The Washington Capitals team announced on Wednesday that veteran forward Nicklas Bäckström will take an indefinite leave of absence from hockey due to health reasons.

The 35-year-old Swede recorded one assist in the first eight games of the season. In the last one, he only started in January because of the hip joint surgery he underwent before it. He scored seven goals and 14 assists in 39 matches.

“Due to my injury situation, I have decided to take some time off from playing. This is a difficult decision, but one that I feel is right for my health,” declared Bäckström.

“I want to thank my teammates, the organization and the fans for their unwavering support throughout this process. At this time, I request privacy while I decide on my next steps and viable options for non-promotion.”

Bäckström has a valid contract with a cap-hit of 9.2 million US dollars until the end of next season.

Success in a New Job: Liam Kirk’s Impressive Start and Rise in the Extraliga Table

Third place in the table, you scored two goals yourself. That couldn’t have been a much better start to a new job, right?

So far so good. We have four wins and we are performing well. We all work hard. I’m enjoying the new competition. It’s a little different style for me, but I’m getting used to it. Extraliga is very high quality and balanced, anyone can beat anyone.

While Verva has been languishing at the lower levels of the table for the last few years, now thanks to your arrival, it is heading upwards.

Of course I like that. During the conversations with sports director Tomáš Vrábel, I felt that the team has high ambitions. I play to win. I wouldn’t go somewhere where the goal was just to save myself. I try to help you succeed.

You already have 26 shots on your account, the most in the entire extra league. Want to show off?

My role is to score goals. I’m an attacking player, I like to get chances. Power plays are working for us, maybe I will add more goals.

Did you acclimatize quickly in the new club?

I arrived in Litvínov just before the start of the extra league, but the cabin received me fantastically. Everyone treats me nicely. The language barrier is not a problem, we can get along just fine in English. And thanks to winning, the mood is great.

What are your first impressions of the city? Compared to Sheffield, where you grew up playing hockey, Litvínov is quite small.

Yes, but I come from a similar small town of Maltby, not far from Sheffield. It suits me not to be in the full bustle of the big city. I have everything I need in Litvínov. And interesting places are not far away. Lake Mosteck, Dresden, Teplice, and especially beautiful nature. Just a short drive and I’m alone in the wilderness.

Has your fiancée visited you yet?

Yes, she arrived last week, now my parents have also arrived to see me. They like it here too. My fiancee and I also went to Prague. Beautiful city, people were nice. I also tasted the famous Pilsner beer. It’s good, but not my favorite.

How difficult is it to live separately with your partner?

Of course it’s complicated. In recent years, we’ve actually only been visiting each other. She has a job in Sheffield. We want to build a house there, but for now it will be a nomadic hockey life. We are planning to get married next summer and then he will travel the world with me. I realize that he has to sacrifice a lot for me and I appreciate that. But she knows that hockey is my first love and a job that I adore. She liked it in the Czech Republic, so she definitely wouldn’t be angry if I stayed here.

In May, you can also play for Great Britain in the Czech Republic at the World Championship in the Prague group.

That’s a huge motivation. I’m especially happy that we got back to the elite division after just one year after being relegated. It would be nice to play the championship in Prague. Hopefully some fans from Britain will come too. And the Czech fans will certainly create a fantastic atmosphere. She is amazing in extralize. Drums and chants go non-stop.

Two years ago, you became the top scorer of the championship in Riga with seven goals. Is it even possible to repeat something like this, or is it a once-in-a-lifetime thing?

Well, we’ll see, it’s going to be complicated. But I’m an offensive player and in the national team I’m mainly wanted to score goals. So maybe I’ll fail there again.

At the same time, you started only in the third highest Swedish competition. How have you managed to make such progress since then?

There is a lot of work behind it. I have progressed as a player and as a person. The NHL draft motivated me even more. I proved to myself and to many doubters that I can play hockey at the highest level. I’m still only 23 years old and only in my third year playing hockey professionally.

