Marquez Needs Third Manufacturer title to Cement GOAT Status, Says Lorenzo
Ducati Team – MotoGP legend Jorge Lorenzo asserts that Marc Marquez will definitively secure his place as the greatest of all time (GOAT) if he wins a world championship with a third different manufacturer. The statement comes as Marquez continues his tenure with Ducati, with speculation surrounding a potential return to Honda.
Currently, Marquez and Valentino Rossi are the most frequently debated contenders for the GOAT title, both holding nine world championships – seven in the premier class. Giacomo Agostini leads all riders with 15 world titles. both Marquez and Rossi have achieved their championships with two manufacturers; Marquez with Honda (six titles) and Ducati (one title in 2025),and Rossi with Honda (three titles) and Yamaha (four titles).
“Well, there is no doubt that this is an achievement that further secures his position as at least the top three racer in history, if not the best,” Lorenzo told AS. “There will always be people who remind you that Agostini has 15 world titles, and Marquez will probably never surpass or match him. However, in terms of talent and speed, if we only consider those things - talent and speed - for me, he is the strongest, fastest rider in history.”
Lorenzo believes a championship with KTM, Aprilia, or Yamaha would remove any remaining doubt. “I’ll just say that; with this title,he becomes champion with two manufacturers. But if he wins with a third manufacturer, there will be no more doubts. Those who question whether he is the best in history will have no reason to deny it,” he stated.
Marquez is currently contracted with Ducati through 2026, though discussions regarding a long-term extension are ongoing. Together, rumors persist linking the Spanish rider with a possible return to honda.
