Investingโฃ in Earlyโข Life: A Key for a More Productive Guatemala
In theโฃ departments of Alta โVerapaz, Chiquimula, Huehuetenango, โQuichรฉ, Sanโ Marcos,โข Sololรก โคand Totonicapรกn – regions facingโ meaningfulโ poverty – dedicated health personnel, midwives, social workers, educators, and nutritionists are prioritizing interventions during โคthe โcritical frist two years of life, a period crucial for child development. central โto these efforts is “Crecer Sano” (Growingโข Grow), a Guatemalan goverment initiative supported by the World Bank, aimedโค at improving โฃchild nutrition indicatorsโ nationwide.
The โprogram emphasizesโค the importance of early feeding practices,โฃ beginning with exclusive breastfeeding. “We start with the child’s feeding fromโ dayโ one of โlife – with exclusive breastfeeding during the first 6 months. โฃit is of the utmost importance and โขit is the only food that โtheโค child needs inโฃ that period,” explainsโ Yoselinโ Mendoza, a nutritionist at the Potreroโค Viejo III health postโฃ in Quichรฉ. She highlights the benefits, stating, “Breastfeeding is always available, it has no cost. It providesโ vitamins, minerals and isโ the best for the child.” Mendoza notes positive trends, observing, “Fortunately, โขin the communities โthatโ we attend, I would dare to say that most mothers provide breastfeeding. We have first-time mothers, and โothersโค with several children and have beenโค able to โขgive breast milk withoutโค difficulty.”
These โefforts are yieldingโค measurable results. A survey conducted โคin 2024โค revealed that 70%โค of children inโ the seven departments participating โin the program received exclusive โคbreastfeeding during โtheir firstโ six months, exceedingโ the project’s goal ofโ 65% and representing a โsignificantโ improvement over the 59.4% recorded in โข2022.
The impact of this education is feltโข directly within โคcommunities. Laura Guarcas, a mother from Sicรกs II, shares, “they teach us to give breast milk, and as โคthe โnurses say, if we do not give them milk – then – they do not grow healthy, and โbecome weak.”
Beyond breastfeeding โpromotion, the โ”Crecer Sano” project focuses on consistent โmonitoring of child growth. “We monitor the growth of children under 2 years on โaโ monthly โฃmanner,”โ says Mendoza.”We focus on the firstโ 2 years of lifeโฆ if thisโฃ child reaches โits maximum development, its growth willโค be much โmore โขappropriateโฆ and will less affect โฃrespiratory and โขdiarrheal diseases that stopโค their development and directly impact their nutrition.”
This monitoring โคbeginsโค even โฃbefore birth. Sara Pacajoj, a nursing assistant, explains,โ “Sinceโ the โwoman is pregnant, we started control soโข that her baby has โan โappropriate weight and size at birth. If we detectโค low weight,we guide theโ motherโฃ about how โฃher diet should be.”
Verรณnica Orozco, coordinator of the Municipal District of Health of โขzacualpa, underscoresโ the long-term consequences of addressing โคmalnutrition early. “Chronic malnutrition affects psychomotor development and nervous systemโฆ which โฃleads to learningโ problems, school dropout, limiting their opportunities in adult life.” By prioritizing early childhoodโ nutrition and โdevelopment, the “Crecer Sano” project aims toโ build a healthier, more educated, and ultimately, more productive future โขfor guatemala.
