Kim Jin-sook Reflects on Labor Union Suppression and the Yellow Envelope Act

Kim Jin-sook, a leading member of the Busan headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, is being interviewed by the Hankyoreh at the Busan regional headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions in Busan on the 12th. Senior Reporter Chang-gwang Kang chang@hani.co.kr

It was through the power of solidarity that I got off the crane in 2011, and the Yellow Envelope Act was also created by citizens. But I think politicians and businesspeople have become more mean and vicious as we have developed.

Kim Joo-ik, former head of the Hanjin Heavy Industries (currently HJ Heavy Industries) branch of the Korean Metal Workers’ Union, committed suicide on Crane No. 85 at the shipyard in Yeongdo-gu, Busan, complaining of the pain of the company’s union suppression and provisional seizure following an outrageous claim for damages. It was the 17th of the month. And eight years later, Kim Jin-sook, a leadership member of the Busan regional headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, climbed again on the 85th crane that Kim Joo-ik had climbed. Numerous citizens came to Crane to cheer on Leader Kim on the ‘Hope Bus’, which raised awareness of the issue of forfeiture of boats that oppressed labor union activities for the 309 days he endured. Nevertheless, 20 years after Kim Joo-ik’s death, the Yellow Envelope Act (Amendment to Articles 2 and 3 of the Trade Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act), which aims to prevent companies from indiscriminately filing damages lawsuits for industrial action, has not yet passed the National Assembly. On the 12th, I met leader Kim at the Busan headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and heard a story about Kim Joo-ik and the Yellow Envelope Act. Leader Kim is nicknamed ‘Kim Ji-do’ among the members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions. Kim Ji-do first met Kim Ju-ik in 1987. He was tall enough to recognize Kim Joo-ik even from a distance. When Kim Ju-ik was on a high-altitude protest for 129 days, Kim Ji-do, who was blocked from entering the factory, would go to the yard of a small temple on a mountain road near the factory and look at Crane No. 85. “Because the temple is located high up, the location was like a crane. You can see Joo-ik walking back and forth on the crane in his work clothes from afar. Because he is such a big person. Then it seemed like he was saying something to me. What Jooik wants to say, what I want to hear… .” Eight years later, when Kim Ji-do climbed onto the 85th crane and entered the cockpit, he was reminded of that tall stature again. “How did that big man live here? He said the first thought that came to his mind was “129 days?” It was so narrow that even when Kim Ji-do lay down, his head and toes touched the cold iron wall of the crane. My heart ached as I remembered Kim Joo-ik, who had been squatting in that cockpit for 129 days. “At that time, I felt devastated and very sorry. Mr. Joo-ik called me the day before he died. But I didn’t answer the call. The situation was obvious, but I didn’t know what to say. “It took a really long time for that bell to ring.” The provisional seizure of the boat harassed Kim Joo-ik in a vicious way. The last salary Kim Joo-ik received, whose house was also provisionally seized at the time, was a total of 1.65 million won. After deducting taxes and provisional seizures of 730,000 won, his actual income was 135,080 won, excluding deductions. The money wouldn’t even have been enough to buy Heely’s sneakers, which he promised his children would get when they got off the crane. At that time, Hanjin Heavy Industries sent a communication to 180 union members regarding the union’s strike, pressuring them to file a claim for damages worth 15 billion won. Kim Ji-do said that the provisional seizure of labor unions is a vicious system that destroys not only the parties involved but also their entire families. Kim Ji-do said, “Before, if you went on strike, you would be arrested and fired, but not anymore. “Because there is a more murderous weapon called lien seizure,” he said. “The whole family is ruined, the children’s school fees and milk costs have to be cut off, and the children have to buy used clothes. But even if you do that for the rest of your life, you won’t be able to repay it.” Less than two weeks after Kim Joo-ik’s death, Kwak Jae-gyu, who was mourning his death, also jumped from the dock next to the crane. Nine years later, Choi Kang-seo, deputy director of the Hanjin Heavy Industries branch, committed suicide, unable to overcome the weight of the 15.8 billion won loss. The weapon called Sonbaega Seizure that led to their deaths is still alive. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (now Hanwha Ocean) subcontractors who went on strike last year shouting, ‘We can’t live like this, can we?’ were hit with a lawsuit for 47 billion won in damages.

