Sept 11 Attacks: What Happened, Flags at Half-Staff & Patriot Day

by David Harrison – Chief Editor September 12, 2025
written by David Harrison – Chief Editor

Flags at Half-Staff ‍Across New York State on Patriot Day

NEW YORK – ⁢ Flags across ‌New York State are flying at half-staff today,‍ september 11, 2025, in solemn remembrance of⁢ the⁤ nearly 3,000 lives lost in⁢ the⁣ terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The lowering of⁢ the flag⁢ is a longstanding tradition observed annually to honor the victims and heroes of that ‍tragic day, and to reaffirm a national commitment to unity and remembrance.

Twenty-four years after the ⁤attacks,⁣ Patriot ⁣Day remains a notable day of reflection for New Yorkers and the nation. While not a federal holiday – ⁣government⁣ offices‍ remain open and mail delivery continues – the day‌ is officially recognized through public law, encouraging remembrance activities, flag displays at half-staff, and ⁢moments of silence. This year’s‍ observance⁤ comes as‌ the nation continues ‍to grapple with issues of ⁢national‌ security⁣ and the enduring legacy of ⁢9/11.

In December 2001, Public ⁣Law ⁤107-89 was‍ enacted, officially‍ designating September 11th as Patriot Day.The law requests⁢ the⁢ President⁣ to⁢ issue a proclamation calling‍ for⁤ state and local governments to observe the‍ day⁢ with programs and activities, for ⁢the U.S. flag to be flown at half-staff in⁣ memory of those who perished, and for a moment of silence to be observed nationwide.

Further solidifying the day’s significance, Public Law ⁤111-13, ⁣passed in 2009, designated September 11th as the National ⁢Day of Service and Remembrance,⁢ encouraging⁤ Americans to honor‌ the victims through volunteerism and⁤ community service.

Fall Foliage in New Jersey: When to See Peak Colors

by Emma Walker – News Editor September 8, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

North Jersey Fall Foliage Expected to Peak Later This season, parks Offer Prime viewing

September ‍7, 2025 – North Jersey residents anticipating vibrant⁢ fall colors should prepare for a potentially delayed peak this year, according to recent reports. Weather conditions⁣ significantly ⁢influence the timing and intensity of⁣ fall foliage, with⁢ warm nights hindering ⁤the development ⁢of red and ⁢purple pigments. An early ⁤frost or freeze could⁣ prematurely end the color display, resulting in more browns or increased leaf‌ drop.

The color variations also depend on tree species, as each produces a ‌unique chemical balance. Some trees will display more red leaves, while others lean towards yellow or‌ orange.

For those eager to witness⁤ the spectacle,North Jersey offers numerous parks⁢ with ⁣trails and lookout points. NorthJersey.com previously⁢ highlighted several locations for optimal viewing:

Palisades Interstate park: ‌ Spanning ‌12 miles and 2,500 acres along the Hudson River, the ‍park features over 30 miles of trails.
High Point State park: Located within the⁣ Kittatinny Mountains, this 16,000-acre ‍park, home to the state’s⁤ highest elevation, provides ‌panoramic views extending into ⁣New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
Stokes State Forest: Also in the Kittatinny⁢ Mountains, Stokes state⁤ Forest encompasses⁤ more⁢ than 16,000 acres of forest, mountains, streams, and ⁢scenic views, with‌ over 63 miles of trails.
Hacklebarney State park: Offering a less strenuous experiance, Hacklebarney State Park covers 1,186 acres with 10 connecting trails, most under a mile in length and paved or gravel.
* Norvin green State ⁣Forest: Part of ⁣the Wyanokie Wilderness Area, Norvin Green⁢ State Forest spans 5,416 acres and provides miles of rugged terrain and diverse ‌vantage points.

An interactive fall foliage map ‌is available at https://smokymountains.com/fall-foliage-map for tracking color progression.

AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Paul Pastelok notes, “Warm nights can hinder ⁢the production of ‍anthocyanins, the pigments responsible for bright reds and purple color leaves.” He also⁤ cautions, “An early frost or freeze ⁢can stop the leaf’s⁢ ability to produce red and purple pigments or just ⁣end color of⁣ foliage (more browns or increase ⁤fallen⁢ leaves.)”

written by Emma Walker – News Editor

New Laws Signed: Foundation Anniversaries declared Special Working Days, Court Branches Added Nationwide

MANILA, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. recently signed into law a series of measures declaring special working days for local foundation anniversaries and authorizing the creation of additional court branches across the country. The signings, completed on August 29, aim to recognize notable local celebrations and address the growing need for judicial resources.

Three new laws-RA 12249, RA 12251, and a separate measure concerning bansalan, Davao del Sur-designate June 24th as a special working day in Balayan, Batangas, for its “Parada ng Lechon” festival; September 21st as a special working day in San Mateo, Rizal, for its foundation anniversary, also known as “Araw ng Bayan ng San Mateo”; and recognize the foundation anniversary of Bansalan, Davao del Sur. These designations allow for continued economic activity while acknowledging local traditions. areas currently designated as special working holidays can be converted to special nonworking holidays via presidential proclamation.

Alongside these commemorative laws, six measures were signed establishing additional court branches in Cebu, Cagayan Valley, and the Davao Region. RA 12029 mandates a Regional trial Court (RTC) in Moalboal, Cebu province. RA 12242 and RA 12243 authorize RTCs in Alicia, Isabela province, and Mati City, Davao Oriental, respectively. Additionally, RA 12244 will establish two Metropolitan Trial Courts (MTCs) in tagum City, Davao del Norte, and RA 12245 provides for two RTCs in Ilagan City and Tumauini, Isabela province.

The supreme Court will assign branch numbers for the new courts and, in coordination with the Department of Justice, will integrate them into the court system’s operational plan. The Supreme court will also issue implementing rules and regulations. Funding for the new judges, personnel, and court operations will be allocated through the annual General Appropriations Act.

The laws will take effect 15 days after publication in the Official Gazette or a newspaper of general circulation.
