknowledged deploying water cannons, claiming that more⁢ than 10 Philippine government ships had entered waters around the shoal.

The incident occured‌ six days after China announced the designation of part of Scarborough Shoal⁣ as a national nature⁣ reserve, a move protested by the Philippines, which refers to the ‍shoal as Bajo⁣ de Masinloc.

The‌ South China Sea is a strategically vital region with valuable fishing grounds, and ⁤is subject to overlapping territorial claims from several ⁤countries, including China and the Philippines. China asserts sovereignty over almost the ⁣entire sea, a‍ claim disputed by its neighbors.

The United States, the ⁣United Kingdom, Australia, and canada have expressed concern over China’s actions.U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the incident “yet another coercive move” by China to advance its claims in the region. The Canadian Embassy in the Philippines‌ stated its opposition to using environmental protection as a pretext for asserting control over ‌the disputed shoal.

The philippine ⁢coast guard and fisheries ships were providing aid-fuel, water, ice, and other supplies-to over 35 filipino fishing boats in the area at the time of the incident.

Philippine Military Defies Calls to Withdraw Support from Marcos Amid Corruption Scandal

Philippine Military Leaders Affirm Loyalty to Marcos Amid Corruption Allegations

MANILA, Philippines – Top Philippine defense and military officials publicly reaffirmed their support for President Ferdinand⁤ Marcos Jr. on Friday, ⁢rejecting calls for the armed forces to withdraw allegiance following public outrage over alleged ⁢corruption in flood⁤ control projects. Defense Secretary Gilberto⁢ Teodoro Jr.and Armed Forces of the philippines‍ Chief of Staff General⁣ Romeo⁢ Brawner Jr. issued‌ a joint statement ⁣emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule‍ of law and unity.

The ‍statement came in response to a recent rally where a speaker urged the military to defect and called for a‌ “people power”⁢ revolt reminiscent of the uprisings that ousted Ferdinand Marcos Sr. in 1986 and Joseph Estrada in 2001. teodoro and brawner defended the ongoing anti-corruption investigation initiated by Marcos, calling attempts to distract the military “futile and irresponsible.”

According to a⁤ confidential government security assessment obtained by the Associated Press, while groups⁢ opposed to Marcos are leveraging public anger over the flood control issues, a ⁢large-scale uprising is considered unlikely without military backing. ⁢The assessment indicated strong loyalty ⁢within the ⁢armed forces and police, citing ⁢patriotism and commitment to the⁢ constitution and the president.

The controversy centers on‍ an estimated 545 billion pesos ($9.6 billion) spent on flood mitigation projects over the past three ‍years. President Marcos has personally ‍inspected projects ⁢and found evidence of substandard or ⁤non-existent work, leading to the formation of an autonomous commission to investigate the⁢ “horrible” anomalies. Funding for future flood control projects has been temporarily withheld,⁤ and the public works secretary has resigned.

Two national ⁤security and defense⁣ officials, speaking anonymously ⁣to AP, confirmed there are currently no monitored⁤ threats of secessionism within the military or police.

Flights at Haneda Airport experienced notable delays as air traffic control and ground services were⁢ temporarily suspended due to lightning strikes. Railway operations, including the ⁣region’s high-speed ⁣bullet train network and othre⁤ commuter lines, were ⁤also halted as a safety precaution. The storm caused localized flooding across Tokyo, with some residents reporting hail.‍ Tokyo Electric ⁢Power Company Holdings reported over 7,000 homes lost‍ power during the peak of the storm, though service ⁣was largely restored by late Thursday.Authorities are continuing to assess ‍the damage and prepare for potential further impacts from ongoing inclement weather.
