Trump’s Attempt to Remove Fed Governor Lisa Cook Fails

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 16, 2025

Trump Management Suffers Setback as Appeals Court Blocks Removal of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook

WASHINGTON – In a notable defeat for the Trump administration, the U.S. Court of Appeals has temporarily blocked the effort too remove Federal reserve Governor Lisa Cook from her position. The ruling, issued by a 2-1 majority, allows Cook to continue serving while the courts deliberate on the legality of Trump’s attempt to oust her based on allegations of mortgage fraud.

The decision represents a key win for Cook and a potential check on the administration’s pressure campaign to lower interest rates. The Federal Reserve operates with a degree of independence from the executive branch to ensure stable monetary policy, and attempts to directly influence it’s leadership raise concerns about political interference. This case underscores the ongoing tension between presidential authority and the independence of financial regulatory bodies.

The administration had argued Cook’s appointment was invalid due to alleged financial discrepancies. Though, the appeals court determined there was sufficient legal basis to allow her to remain in her role pending a full review of the claims.

Despite this setback, the Senate narrowly confirmed Christopher Miran,President Trump’s choice for a seat on the federal Reserve Board,by a vote of 48-47. Miran’s confirmation grants him the ability to participate in this week’s Federal Open Market Committee meeting, where crucial decisions regarding monetary policy will be made. His presence could shift the balance of opinion within the committee, perhaps aligning it more closely with the administration’s preference for lower interest rates.

Hyundai Battery Plant Controversy: Workers Detained, Local Anger Rising

hyundai Plant Hiring Practices Spark⁤ Local concerns⁢ in Georgia

RINCON, GA -⁤ A recent raid by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at a Hyundai Motor supplier‌ in Rincon, ⁣Georgia, has ‌brought simmering tensions over hiring practices to the surface, with⁢ local staffing agencies alleging a preference for Korean workers over American applicants. The situation ‌is⁤ fueling dissatisfaction in communities surrounding Hyundai’s expanding Metaplant facility and its⁤ network of suppliers.

the controversy‌ centers on claims⁢ that korean manufacturers connected to Hyundai prioritize bringing in workers ‌from South Korea, even for positions ⁣not typically requiring specialized skills. This practice, according to local staffing‍ firms, has led to the termination of contracts employing⁢ American workers and‍ a sense of economic frustration in the Savannah area. The issue‍ highlights the complex dynamics of foreign investment and its impact⁣ on the domestic labor market, particularly ⁣as‍ Hyundai‌ invests billions in its ⁢Georgia ⁤manufacturing operations.

One staffing company manager, speaking anonymously, reported deploying⁢ approximately 60⁣ workers to a Hyundai supplier roughly a year ago, only to have⁢ the ‍contract cancelled and those positions filled⁣ by workers flown in from South Korea. These roles, the manager stated, involved assembly work generally accessible to less-skilled laborers. Similar accounts from other agencies suggest⁤ a ⁢pattern of ⁣prioritizing ⁤Korean nationals.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp acknowledges the ‌concerns but maintains confidence in the legal compliance of Hyundai and its South⁣ Korean ‌partners. “As President Trump has⁣ pointed out, our relationship with the South Korean⁣ government and South korean companies is built on ⁤a solid ⁢foundation,” Kemp stated, indicating his management intends to continue fostering the relationship.

The ICE raid, which detained Korean workers, ⁣further intensified scrutiny of labor practices at Hyundai’s supply chain. Bloomberg reported the raid followed complaints regarding document falsification during the hiring process. The ⁢incident underscores ⁢the potential for legal and ethical challenges as Hyundai ramps up ⁣production and expands its footprint‍ in the ‍United States.

Japan Airlines Drunk Pilot Incident: JAL Faces Scrutiny and Firings

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 10, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Japan Airlines (JAL) will ⁣terminate ⁤the employment of a⁤ pilot⁤ who failed a pre-flight alcohol ⁢screening, causing delays to three flights, following⁣ a strong reprimand from the Japanese ‌transport ‌ministry. the incident, revealed ⁣Wednesday, adds to a ‍pattern of similar occurrences at the airline‍ and⁤ prompted‌ the Ministry⁢ of ⁣Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to demand JAL submit preventative measures by the end of⁤ the‌ month.

This is⁤ not the first‍ time JAL has faced scrutiny over pilot alcohol consumption. The ministry issued ‌a prior warning to the airline in‌ December regarding previous incidents, citing a lack ⁣of sufficient safety consideration among employees. The latest⁢ case involved a pilot who‍ consumed three pints (568 millilitres each) ‍of beer the‍ day before a scheduled flight⁣ from Honolulu to Chubu airport ⁤near Nagoya on August ‌28.”We ⁣take this issue very ⁣seriously and deeply⁣ apologise for causing⁣ trouble ⁤and ‌worries,” JAL ⁢president ‍Mitsuko Tottori stated at‌ a press conference. Israel-India Investment Deal Deepens Ties Amidst Geopolitical Shifts

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 9, 2025

India and Israel Forge Closer Economic⁢ Ties with New Investment Deal

NEW DELHI – India and Israel‌ have signed a important investment agreement aimed at bolstering economic ⁣cooperation between the two nations, even as ⁣Israel faces international scrutiny over ‌its actions in Gaza. The deal, announced this week, ‌is expected to “open new opportunities for⁤ investors in both countries, strengthen Israeli exports, and provide businesses with the certainty and tools to grow in one of the⁤ world’s largest and fastest-growing markets,” according to a statement released ⁤following the agreement.