Kim Joo-ik, former head of the Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction labor union, committed suicide on October 17, 2003, 129 days after entering a high-altitude sit-in protest, claiming 1.8 billion won in damages, withdrawal of provisional seizure, and reinstatement of fired workers. The photo shows a protest procession in Busan in memory of former Chairman Kim. Hankyoreh data.

“Even when Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering subcontractors who worked at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering talk about it, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering just turns their backs and says it’s not their business. I think this system that legally recognizes the avoidance of responsibility is really wrong. So, they use seizure as a weapon… . If this is the case, workers will live in poverty their whole lives, and there is really no way to escape that poverty. Because it made it impossible to escape the tedious cycle of subcontracting. “We need to get rid of this ridiculous structure and hold the main office accountable. This is common sense.” The Yellow Envelope Act, which restricts indiscriminate provisional seizures and expands the bargaining rights of subcontracted workers, has been referred to the plenary session of the National Assembly, but it is still unclear whether it will pass as the ruling and opposition parties postpone its submission. Kim Ji-do said, “The Yellow Bag Act was already created through the consent of citizens from its inception. “I think we just need to discuss how to refine this and establish it, but we are working on a social agreement or an agreement between the ruling and opposition parties,” he said. “The fact that no small bill related to worker issues is allowed shows that everything revolves around companies anyway. “It’s about who this society revolves around,” he said. “It is no exaggeration to say that the deaths of those colleagues defined my independence. Actually, there are times when I want to run away. But it seems like those people were just protecting it every time. Because of the guilt at that time, the promises, etc… .” Kim Ji-do’s 37 years of life as a laid-off worker have been filled with guilt over the deaths of his colleagues and a promise to create the world they wanted to live in. So Kim Ji-do said he hoped no more workers would die. However, even after the Yoon Seok-yeol administration took office, construction worker Yang Hoe-dong and taxi worker Bang Bang-hwan set themselves on fire. The government’s refusal to budge in the face of these heavy deaths once again felt cruel. “This is the same country as the will of Jeon Tae-il, who died in 1970, and the will of Kim Joo-ik, who skipped a century ago in 2003. The will of Bae Dal-ho of Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction and the will of Joo-ik Kim of Hanjin Heavy Industries, which skipped the region, are from the same country. “This is a country where Cho Soo-won, who was protesting at the Democratic Party headquarters, and Kim Joo-ik, who was protesting on top of a crane, ended their lives in the same way.” This sentence that Kim Ji-do recited in Kim Joo-ik’s memorial address 20 years ago touched the hearts of many people. Now, 20 years later, Kim Ji-do evaluated it as a “society that has become more vicious.” Kim Ji-do said, “I think workers and civil society have really developed a lot. “It was through the power of solidarity that I got off the crane in 2011, and the yellow envelope law was also created by citizens,” he said. “But I think politicians and businessmen have become more mean and vicious as we have developed.” “Still, I don’t think this type of control will last long. I hope the workers hold on. I hope I don’t die anymore. Accidental or intentional… “I hope there will be no deaths other than natural causes.” Kim Ji-do, who underwent cancer surgery in 2018 and continued treatment, underwent reoperation in 2020 when the cancer recurred while he was fighting to return to work. He is now focusing on treating the aftereffects of surgery. He, who goes to more than four medical departments, laughed and said, “I’m trying to be good to my body, but I don’t know how because I’ve never tried it before.” “The site (which I looked around after reinstatement) was still just rusty, and there was such a sense of loneliness with no people around. I imagine that kind of thing once in a while. We eat together at that site, work together, and just smile when we pass by together, and I think it would be great if we could do that. But those people aren’t there, and I’m old… That’s right.” Reporter Jang Hyeon-eun mix@hani.co.kr

A Heartfelt Letter from a Mother to Her Beloved Daughter, Sunbin: Remembering a Tragic Loss and Seeking Answers

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 15, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