That made you waste almost the entire first season on the Tucson farm.

It is true. I’ve always dreamed of the NHL, maybe I wasn’t that far away from it. I was getting a lot of space on the ice, but then I hurt my knee. But I think everything happens for a reason. The next year I didn’t feel wanted overseas. After all, it’s just business, they didn’t count on me anymore. Maybe in the future I’ll try to fight for the NHL, but right now I’m concentrating on Litvínov. I finally feel like I belong somewhere and I’m welcome there.

A boy from Britain probably doesn’t have it easy in the hockey environment.

Of course, it is not our number one sport. But I fell in love with hockey as a child and I knew that I would follow my own path and want to make a living from it. I really believed in myself even at that time, even though my friends were shooting at me. It was a long and difficult journey. When I was sixteen, no one believed that I would be drafted into the NHL. But I did it. Maybe I will be an inspiration for other British players.

How is hockey progressing on the Islands?

It definitely gets better every year. When I look at the competition and the players in it, I think it’s the best it’s ever been. Of course, we are still far from the elite leagues, but hopefully things will change.

Didn’t you try football when you were young?

A little yes, but I was a hoof. (laughs) While the others went digging for the barracks in the evening, I took my skates and went to practice in the winter.

In one of the interviews, you mentioned that your close friend is former football goalkeeper Petr Čech, who switched to hockey after his career. How did you meet?

I have to debunk this myth, I guess my answer got lost in translation. And my teammates keep making fun of me. (smiles) Petr Čech knows my good friend, who also plays for Oxford. Not with me personally. But it is true that Petr wrote to me after the transfer was announced. He wished me good luck with my new job in the Czech Republic and mentioned that there are great players and coaches here. It was nice of him. We’ve never met before but hopefully we’ll get lucky as I’m a big Chelsea fan.

Arizona Coyotes Place Forward Alex Galchenyuk on Unconditional Waiver, Contract Termination Under Investigation

The Arizona Coyotes placed forward Alex Galchenyuk on the unconditional waiver list with the goal of terminating his contract.

The move comes just 12 days after signing a one-year, two-way contract worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $225,000 at the minor league level. The club wrote in the announcement that it will not comment further on this move.

PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan reports that the NHL is investigating the matter. ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski claims the Coyotes made the move after learning of an “off-ice matter” they were unaware of at the time of the signing.

Galchenyuk will become an unrestricted free agent after being on the waiver list.

The 29-year-old American played 11 games for the Avalanche last season without earning a point. He played the next 42 games for the Eagles in the AHL. In them he collected 42 points (16+26). In the past, he also played for the Canadiens, Coyotes, Penguins, Wild, Senators and Maple Leafs.

“Latvia Secures Playoff Spot with Dramatic Win over Switzerland at Hockey World Cup 2023”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 24, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The victory of the Latvians over the hitherto 100 percent Swiss also decided the opponent of the Czech hockey players in the elimination battles. It will be the selection of the United States of America, which dominated Group A in Tampere without defeat.

The Latvians played a big drama against the Swiss after a goalless first period, in which they led twice, but then conceded a goal in the 54th minute to make it 2:3. At that moment, the Slovaks were celebrating. However, captain Kaspars Daugavinš equalized 70 seconds later. In extra time, another Rudolfs Balcers striker decided in the power play, who also scored two assists in the duel.

The Swiss saved some supports and started with only eleven attackers. The excited Latvians showed their determination right from the start and were more active both in terms of play and shooting, but Abols did not succeed in their chances. In the 13th minute, on the other hand, the Swiss locked their opponent in front of goalkeeper Šilovs for a long time, but the situation did not change.

At the start of the second period, Freibergs swept the upper corner of the goal with a shot from the blue line – also thanks to the obscured view of goalkeeper Van Pottelberghe – and celebrated the first World Cup goal in his career. Rihards Bukarts was pressured by Marti on the edge of the goal area, the Swiss resorted to a coach’s call due to his contact with the goalkeeper, but the goal was also confirmed by the video referees’ check.

