India and Russia explore Local Production of Advanced Su-57 Fighter Jets
New Delhi – Russia is conducting feasibility studies regarding potential investment and the localized manufacture of its fifth-generation Su-57 fighter jets in India, a move signaling deepening defense cooperation between the two nations. the possibility of producing the advanced aircraft domestically comes as Moscow seeks to broaden its economic ties with India and navigate evolving geopolitical dynamics.
This development arrives amid ongoing discussions to bolster India’s indigenous defense capabilities and reduce reliance on imported military hardware. The potential co-production of the Su-57, should the studies prove favorable, would represent a significant leap in India’s aerospace manufacturing sector, impacting national security and potentially influencing regional power balances. The initiative also reflects Russia’s willingness to transfer technology and engage in collaborative projects with India,a long-standing strategic partner.
According to sources, Russia’s state-run Rostec corporation is currently evaluating investment opportunities and logistical requirements for establishing a production facility within India. The studies will assess the economic viability of the project, including potential costs, timelines, and the level of technology transfer involved. While no firm commitments have been made, officials indicate a strong interest from both sides in exploring this avenue.
The exploration of Su-57 production aligns with India’s broader “Make in India” initiative, aimed at fostering domestic manufacturing and reducing dependence on foreign arms suppliers. Currently,India operates a substantial fleet of Russian-origin military equipment, including Su-30MKI fighters,T-90 tanks, and Kilo-class submarines. Continued collaboration on advanced platforms like the Su-57 would ensure interoperability and maintain a strategic advantage.
Discussions surrounding the Su-57 program are taking place alongside ongoing negotiations for other defense projects, including the procurement of additional S-400 air defense systems and the co-development of the FGFA (Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft) based on the Su-57 platform. The outcome of the feasibility studies is anticipated to influence future defense agreements and shape the trajectory of India-Russia military cooperation in the years to come.