We deliver the full letter written by her mother, Ms. Jeon, to Ms. Park Seon-bin, who lost her life in a serious disaster at SPL. The letter was sent on October 15, the anniversary of Sunbin’s death, through the ‘Letter to Heaven mailbox’ at a memorial park in Cheonan where Sunbin’s remains are located. My daughter Sunbin, my beloved better half! It will be a year in just a few days since her daughter left us. A day that cannot and should not be forgotten for the rest of our lives. October 15, 2022, 6:20 am. Before that, our circumstances were a bit difficult and we had some minor family circumstances that others didn’t know about, and we spent our daily lives comforting ourselves with the thought that it was normal for everyone to live like that. But one day, out of the blue, something happened… … Even now, the memories of that day are so vivid… … She receives a phone call saying something incredulous, but “Hye-yeon is your mother, right?” I can’t believe the absurd statement, “I think you need to come to the office quickly due to a personnel incident.” But you received a phone call early in the morning, hurriedly woke up your younger brother, took a taxi, and went to the SPL where you used to go. Not knowing what happened, you felt anxious, nervous, sad, etc. All the ominous emotions came rushing in at once, so I couldn’t even tell the driver my destination properly. The place where I took you to work a few times. When we arrived at the company, the police officers and employees were hurriedly trying to take my mother and younger brother to the scene. One police officer said, “The accident scene is too cruel to go in,” so my mother could only sit down in the security room and cry. Like a fool… Even if I insisted, I should have gone to the site in person… That way, Sunbin can understand how difficult conditions you had to work under, why she had to go through a personnel accident, and she should have said her final goodbyes. Even now, it only makes me think that my mother was so foolish and irresponsible for accepting that situation as it was. No one could have imagined that an accident like this would happen. We thought it was just someone else’s story that we only saw in the media, but it became reality to us. Sunbin, your accident was predicted. It was only after the accident that I found out that it was a company with a lot of problems, and this foolish mother made a huge and ridiculous mistake by believing that she was a large company and even congratulating her on your joining the company. But why did you have to become the victim? Her pain and sadness are making it harder for her mother because she can’t find the answer. If the reward for working so hard is death, who would want to work and risk death? So, I think this may be the reason young people these days don’t do hard work. Not long ago, the same accident happened again at the same affiliate. After 10 months. At the time of your accident, the SPC chairman decided to invest 100 billion won in safety management under the pretext of a public apology, but accidents are repeated again… When I was interviewed by a reporter from the Hankyoreh on the last day my mother let you go, she said, “I hope this is the last time for my daughter,” but I don’t know how she can only do that. The world has become one where it is difficult to even trust oneself, who to trust and what judgment to make. I wonder if it can be solved. ‘Seonbin! ‘I’m so sorry, thankful, and love you for leaving us so suddenly after going through so much hardship as a mother’s daughter.’ You should have at least said something… … I am left with so much resentment. Also, how scary and painful was it alone at the time of the accident? I couldn’t understand why I had to take on such difficult tasks alone, and it made me think of the things you used to say. ‘The ladies I work with only order for themselves… ‘ Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it’s not hard, but I respect you so much for persevering through it and working, but I also feel sorry for you. Even though I told him dozens of times that it was hard, and even though I told him to quit several times… The mother becomes guilty once again for not being able to force her to quit more forcefully. My daughter Hyeyeon, the prettiest girl in the world! Her mother was so happy that you were born, it was her joy itself. When she was young, she was the kind of person who washed away the hardships with her cuteness, was the driving force of her mother’s life, had a variety of expressions, and laughed a lot. She was the prettiest daughter in the world. As I grew up, I helped her family a lot and things were gradually getting better. I would tell her mom about my worries, go shopping with her, and go to the market together. Every time she did that, people would envy her, saying they were like sisters. I was like that… … My mom also thought this way. She said that if she hadn’t changed her name… What if she hadn’t done it… etc… She kept adding meaning to what if. That’s how hard it is to accept reality. Because we can say that we are true friends rather than mother and daughter, even when we were friendly and when we fought. How can I live my daily life comfortably when my precious other half, who was with me through everything, is gone. Surviving day after day with the feeling that every action I make is a sin against my daughter Sunbin is pain itself. Everyone says it gets better with time, but on the contrary, it gets more and more difficult as time goes by. I want to see more. I still desperately want to believe it’s a dream. daughter!! After spending 24 years together, I feel once again how big the empty space is for you. These are albums from my childhood that I haven’t even put together (a whopping 4 large ones), pictures you made with great skill, and traces of you are all over the place, but you, my daughter, are not here. I feel like it will come back someday, so I can’t throw it away or get rid of it. Without these, I feel like all the memories I had with you will disappear. I want to keep her mother by my side as long as she lives. My beloved daughter Sunbin!! I was so thankful for being born as my mother’s daughter, I was sorry for not being able to give her as much love, I was even more sorry for not being able to raise her in a good environment and making her live in despair, and I was most sorry for making you feel guilty for not being able to show me a happy side. But I was so thankful that I did my best to live brightly and courageously. If Seonbin were with us now, she would have lived a happier life… Since you are always in Mommy’s heart, Sunbin should just play in a comfortable place, do the things you like, and live happily while waiting for the day when you can meet her mother. I miss you so much, I love you so much, and I’m so, so sorry. Goodbye until the day we meet!! -A mother who loves her daughter Sunbin (Hye-yeon) the most in the world-