The Latvians didn’t use the five-on-three power play for more than half a minute, and it must have been all the more regrettable when, in the 27th minute, he headed right after Fiala’s goal. Only 32 seconds had passed and Abols gave the Latvians a narrow lead, although the puck slipped off his stick as he tried to finish from close range. Soon after, the Swiss captain Haas had another quick answer on his stick, but Šilovs brilliantly covered the bluff into the backhand.

At the beginning of the third part, he missed from a good position during a completed power play by Ambühl. In the 45th minute, Jaks weakened the home team again and the Latvians paid for his foul. At the moment when he was already rushing to help his teammates in the defensive zone, Zile’s attempt from Riat landed on Miranda’s leg and the puck ended up in the goal.

In the 49th minute, Ločmelis, under pressure, made his way to the end, but his attempt was stopped by the crossbar. This was the start of an extremely exciting finish, during which the Slovaks, waiting for the result, experienced an emotional rollercoaster ride alongside the Latvians and their supporters.

In the 54th minute, Ambühl got a taste for himself, charging Fiala into an ideal position. Striker Corvi scored the third pass in the match. At that moment, Slovakia advanced to the playoffs.

But after Glauser’s mistake in blocking on the red line, the home team got into a two-on-one outnumbering, at the end of which Abols encouraged Daugavinš to score and he did not hesitate – 3:3. At the end of regular time, the Swiss still had chances to extend their winning streak, but they did not convert them.

In overtime, Richard fouled and Balcers cheered Latvians. At the World Cup, they defeated the Swiss after eight years, in 2015 they also celebrated thanks to a goal in extra time.

“Hockey World Cup: Czech national team dominates against Slovenia and looks forward to facing Norway”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 20, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The Czech national team struggled with the results for a while against Slovenia, but in the end, thanks to the cannonade in the final part of the game, they brought the duel to a winning end without any problems. Coach Kari Jalonen’s men will play the role of favorites against Norway. So far, they have four points on their account for a narrow win over Slovenia (1:0) and a defeat after separate raids against Kazakhstan.

Radan Lenc, who was subsequently called up, has already joined the Czech team, Karel Vejmelka is in goal.

HIT EXTRA TO THE HOCKEY WORLD CUP
The Sport.cz editorial team will offer fans regular studies before the matches of the Czech team during the hockey world championship. In the studio, a selected expert from among hockey personalities and the editor of Sport.cz will discuss the given match with the moderator. Studio Příklep extra will always start fifty minutes before the initial throw-in, and there will be discussions about breaks even after the end of the match.

The Americans will take on Denmark in the opening match of Group A on Saturday. The USA selection has four victories to its credit and is the favorite in the match, the Northerners are currently fourth with eight points, having collected points against the weakest participants in the group.

Even though Finland alternates good moments with bad moments at the championship, no one can deny the role of the clear favorite in the match against Austria for the Suomi selection. The Finns may have stumbled against the best teams in Group A, but they should be able to handle the battle with the outsider.

In group B, from 3:20 p.m., the clash of the two best teams so far will be on display. Although Switzerland scored 100% in their fourth appearance at the World Cup, they conceded the first two goals, but the fans are waiting to see how they will fare against strong Canada. So far, the overseas team has only one less point on their account, when they beat Slovakia only after separate raids.

In the evening from 19:20, in the Czech group, the hot Latvia will face Kazakhstan in a duel. The home team is the favorite in the derby of the “post-Soviet republics”, however, there is no need to doubt that the rival will be well motivated.

Saturday’s final match of Group A has a big favorite. The Swedes are expected to handle France. The northerners, who have collected eleven points so far, should bring the match to a winning end. But France will resist. Out of four matches at the World Cup, she lost only once after sixty minutes. Can he resist the choice of the Three Crowns?
