Canada Reinforces Energy Support for Ukraine at G7 Meeting
Toronto, Ontario – October 31, 2024 – Canada today reaffirmed its strong commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s energy security amidst ongoing Russian attacks on critical infrastructure.The commitment was made during a meeting between Canada’s Minister of energy adn Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, and Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, Svitlana Grynchuk, held at the G7 Energy and Environment Ministers’ Meeting in Toronto.
Minister Grynchuk expressed gratitude for Canada’s continued support as the two ministers discussed the urgent need to address Ukraine’s energy requirements, particularly with winter approaching. She emphasized the critical need for equipment and natural gas supplies to repair damage to vital gas infrastructure.
Minister Hodgson highlighted Canada’s existing financial assistance through initiatives like the Ukraine Energy Support Fund and contributions to broader multilateral efforts. He also pointed to the upcoming Rebuild Ukraine Conference and Trade Show in Warsaw (November 13-14) where a delegation of Canadian companies will participate.
Both ministers stressed the crucial role of the G7 in bridging Ukraine’s energy infrastructure gaps and maintaining its energy security as a global priority, referencing the recent G7 statement on the matter.
Looking ahead,Canada and Ukraine agreed to continued collaboration through both direct bilateral discussions and within international forums,including the G7+ Ukraine Energy Coordination Group,which Canada co-chairs with the European Union in 2025.
The meeting culminated in the signing of a Joint Declaration of Intent on Strategic Cooperation in the Energy Sector, paving the way for future collaboration. Moreover, Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand joined Minister Hodgson in announcing an additional $10 million in urgent funding for Ukraine’s energy sector, delivered through the ukraine Energy Support Fund.