Israel Launches Full-Scale Operation in Gaza as Iran Hints at Intervention

On the 14th (local time), Israel declared a full-scale operation to destroy Hamas jointly with the army, navy, and air force, as the deadline for evacuation safety provided to residents of the northern Gaza Strip expired. Iran hinted at the possibility of intervening in the conflict, saying that if Israel does not stop its attacks, the situation will spiral out of control. If Iran begins to speak out in earnest, the war between Israel and Hamas may spread into an ‘international war’ that will shake the entire Middle East. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a statement on its website this afternoon, saying that it had begun preparations for a joint attack on the northern part of the Gaza Strip with the army, navy, and air force. “Soldiers are preparing for the next phase of the war, which will focus on critical ground operations,” the Israeli military said, adding that the offensive would include air, sea and land attacks. The military said the operation would take place in a “wide-spread combat area,” but did not provide details, including when the ground battle would begin. The Israeli military pledged to completely destroy Hamas’ administrative and military organizations in Gaza City, the largest city in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military’s announcement came after the evacuation deadline given to residents of the northern Gaza Strip expired. The Israeli military notified 1.1 million residents of the northern Gaza Strip to evacuate to the south on the night of the 11th, and announced that it would guarantee the safety of two evacuation routes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the 14th. In response, Hamas told residents not to evacuate, saying the evacuation route proposed by the Israeli military was unsafe. In fact, on the 13th, an incident occurred in which about 70 residents who had sought refuge were bombed and killed on Salalah al-Din Road, one of the two evacuation routes that the Israeli military said would guarantee safety. Hamas claimed that Israeli forces bombed a road crowded with evacuation vehicles. Local human rights group Al-Haq and the British BBC announced that they confirmed that the claim that the bombing occurred on a road that Israel had guaranteed safety was true through analysis of photos posted on social media. As confusion intensified, as many as 1.1 million residents found themselves in an extreme situation where they were stranded. In this process, concerns about additional casualties are growing. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement on the 13th, “It is extremely dangerous and virtually impossible for more than 1 million people to move through densely populated areas without food or water while the entire border is under siege.” The World Health Organization (WHO) also warned that demanding evacuation for newborns and patients receiving intensive care in hospitals in northern Gaza was “tantamount to a death sentence.” Since the 7th, 3,500 people have died over the past 8 days, including 2,200 in the Gaza Strip and 1,300 in Israel. The United Nations announced on the 14th that as of now, the number of refugees in the Gaza Strip has reached 1 million. As the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip intensified, Iran, which has supported Hamas, appeared to intervene in earnest, warning Israel to stop its attacks. Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations warned in a post on the social media platform On the same day, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian met with UN Special Envoy for Middle East Peace Tor Benesland in Beirut, Lebanon, and stated that Iran would have no choice but to intervene if Israel continues its attacks on the Gaza Strip, American internet media outlet Axios reported.

