Japan Mobilizes โขTroops as Bear โAttacks Surge
TOKYO – Japan has deployed troops to assist in controlling a rising number of bear attacks across theโ country, a rare move signaling the escalating severity of โฃthe situation. Theโ deployment comes as attacks become increasingly frequent in โขpopulated areas, including incidents at supermarkets, bus stops, and even โschools.
The surge in encounters โคis โคattributed to a combination of factors: a growing bear population, dwindling natural food โฃsources linked โขtoโ climate change, and the decline of a traditionally relied-uponโ hunter โworkforce. Last year โขsawโ a โplentiful food supply in the mountains leading to a high numberโข of cubs born, โbut this โyear’sโค scarcity is driving bears closer to human settlements.
Recent weeks โขhave seen a string โคof alarming incidents. Bears โhave โขattacked โcustomers in a โsupermarket, injured a tourist near a UNESCO World Heritage site, and maimed a worker at a โฃspa. Some schoolsโ have temporarily closed due to bear sightings on thier grounds. Bear โขattacks typically peak โinโข October โand November as the animals prepare for hibernation.
“Last year, there was plenty of โคfood in the mountains and many cubs were born. This year, the food supply has run out,” saidโ Kitakata of Kazuna.
Japanese black bears, found throughout โmoast ofโข Japan, can weigh up to 130 kg, while brown bears on Hokkaido can reach 400 kg.
This isn’t the first time Japan’s military has been called uponโ to manage wildlife.โฃ Troops previously provided aerial surveillance during aโ wild deer hunt roughly a decade ago and assisted with โขfur sealโค selection in the 1960s to protect fisheries.
The governmentโฃ is preparing a package of โฃemergency measures, to be announced this month, which includesโ recruiting more licensed โขhunters. In September, gun regulations were relaxed to facilitate bear hunting in urban areas.โค
“As bears continue to encroach on โpopulated areasโค in many regions and the numberโข of injuries from bear attacks increases every day, โwe โคcannot afford โขto delay taking action against bears,” Deputy Chief โCabinet secretary โฃKei Satoโ stated โคatโค a recent news conference.