India’s‌ Ministry of Finance hailed the deal as a “historic milestone,” emphasizing its potential to foster collaboration in “fintech innovation, infrastructure⁢ development, financial regulation, and digital payment connectivity.”

Currently, bilateral trade between India and Israel stands at $3.9 billion (2024 figures), with‍ mutual investments valued at approximately $800 million. ⁣However, a considerable portion of the trade centers on defense and security, with India being Israel’s largest purchaser of weapons.Recent investigations by Al Jazeera revealed ‌that Indian firms also exported rockets ‌and explosives to Israel during its ongoing war in Gaza.

The agreement coincides ‌with a strengthening of ties between New delhi and Israel, despite growing international criticism of‌ Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. India was among the first countries‍ to express support for Israel following the ‍October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas, condemning it ‍as “an act of terror.”‍

This support has manifested in a domestic crackdown on pro-Palestine demonstrations, with some protests criminalized, while pro-Israel⁤ rallies have been permitted.while India⁣ continues to publicly support a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, it has consistently abstained from United ⁢Nations resolutions critical of Israeli actions against palestinians, including a recent vote calling for a ceasefire in Gaza in 2024.

The deepening relationship extends beyond trade ⁣and political alignment. India is the largest source of⁤ foreign students in Israel, ‍and Israeli construction companies are actively seeking to recruit up to 100,000 Indian workers to fill ⁣positions vacated by Palestinians following permit‌ revocations ⁤after the start of the war in october 2023.

Recent geopolitical shifts⁢ are also influencing India’s foreign policy.New‍ delhi has refrained from condemning Israel’s actions against iran‍ and initially declined to support a condemnation of Israeli attacks within the ⁤Shanghai Cooperation ‍Organisation (SCO). However, following the ⁤imposition ⁣of 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods by the United States⁢ last month, India signed an SCO declaration condemning the US-Israeli⁢ bombing of Iran.

Furthermore, India is actively working to improve relations with China, a move that represents a ⁢potential⁣ shift away from ⁤its previous alignment with the US as a counterweight to ⁣Beijing.Chinese President Xi Jinping recently stated to indian prime Minister⁢ modi that China and India “should be partners, not rivals,” ⁤during ⁣a meeting at the SCO summit in Tianjin.

Eskom: South Africa to End Load Shedding by March 2026

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 8, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Eskom Declares Load Shedding Suspension for South Africa Through March 2026

South Africa’s‌ state-owned electricity provider, Eskom, has announced a suspension of planned power outages, known as load shedding, for the upcoming summer period, ⁤extending through March 2026. This marks a significant shift from recent years characterized by frequent⁣ and disruptive blackouts impacting both households and businesses.

The declaration follows a period of ⁣unexpectedly⁢ stable grid performance throughout the winter months. ‍Eskom reports the grid operated at 97% stability during ⁣winter, resulting in only 26 hours of rotational power⁤ cuts – a ⁣substantial‍ betterment compared to previous winters with prolonged shortages.

Eskom attributes this positive ⁢change to a 4,000 megawatt increase in generation capacity, coupled with intensive maintenance and repair work on aging power plants undertaken by its engineering teams. Dan Marokane, Eskom’s Chief Group Executive, described the improvement as‌ a “structural shift” in the generation fleet’s performance, noting it has also yielded‌ substantial financial benefits. The utility saw a reduction of R16 billion (approximately US$851 million) in diesel‍ expenses due to decreased reliance on costly‍ emergency fuel generation.

The news has been met with optimism by South Africans who have long endured ‌the economic and social consequences of ⁤load shedding, which has hampered industries, small businesses, and essential services⁤ like hospitals and ⁢schools.Eskom leadership⁢ suggests a definitive end to load shedding is becoming‍ increasingly attainable.

However, officials are clarifying‌ a distinction between load shedding and load reduction. While load shedding is a planned measure to balance⁣ the ⁤grid, load reduction involves purposeful ‌power cuts in ⁣specific‌ areas due to network overloads or ⁤illegal electricity connections. ⁤ Minister of Energy and Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, acknowledged public⁣ confusion between⁤ the two and stated a plan to address load reduction will be released within two weeks.

Analysts suggest sustained improvement ⁣in Eskom’s performance could provide a vital boost to the South African economy, restoring investor confidence and lowering⁣ operational costs for businesses. A stable power supply is considered ‌crucial for ⁢attracting investment ‌and fostering ‍economic growth in Africa’s most industrialized nation.

Despite the ⁣positive outlook, experts caution that continued maintenance of existing ‍plants and diversification of energy ‌sources are essential to⁣ prevent ‍a return to crisis⁣ conditions. The period through⁤ March 2026 will ⁢serve as a critical test of Eskom’s ability to ⁢maintain⁣ this improved performance. For now, households and industries⁤ alike are welcoming the relief and ‌hoping that the utility will keep its promise to keep the lights on ⁣until March 2026.