Gaza Strip Israel Egypt

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran, bombed Israeli positions in the Sheba region in northern Israel on this day with precision guided missiles. The Israeli army also attacked southern Lebanon with tanks and artillery to prevent Hezbollah from infiltrating the border. The damage to journalists is also intensifying. On the night of the 13th, Issam Abdallah, a video reporter for Reuters who was reporting from the southern border area of Lebanon, died, and a total of six people, including journalists from Reuters and AFP and Al-Jarirah, were injured. Chahi Hanegbi, security adviser to the Israeli Prime Minister, warned Hezbollah not to get involved in the conflict, saying that Israel is trying not to get caught up in the two front lines between the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. U.S. President Joe Biden had a series of phone calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and discussed humanitarian support plans for the residents of the Gaza Strip. Relief supplies from the international community are arriving one after another in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, but there has yet to be an agreement on how to deliver the aid to the residents of the Gaza Strip. The border between the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip is controlled by the Egyptian government, but aid can only be delivered across the border with Israel’s consent, according to a 2007 agreement between the two countries. Egypt is not breaking its opposition to the issue of opening an ‘Indian corridor’ through its border and accepting refugees from the Gaza Strip. Senior Reporter Shin Ki-seop marishin@hani.co.kr

The Middle East Conflict: The Forgotten Reality of the Palestine Conflict

Has the Middle East gone back to the past? Rather, was the reality that was hidden and wanted to be revealed? Is it a thing of the past or a hidden reality that the Palestine conflict is the core of the Middle East conflict and that the Middle East cannot be peaceful without its resolution? The Israel-Hamas war, which began with an all-out attack by Palestinian Hamas on the 7th, is asking us this. This incident showed how fragile the new regional order in the Middle East was, which became visible when Israel established diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain through the mediation of the United States on September 15, 2020. The Treaty of Abraham, named after Abraham, the common ancestor of Jews and Arabs, was an ambitious project to create a new order in the Middle East by completely normalizing relations between Israel and Arab countries. Diplomatic ties were established between Israel and Morocco in December 2020, and between Israel and Sudan in January 2021.

Israel-Saudi diplomatic ties ‘sudden brake’

The highlight of the Treaty of Abraham is the establishment of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel, which claim to be the suzerain of the Islamic world, and this has recently made rapid progress. Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, said in an interview with Fox News in the U.S. on September 20, “(The two countries) are getting closer every day. “It seems serious for the first time,” he said. “It is the largest historic transaction since the end of the Cold War.” The Abraham Treaty, promoted by the former US administration of Donald Trump, was initially aimed at establishing diplomatic relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, and this is a large-scale event that will change the geopolitics of the Middle East. The Treaty of Abraham emerged from the context of the Middle East conflict, which began with Iran’s Islamic Revolution (1979) and was completely changed by the US Iraq War (2003-2011). Since then, the structure of the Middle East conflict has changed into a confrontation between Saudi-centered Sunni Arab forces and Iran-led Shiite solidarity. Initially, the main axis of the post-war conflict in the Middle East was the Palestine conflict, which arose when Israel was established on the land of Palestine in 1948. Arab countries, including Israel and Egypt, fought four wars until 1973. After that, Israel and Egypt, which had no choice but to recognize each other, established diplomatic relations in 1979. At that time, the Islamic Revolution broke out in Iran. Iran, which transformed into a Shia Islamic republic, withdrew from the US alliance and threatened Sunni conservative monarchies, including Saudi Arabia. Also, Islamism swept the Arab public instead of Arab nationalism. When Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq, which had been keeping Iran in check, fell due to the U.S. war on Iraq, Saudi Arabia and other Sunni conservative monarchies had no choice but to deal directly with Iran. The Middle East has been reorganized into a confrontation between the Shiite solidarity of Iran, Syria’s Bashar Assad regime, Lebanon’s Shiite armed faction Hezbollah, and Palestine’s Hamas versus the Sunni Arab countries centered on Saudi Arabia. The reason why the Sunni Palestinian Hamas joined the Shia alliance is because of Palestine’s isolation and division. After the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Egypt and the Iranian revolution, Palestine was forgotten. In 1987, the Intifada (popular uprising) broke out in Palestine, leading to the rise of Hamas, an Islamist force. The international community resumed peace negotiations in Palestine, and in September 1993, the Oslo Agreement, which promised an independent state for Palestine, was signed between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) through the mediation of the United States. However, the Oslo Agreement to establish a Palestinian state in Gaza and the West Bank became a piece of paper. The Palestine Liberation Organization, which negotiated with Israel, formed a superficial autonomous government in the West Bank, and Hamas, which denied Israel, established a nest in Gaza.

