Brussels Facesโค Pressure to Revise 2035 Combustion Engine Banโ as Six Nations Push forโ Hybrid Vehicle Future
A coalition of six European Union member states – Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland,โข Hungary,โ and Bulgaria โ- is urging the EU to โmaintain the possibility of โขselling hybrid vehicles โand highlyโ efficient internal combustion engine โ(ICE) cars โafter the planned 2035 ban on new combustionโข engine sales. The move comes โas the โeuropean Commission finalizes itsโฃ review of โขthe legislation.
The countries argue that โคa complete ban is driven by “ideological dogmatism” and has negatively impacted manufacturing sectors without deliveringโ proportional environmental benefits. โThey areโค calling for “technological neutrality,” allowing a range of โtechnologies to contribute to emissions reductions.โ The request also includes advocating for the recognition of biofuels as zero-emission fuels.
Outgoing Czechโ Prime Minister Petrโ Fiala reportedly signed the letterโค outlining these demands, as reported by the Italian news agency โANSA โคonโ Friday. Czech Transport Minister Martin Kupkaโข statedโ Thursday that the Czech Republic โhad againโ raised the issue inโฃ Brussels, joined by Italy, โPoland, Slovakia, โand Bulgaria.โ
Separately, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has also appealed to European Commission President Ursula von โฃderโฃ Leyen, requesting that the 2035 deadline allow for โthe continued sale of “highly efficient internal combustion engines” andโ hybrid vehicles.