The Palestine conflict is forgotten and only used as a bargaining chip.

Smoke is rising from the Gaza Strip due to an Israeli airstrike on the 12th (local time). AFP Yonhap News

In 2005, Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza and shifted its policy to blockading Gaza. It is a policy that confines the Palestinian conflict to Gaza. Arab countries, including Egypt, also did not recognize Hamas. Israel’s main enemies, Iran and solidarity forces, reached out to Hamas in Gaza. Since 2006, conflict has continued in Gaza for 17 years, including four wars during which Israel invaded. 3,500 people died and 15,000 were injured. Gaza, half the size of Seoul and with 2.2 million people living under lockdown, was a prison without bars, an open-air prison, the largest prison in the world. Yet the West, Arab countries, and Israel acted as if there was no conflict in Palestine. This was also because conflict and war did not escape Gaza during the blockade. The Trump administration, which took office in 2018, again abolished the international nuclear agreement with Iran and strengthened its alliance with Sunni countries such as Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has also now considered joining hands with Israel to keep Iran in check. This was promoted through the Treaty of Abraham. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Muhammad proposed resolving the Palestinian issue as a condition for establishing diplomatic relations with Israel, but used it as a card to win something else from the United States and Israel. Iran restored diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia last March through China’s mediation, but the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia was a threat to its security. The United States promises security guarantees to Saudi Arabia, and once diplomatic relations are established, Israel will be able to threaten Iran without hesitation. In April, a Hamas delegation met with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut, Lebanon, and discussed bilateral cooperation as an “axis of resistance” against Israel. At the end of August, Salih Aruri, Hamas’ second-in-command, pointed out Israel’s provocations against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem since the inauguration of Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right Israeli regime in an interview with the Lebanese media, saying, “We are preparing for an all-out war.” “We are discussing the prospects for this war closely with all parties involved,” he said. Hamas leader Ismail Haniya said in a broadcast on the 7th attacking Israel, “An entity that cannot even protect itself in the face of resistance cannot provide any security guarantee. “All the normalization agreements you (Arab countries) signed with them do not resolve the (Palestinian) conflict,” he said. This means that even if diplomatic relations are established with Israel, which is under attack by Hamas, the conflict in the Middle East will not end. Efforts for peace in the Middle East that exclude Palestine are bound to be futile. Israel announced on the 12th that it would completely cut off electricity, gas, and water to Gaza until the Israeli hostages taken by Hamas are released. Furthermore, Israel must swallow Gaza, which is ‘a stone heated by fire.’ The cost of ignoring Palestine so far will not only be felt by Israel, but also by the Middle East and the world as a whole. Senior Reporter Jeong Eui-gil Egil@hani.co.kr writes in the international field for the Hankyoreh. While he was writing for newspapers, he also published books such as ‘The Birth of an Islamic Warrior’ and ‘Prisoners of Geopolitics’.

Rising Trend of Cardiovascular Disease in Korea: Implications and Prevention Strategies

In Korea, the number one cause of death is cancer, but in the West, cardiovascular disease has long been the highest cause. In Korea, where lifestyle diseases that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, are gradually increasing, it is predicted that heart disease will soon become the number one cause of death. In Korea, the number of cardiovascular diseases caused by narrowing (angina) or blockage (myocardial infarction) of the so-called coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle is increasing significantly. According to data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the number of patients visiting hospitals with angina, which causes sudden pain or discomfort in the chest and difficulty breathing due to narrowing of the coronary arteries, exceeded 700,000 for the first time in 2021. If there is a problem with the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle, the heart does not work properly and cannot send blood to all parts of the body. In particular, if blood is not supplied to important tissues such as the brain, it can lead to coma or death. Looking at recent trends in the occurrence of cardiovascular disease, the risk of developing it increases with age, with more men than women. To prevent angina and maintain cardiovascular health, regular exercise, appropriate weight management, smoking cessation, and stress management are essential. In particular, if you have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, you should manage it more thoroughly.

Women need to be careful after menopause

The number of angina patients increased by 25% in five years, from 645,000 in 2017 to 704,000 in 2021. The number of patients decreased slightly in 2020, which is believed to be due to a decrease in hospital visits due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In terms of gender, male patients accounted for 60% as of 2021. By age, more than 9 out of 10 angina patients were over 50 years old for both men and women. Among men, the share of patients with angina pectoris was 18.4% in their 50s, but the highest rate was recorded in those in their 60s at 34.1%. Those in their 70s also accounted for more than those in their 50s at 27.8%. Women had more patients at a later age than men. The share of patients in their 50s remained at 11.6%, but those in their 60s and 70s recorded 28.6% and 32.8%, respectively. There were more female patients than male patients in their 70s. Female hormones are cited as the reason why women develop angina later than men. Female hormones, which are secreted in large quantities before menopause, reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The share of cardiovascular disease in women is about 15% in those in their 40s and 50s, but it accounts for 82% in those in their 60s or older. Female hormones reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease until the age of 40, but this effect is presumed to disappear as secretion decreases significantly with menopause. This is why, in the case of women, lifestyle management to prevent angina is more necessary before and after menopause. There are three main reasons why angina, a narrowing of the coronary artery, or myocardial infarction, which is completely blocked, occurs. First, this is a case where arteriosclerosis appears in the coronary arteries. This is a case where blood vessels are chronically narrowed due to various risk factors that can cause arteries to narrow, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, for a long time. This type of angina is called ‘stable’ type. Although the cause and countermeasures can be identified to some extent, in angina caused by arteriosclerosis, not only the coronary arteries but also other blood vessels can be at risk. Second, it is ‘unstable’ angina, in which a blood clot forms and suddenly blocks part of the coronary artery. Third, it occurs due to blood flow disorders rather than structural problems in blood vessels, which is called ‘variant’ angina. Whatever the cause, blood flow in the coronary arteries is interrupted and blood is not supplied properly to the heart muscle, causing chest pain. The pain may spread to the left shoulder or arm. In particular, when you move your body, such as exercising, your heart muscle needs more blood, so symptoms may appear more often. The same goes for when you experience sudden stress. Unlike general pain, chest pain is often expressed as ‘pain as if it is being squeezed.’ Some people say, ‘I feel like my chest is full,’ ‘I can’t digest my food,’ or ‘my solar plexus or the tip of my chin hurts.’ Men tend to complain of the classic symptom of ‘squeezing pain’ more than women, and women often complain of anxiety, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing. Even if you are elderly or have diabetes, you may complain of symptoms other than chest pain, such as feeling like you cannot digest food, or may not show any symptoms at all.

If you experience chest pain for more than 30 minutes, go to the hospital.

In most cases, chest pain from angina goes away within 5 minutes. If you experience chest pain due to insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle while exercising, you will stop exercising. When exercising, the amount of blood needed for the heart muscle returns to its original state and the pain is relieved. Pain from angina usually does not last longer than 30 minutes. Treatment of angina includes treatment of various lifestyle diseases that increase the risk of developing angina, as well as drug treatment that prevents blood clots from forming or dilates blood vessels. Additionally, you may need surgical treatment to insert a stent to widen narrowed blood vessels. But myocardial infarction is different. At this time, the coronary artery is completely blocked and blood is not supplied to the heart muscle, so chest pain continues. Even if you suffer from angina or not, if chest pain continues for more than 30 minutes, you should suspect the possibility of a myocardial infarction. In the case of myocardial infarction, treatment to open blocked blood vessels must be received within 6 hours. If this time is exceeded, not only the heart muscle but also other tissues such as the brain will be damaged, leading to death or falling into a coma, and even if one wakes up, severe aftereffects may remain. The first risk factor for heart disease is old age, and if a family member has experience with heart disease, the likelihood of developing heart disease increases. Representative bad habits include smoking and lack of exercise, and high blood pressure and diabetes also increase the risk of developing the disease. The same goes for obesity. To prevent heart disease, you should exercise regularly at least three times a week for more than 30 minutes at a time, and reduce high-calorie and salty foods to manage your weight. Eating fish and fresh fruit is recommended because it can improve cholesterol levels. It is said that one or two glasses of alcohol can help prevent heart disease, but recently there has been a lot of controversy over its effectiveness. Even small amounts of alcohol increase the risk of developing other diseases, so it should be moderated. Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, is attending the first trial in the Daejang-dong and Wirye New Town case on suspicion of preferential treatment held at the Central District Court in Seocho-gu, Seoul on the morning of the 6th. yunhap news

Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, was handed over to trial in connection with suspicions of preferential treatment for the development of Baekhyeon-dong. This is the third indictment since last year’s presidential election. However, investigations related to CEO Lee are not decreasing. The prosecution reorganized the investigation team to look again at whether CEO Lee tolerated his spouse’s personal use of corporate credit cards while serving as governor of Gyeonggi Province. The investigation into the report on the ‘suspicion of tampering with Prosecutor Yoon Seok-yeol’s investigation’, which took place just before the presidential election, is also directed at those around Representative Lee. According to the Hankyoreh coverage on the 12th, the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office has formed a ‘dedicated investigation team’ to investigate Representative Lee under the newly appointed 2nd Deputy Chief Prosecutor Lee Jeong-seop, following the recent reshuffle of the High Prosecutors’ Office level (Deputy Chief and Deputy Chief). An official from the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office explained, “In order to efficiently proceed with the investigation related to Representative Lee, which was previously led by the 6th Criminal Division, we will reassign the case to each department, and the deputy chief prosecutor will serve as the team leader with overall responsibility.” The dedicated investigation team is largely divided into three parts. Detective Division 6 looks into suspicions related to former Gyeonggi Province Vice Governor Lee Hwa-young’s receipt of illegal political funds, while the Defense Business and Industrial Technology Crime Investigation Department is dedicated to investigating suspicions of Ssangbangwool Group’s remittances to North Korea. The Public Investigation Department plans to look into the suspicions that Representative Lee’s spouse, Kim Hye-kyung, condoned the personal use of corporate cards while he was governor of Gyeonggi Province. This is because the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission recently transferred CEO Lee’s related charges to the prosecution, saying ‘there is a need to investigate’. The suspicion was previously investigated by the police once and the case was not forwarded (the charges were terminated). Police Commissioner Yoon Hee-geun was asked a related question at the National Assembly Public Administration and Security Committee audit held at the National Police Agency on this day and said, “At the time, the (police) investigation team judged (not guilty) by comprehensively not only the statement of the public interest informant but also the results of search and seizure or communication investigation.” The investigation into the report on the ‘suspicion of tampering with Prosecutor Yoon Seok-yeol’s investigation’, which took place just before the presidential election, is also targeting those around Representative Lee. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office investigation team in charge of the related investigation searched and seized the aide of Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Byeong-wook, a party policy researcher, and a media reporter the day before on charges of defaming President Yoon (violation of the Information and Communications Network Act). Representative Kim was a member of Representative Lee’s closest group. He is a member of the ‘7-member group’. In addition, the prosecution is investigating and booked CEO Lee on charges of breach of trust under the Aggravated Punishment Act for Specific Economic Crimes in connection with the ‘suspicion of preferential treatment for the development of a hotel in Jeongja-dong’. On this morning, the 3rd Anti-Corruption Investigation Division of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office (Director Kim Yong-sik) filed a lawsuit against CEO Lee and Jeong Jin-sang on charges of causing 20 billion won in damage to Seongnam Urban Development Corporation by giving preferential treatment to a specific company during the Baekhyeon-dong development process (breach of trust under the Aggravated Punishment Act for Specific Economic Crimes). The former head of the political affairs coordination office of the Democratic Party leader’s office (then policy aide to Seongnam City) was indicted without detention. The prosecution submitted these cases to trial and applied to the court to merge them with the existing Daejangdong and Wirye cases. The Seoul Central District Court plans to assign the cases indicted by the prosecution to the 33rd Criminal Settlement Division (Presiding Judge Kim Dong-hyeon), which is in charge of the Daejang-dong and Wirye cases, to determine whether to merge them. The position is that they will continue to investigate Representative Lee’s charges of instigation of perjury in the Public Official Election Act trial and suspicions of Ssangbangwool sending money to North Korea (third-party bribery charges).
